It's easy to tell that Larian didn't have this universe fully thought out upon it's creation, but the effort, detail, story telling, and design are phenomenal, one of my favorites. Great video! I remember reading all this lore in DOS2 with no idea there was actual games to some of these events

You could make a drinking game about how many times Larian retcons their own canon. Ngl it's kind of frustrating how often they do it, because it prevents me from truly sinking my teeth into the lore.

I personally really hate how awful Larian made Lucian, he’s just a monster trying to poorly justify himself constantly, and one who apparently gets exactly what he wants and gets away with it scot free if the purge ending is indeed canon (which I really hope it’s not, it’s really narrative breaking for me and nullifies the whole of DOS2’s story). Why the origin characters would agree to Lucian’s plan is beyond me, and are all even shown trying to reject his offer if you aren’t playing as them. Edit: Especially Ifan, if you go with Lucian’s plan he vows to spend his days trying to fight *against* Lucian xD

He was continuously deceived by the gods, who literally made the mortal races as living source collectors to be consumed by them on death. His plan to repair the veil and cut the gods off while also removing source from the world was the best one for the people living in it. The opinions of your companions does not have the full context of experience and if you really look into those characters, none of them are particularly people who should be judging anyone or making world changing choices. Except Fane, who is clearly the right choice to take on divinity, seal the God-King away, and return the Eternals. That should be cannon. The world was theirs, and it was the "original sin" put right.

The "canon" now is that Lucian agreed that Ifan ben-Mezd would evacuate the elves so that deathfog could slow the advance of the Black Ring (they're not willing for Lucian to be *that* evil). Alexandar secretly modified the portal scroll so that it would deploy deathfog and kill off the elves. Alexandar apparently believed non-humans were a threat to the Divine Order. Again, the story of Divinity 2 (the action game) has even bigger issues if it turns out Lucian was a fantasy setting you-know-what. This explains a few things: 1. Why Lucian went from being an idealistic good guy to an "end justifies the means" type (given how both Damian and Lucian's biological son Alexandar didn't turn out so great). 2. Why there are almost no elves in Rivellon in 1300 AD in the Divinity 2 action game since their population didn't recover over 60-70 years. Since Alexandar dies no matter what in DOS 2 and Lucian had ordered Dallis to kill him, it's supposed to be clear that everyone sort of hates Alexandar and wants him dead, including Lucian. So Alexandar faced justice for mass murdering the elves. We know that Alexandar and the Magisters are fantasy setting you-know-whats but we don't know to what extent Lucian and "Dallis" secretly micromanaged Alexandar's actions for the greater good, which sort of introduces additional problems into the story. 3. Why nobody knows who Alexandar is in 1300 AD even though the lore about Alexandar leading the Divine Order is still true. Lucian sealed the Veil with the help of the Godwoken and then averted a war with the lizards and paid restitution to all surviving elves. Lucian presented the Godwoken and companions as the "Heroes of Rivellon" who resurrected Lucian and destroyed Source. Lucian and the Godwoken rewrote history books to remove all references to Alexandar or beneficial uses of Source.

Where was this canon about Lucian not knowing about the death fog being deployed and it being Alexander’s idea? Most recent lore I’ve read on the game is the graphic novel, and Lucian both in that, and the end of DOS2 seem to well know what they were doing with the death fog, Hannag makes that clear when talking to her about the death fog weapon she made for him.

@@insaneyoohoo Lucian decided to use the deathfog because he was pressured by his advisors and ambassadors from the House of War. Lucian decided to use Deathfog on the Black Ring so that other civilizations would not be threatened as elves were at that moment. Lucian literally says that he knows there will be unavoidable casualties (since its war) but says to Ifan (with Alexandar not looking happy) that he would not use the Deathfog if he saw another way of dealing with the situation (he believed there was another way but did not see any). This is on the first few pages of the Godwoken book, not to mention that this was discussed on Larians discord.

tbh there's no lizard, dwarf nor elves in Divinity Ego Draconis. Could be that the setting is in a human city since the extent of explorable space in that game is very limited but I doubt it. Which is weird because Divine Divinity had all of the other races. To be honest it's safe to assume that the events in that game never occurred since some of the things in it have even been retconned. The term void and voidwoken do not exist in that game either

There is just 1 Divine plot hole in this. The Vail got weakened because Tir Ciredilus (100% sure i spelled that wrong) had less Worshippers because of the Deathfog used on the Elves. However thing is before that there were already 2 gods that should have been weakened enough for the Vail to be weakened. Orks pretty much got completely eradicated because of the war in Original Sin 1. Kobolds also got abused and killed for fun trough like the entire series. So it seems odd that the Vail got weakened because the Elven god was weak now and the other two are like completely irrelevant in that regard. On top of that the Void Dragon also sneaked trough the Vail already so there should have been a hole the God King can enter trough.

Great content! According with the canonic ending of DOS2 Lucian from that game is no more the Divine, he has no divine powers, maybe that could be the reason he has been "easily" captured by Damian in Divinity 2...maybe Fallen Heroes, whenever it will be released, will give an answer to that

I'm a little confused about the 2 events happening in 1233 AD: Damian being banished to Nemesis and the whole death fog over elves war. Lore book from DOS2 tells that Damian and Lucian fought this death fog WAR against each other, so Damian must have been banned after the war, since he just left Nemesis around 1238 AD. I just think it's wierd the banishing happening after the war when both of them were presumed dead. But maybe no one witnessed this temple and banishing thing, after the war. What do you think?
@MortismalGaming
@MortismalGaming 3 жыл бұрын
Lucian used the deathfog to kill the black ring and the elves were just caught in the crossfire. Lucian banishing Damian happened soon after that and effectively ended the war with most of the black ring dead and their leader missing. It's implied everyone thought the deathfog killed Damian as well which was in 1233 and then Damian spent 5 years in Nemesis, escaping in 1238

More of a casualty of war than anything, Lucian was using the deathfog on the Black Ring and nearly wiped them out, but also actually killed untold amounts of elves in the process. His view on acceptable losses to everyone but himself is what paints him as a villain. (He kills all those people in that fight but still only banishes Damian rather than kill his own son)

I only played DOS2 but I always got the feeling that Lucian is just a big maniacal asshole with no regards to lives. I allways kill him for this reason. The whole world went to shit because of him and I'm pretty sure he's lying about "restoring the source" and most likely just wants to be stronger than the previous gods by taking all the source for him. I'll cal it now that he's probably gonna be the actual villain if there will be a sequel to DOS2. Maybe linking with the fact that he will be stripped of power and Damian imprisoning him.
@HookahOtaku
@HookahOtaku 2 жыл бұрын
Well, there is Divinity 2. Lucian does not lie to you in DOS2. He did purge the world of the source and restored the barrier. You can roleplay and believe hes what you want him to be, but the canon is already established. Remember, DOS2 is a prequel to Divinity 2.

Great video :D Tho yet again it makes me like Lucian less, I mean fuck the dude messing things up is basically what leads to all the stories and games bar the first one, he should probably take the hint and just not touch anything ever again :D Its hard to say who does more harm, him in his bambling attempts to do "good" or Damien who is actually posessed by evil. I gotta say, I wish Larian put their house in order when it comes to the lore, they have already got several games in this universe and the last two were very successful, after BG3 they will eventually come back to Rivellon for sure, it could be very useful for them to pile all the lore up and shore up the flaws, maybe write up a encyclopedia like book as other series have done, the lore is interesting but it feels like its barely important to the future of the series and sometimes barely coherent and connected too. Like, I understand and agree much more with Dallis and her motivations behind her actions than Lucians.
