My wife says I’m the only guy on the planet who spends so much time in the basement working on bikes, cleaning his workshop (not to mention the $$ spent) or riding the Kickr. I send her bike sauce dude videos. That learns her. But good. I did the same kind of hook arrangement for storage near my basement workshop. Except I just alternate hanging the bikes from the front wheel (handlebars up) or rear wheels (handlebars down). This works well. But I do have to lift the bike. Which violates bike sauce dude’s no lifting requirement. He has me beat there. Nice.

Excellent solution! You can also mount the hooks in scraps of 2x4, then screw them to the studs, moving the tires off the wall.

Some nice little tips. Great video. One issue you probably just haven't run into is that proper fenders/mudguards will be an issue. Not on the front wheel as you mentioned, but on the back wheel. That's because they prevent bikes from rolling while being vertical and will instead scratch up or bend. Ran into that myself after I built a nice storage rack for vertical storage.

Love this system. I've been using a similar system with staggered hooks for 40 years. FYI: There are a lot of different size and shaped storage hooks that can be purchased and can fit plus, deep x-section, and fat bikes.

Great ideas using two hooks for each front wheel and the ramp! In the past (in our previous house) I hung bikes from the ceiling using hooks. Currently using floor stands, but they take up a good amount of space. Side note - Your work space is much tidier than mine. 🙂

Excellent solution. That platform is so practical. Those hooks won't work for massive EBikes, but there are much sturdier hooks available. I would put two rows of 2 x 4 s to handle the hooks. Two rows to account for the staggering of multiple bikes.

Great NO LIFT bike solution! I joined 3 pieces of wood 2x6 with pocket holes and screwed it to the wall studs. It looks great and allowed me to customize the hight of 3 bikes. Thanks for the inspiration 😊

Thanks for the video and the idea! I used hooks in this configuration as a no-lift storage solution for my very heavy ebike. I have cement block walls so I installed a treated 2x4 vertically on the wall with Tapcons, then was able to play around with the hook spacing without punching additional holes in the actual wall.

For fat tire bikes, I have used hooks designed for holding ladders and other larger materials. The specific model that I used hangs over a rafter. (I have exposed rafters in my older garage)

Good organized solution 👍 I've hung bikes off hooks as well, and alternated front wheel/rear wheel hanging for each bike to help with handlebar contact. Bit easier with road bikes though since they're lighter and easier to move around

Bike hooks are a great storage solution. Hanging from the rear wheel with the front a bit off the floor minimizes wheel flop even using just one hook, and as pointed out by others, alternating head to toe (handlebars up/handlebars down) allows you to hang all bikes at the same height. I have three bikes hanging over a workbench by one hook each :)

Great idea! Pretty-much exactly what I was envisioning for myself (I especially like the "offset center bike" idea!). No concerns on theft? I didn't see any extra bolt/eyelettes for securing a lock or chain through all the frames to lock them to the wall or concrete floor...

I have similar J hooks in the ceiling and I hang my bikes from either 1 wheel or 2 wheels. Definitely recommend using a stud finder.

Neet idea but one word of caution. I used to store a mountain bike vertically but if left for a long time the brakes got soft. I think it was because the angle of the lever when upright meant any air in the fluid reservoir would migrate into the cable (shimano xt m8000 brakes) Since storing the bike on its tyres again ive not had the issue.

Thanks. I opted for hanging mine by the wheels above the car hood (9 foot ceiling). Very easy to lift (20 pounds) and hang it is uses essentially unusable space. I can bring 1 down from each side. My other bikes hang on the wall sideways by the frame because it only uses 20" of depth. And my car bike rack hangs on the wall below the road bikes because it doesn't live on the car.

The ramp is a good idea, I'll need to try that! I've got a 2.2m x 1.5m garden shed with 4 wall hooks in it. I can tetris in 10 bikes! 4 vertical, 6 squeezed in on their wheels.

Great idea. I need to organize my basement space and need to hang 4 bikes with using a minimum of floor space. And I have a blank wall handy to set it up. I have been reading articles from the reneherse website recently and saw that your school is involved in some research studies for them. Having input from outside of the big marketing machine is important. Looking forward to reading the future results.

I've been using the common hooks for a couple decades. The plastic lining is now breaking off and my rims are now at risk of getting scratched. Thus, it's time for new hooks. This time around, I will be getting bike specific hooks which cost a little more, but should fit the rims better.

I added some duct tape on the hooks when the rubber/plastic coating started to wear out. Works fine, no need to replace the hooks.

I might make a small wood contraption to attach to the wall between wall/hook. with the idea to get slightly angled so they dont stick out quite as far from the wall, ive also got 2 cars that need to fit!!

I installed my vertical hooks so that the bike is suspended off the floor by about an inch. This keeps the tension at the hook and prevents wheel flop. I’m not concerned about the full bike weight it places on the rim because honestly when you ride a bike you’re placing way more stress on the rim with your body weight.

I love this hack. In fact, I just used it and created the hanging bike rack as you’ve described in this video. But looking at it, I have an honest question: the entire bike is supported by the back tire. Is this bad for the tire? Is there a way to raise the bike up off the floor? Just wondering. It looks like the hooks are bent in, towards eachother. Did you install them at an angle or did you install them straight then bend them (without breaking them or ripping them out of the stud). Loved your stud finder moment btw 👍

sealant, no. hydro fluid - some will say yes, but I haven't had any issues, and all 3 bikes have different model hydros

Just drill a hook to the wall a bit higher avoiding bikes rear wheel to touch the floor - it will keep it straight with no wheel flap ;)
