3:58 Main themes are typically played during the intro of a game / its main menu, or in final moments / the ending credits. For this theme though, it actually plays on the main menu, with only a vista for visuals like you mentioned later. It works wonderfully for hyping you up for the game that you're about to dig into - Plus the leitmotifs in this song reoccur very frequently throughout the game in all different tones I'm so glad that Baldur's Gate 3 has led so many people to the developer's previous Divinity games, it's always great seeing them get more recognition. The music especially is just as great as in Baldur's Gate. You can definitely hear the composer's style through both games, but the differences in his approach to both contrast nicely too

I would highly recommend the soundtracks from earlier entries in the Divinity series as well. They were composed by Kirill Pokrovsky, who started out playing keyboards for some of the first Russian metal bands, Aria and Master, in the 80s. Sadly, he passed away in 2015 with his last work being on the first Divinity: Original Sin, after which Borislav Slavov took over.

The theme is lovely, but the track Rivellon literally stopped me playing to just sit back and listen to it, then go to find the OST and play it a couple more times before going back to the game. One thing I loved about the game, was when you created your character you pick an instrument, either a flute, tambour, oud or cello, and then as you played the game, the soundtrack accented that instrument throughout.

Thematically the Divinity series asks you this kind of question, what if the gods you prayed for were dying and, you are awakening new powers that one day would replace them. What would you do if you possessed the power of gods? What are you willing to sacrifice to achieve that power. When mortals whisper their prayers to the god, how would you answer their cries?

I was playing this soundtrack at work and a coworker who was obsessed with BG3 at the time almost instantly recognised that it was the same composer, despite never playing Divinity 2. So yea, I'd say the OST has some similarities. Maybe it's the musical instruments and the whimsical nature of the tracks.

I call music like this fantasy pop, or "Notice me I'm epic". Just strumming of a guitar and boring "epic instrument and harmony" on top, no real melody. Like the composer fell in love with the sample not the melody. Try play this music back with midi sounding instruments. See how it'll hold up. For this reason I think it's a good practice to create your music with bad samples then arrange it. Then you can't hide.
@mintmaddie396310 ай бұрын
I'm sorry but nothing you said is true, the melody is very much present as a leimotiv between a lot of the song, a'so the instruments used are not only a guitare but a good balance of brass, choir and string instruments, some theme are not epic but contemplative or sad like the lament... There is plenty of adjacent textures to the melody if you listen well...
@DanIel-fl1vc10 ай бұрын
@@mintmaddie3963 It sounds like stock fantasy music to me, something they threw together in half an hour. There's no call and response, interesting syncopation or polyrhythm, just the guitar and an "epic" progression on top. Fairly easy to make yourself. Just put a riff or drum loop at the bottom and play i - VII - VI -V on a loop on top and you'll end up with something similar if you use the "big epic sound" samples. If you use midi instruments it would become apparent how cheap it is. People who don't know better think it's amazing because it's buried in choirs. Syncopation, twists and turns as well as appropriate minimalism is what makes something really good. This is just cheap, pretentious and lame. But to be fair, same is true of a lot of music. There's only a handful of game and movie composers that polish their stuff thoroughly. I think using midi sounding instruments makes it impossible to get wowed by the samples. Something like SoundCanvas, great vst for a cheap sound that forces you to pay attention.

@@JS-vj1il Could it be because all "music" on my channel is a tutorial of the basics. Call and response, scale degrees and tension/relief. Changing key, polyrhythm and syncopation. How you can notice if something is good or not from a single melody line, therefore don't rush to arrange it, spend 75% of the time on single melody line. There's no music on there, everything in those tutorials were made in 5 minutes.
