Buffy Saint Marie is a Native American singer, who was a huge part of the folk music culture. I read that she was blocked by president Johnson for songs speaking out about mistreatment of Native Americans in the 1960’s, I believe. I saw her in an interview and she said she was not aware and thought she just wasn’t as popular as she was previously. I was very sad when we no longer heard from her. I was a singer in a folk group when I was young and I missed her so very much. I think it was Elvis Presley who said, “ Until it’s Time for You to Go” was his favorite song by Buffy Sainte Marie. A prime example and text book example of knowing who your target audience is and staying away from politics in show business. When you cross that political line you alienate a portion of your audience and for the Dixie Chicks a huge portion of their fans were offended. Ronnie-Lynn Dolan Basically the lead singer Natalie Maines voiced her opinion on the president at the time while they were performing in England and many people in the country music industry and fans alike turned their backs on them and blacklisted them...burned cds, harassed, sent death threats so after they released their album “Taking the Long Way Around” they stepped away from music to focus on their families. If you listen to their song “Not Ready to Make Nice” from that album it’s basically their response to the controversy

Wanna know who history has redeemed probably more than anyone? The Dixie Chicks/The Chicks. The Iraq war was a colossal mistake by pretty much every reasonable measure. They knew this way before anyone else and weren’t afraid to say it. It may have cost them in the short run but in my opinion history has more than redeemed them. I’m gonna try to go to one of their shows the next time they tour. They had a show in my town last year but I was stuck at work. Would love to see them in person.
