I love this. Ugh, i just dropped $400 on steady racks the other day. I'd love this option as it seems more flexible but in my garage, it's such a high ceiling I'd have to figure out a way to bring an overhanging shelf out with enough support to hold the bikes. Hmm...got me thinking though... What were those peg boards? Where were they from? I need me some of them to hang helmets!
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 4 жыл бұрын
I dropped a shelf from the ceiling too. Works great for gear bags. I have a metal storage box shelf i got at Home Depot in the garage It’s rated for 600lbs. The rail could tie into that shelf too. 300lbs of bike and 300lbs of gear.

I can't believe somebody else did this. I was raking the internet looking for good bike rack solutions when I came up with a rack made from barn door hardware that is almost exactly like this. What a great concept and demonstration. I was able to order the rails and dual roller sets at Lowe’s for $40 each. So for about $145, I have a great rack for four bikes. I bought the bike hooks at Lowe’s also ($5), mated the hook to the roller with a 12 mm nut, 2 for $1.25 at Lowes as well. It worked perfect, threaded on securely. The 12 mm nut fit into the recessed slot of the rollers so lock in place at one of eight positions. You can adjust the position of the hook by pushing the hook up and rotating until the nut drops back into slot.

This has been my biggest challenge building the rack; marrying the wood screws to a machine threaded bolt. I can't get anything to bite on the screw; at least, something that will also set into the roller like you did. I think my problem is made worse by the fact that I'm trying to use the thicker Blue Hawk bike hooks - that are thicker than the hooks that Alex linked to in the video. This is good input though, I might make _another_ trip to Lowe's to see if I can find something. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, have to add- Park Tools makes machine threaded hooks in both sizes, better than mickey-mousing the wood screws. I have an 11' ceiling in my garage, mounted it with shelf brackets with 1/2" plywood shelf to the wall suds to get proper height. Top shelf holds truck pad, fenders, pads, helmets, etc. Did not win FAMILYHANDYMAN prize, but did get picture and basic assembly instructions into the magazine issue. Don't forget the thru bolts at each end to stop the rollers running out of either end, dropping bike on ground.

This is superb, thanks for sharing. Between four teenage boys, wife and myself, we have MANY bikes out in the garage. I’ve tried a ton of storage solutions and until now found the best to be a simple 2x board run between two vertical posts slightly above saddle height. Then you just lift the bike a few inches and rest the horn of the saddle on top of the board. Simple, cheap, tidy and effective; however with a bunch of bikes, they do get crowded together. I am going to take the same span in my garage and run a hanging-sliding rack as in this video, should work great.

Just did this with two 8’ sections for 6 bikes. I have the bikes running parallel to the wall with handlebars overlapping the next bike’s wheels because I have a fairly narrow space in my one car garage between the wall and car. One thing you should update, if you haven’t already is that Park (model 450) makes the same hooks with a black coating and machine bolt ends with two nuts included instead of the wood screw versions you spec’ed. Otherwise great solution!

put up a variation of this in my garage this summer. i have a high ceiling in there so used some shelf brackets with a high weight limit to mount to the wall and also put a 24" deep shelf board on top. drilled holes in the top of my box rail to line up with the holes in the ends of the shelf brackets and bolted through the rail, bracket, and shelf to hold it together. drilled holes through the back of the box rail at both ends and put in plastic spacers i didn't need from tv mounts to keep the trolleys from coming out in a way i can't see from the front. cut it down to 6½ feet since that's the space i have and put 6 hooks in it. used park tool machine-threaded hooks that come with 2 screws -- the small size ones work great with a nut actually inside the trolley but the plus size i needed for my 27.5+ just barely has room to slide through where the rail bolts to the shelf and brackets. don't have any fat bikes so didn't get any of the largest hooks. got my box rail from home depot and the back track actually sits lower than the front track, so i need to push the wheel a bike is hanging by toward the wall a little to let the trolley slide side to side, meaning they sort of lock themselves in place when hanging free.

Incredible idea, and thanks for the instructions. I helped a friend build this in her storage shed. We could not find nuts that worked on the various hooks she had so we used the actual bolts that the barn door brackets would hang from and attached the hooks to those with wire rope clips. One question - do your hooks spin freely, or are they rotationally static? The way we've done it the hooks do turn freely and it seems a bit more of a challenge to get the bike on it as it will turn if you hit it at all with the wheel. Maybe this is something you'd get used to. It also seems that having them static but at a bit of an angle would allow for even tighter spacing of bikes as the cranks and bars would nest a bit more. Thanks again.
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 3 жыл бұрын
Nice. Yeah they are static. If they rotate i think it does get to be too challenging to get a bike on. Even with the hook static at 90 degrees you can still angle the bikes.

I like this system. I have either given away bikes or sold them cheap because I only had room for one bike in the garage. I have an outside shed for the rest but hate putting good bikes out there so I was storing one additional in my bedroom closet. I'll need to measure this off because currently my best bike is hanging above my Jeep in the garage so might not fit, but still like the idea.

Nice idea, perfect to save space, yet avoid the PITA of trying to get closely spaced bikes out. Will definitely have to see if I can get any of those parts locally so I can do my version. Just found this channel and enjoy the informative and to the point videos, with as another commenter said, no stretching it out for longer views.

Loved this, thanks so much!! Moving finally to our brand new home and I get to design the garage interior!! We have 8 bikes in total, mostly trail bikes with one gravel. How wide shall I go to keep it smooth and neath without taking too much space?

Awesome idea, love it! I'm using static hooks on 24" ctr joists. This would increase capacity. 😎 I didn't hear it on the vid, or anyone mention that the bikes are alternating front/rear tire up. This allows more bikes as seats & rear tires can nest together. Brilliant! Familiar w/ barn door track, as I used them to DIY bifold garage doors & keep my overhead clear for storage.

You can also alternate hook heights to get bar clearance, or road/MTB bikes. The road bikes aren't mine obviously.

I've wanted to try hooks like this to hang my bikes but I'm always worried that the rims will get scratched or even worse, dented. Has that ever happened to you or anyone else that's used hooks like this? Thanks for this video....this is a great idea!

This is like the idea I had for an adaptive heat lamp system in kitchens so you can make service go both directions when there are two door entries and two sides of a restaurant that has different customer levels at different times of day (especially if there are big bookings on one side) It was two of these rails and a heat lamp island that moves or locks in place. That way you aren't using a fixed system and as long as you make equipment have wheels / brakes and modular with plenty of power outlets etc, you can quickly moves things around based on the use of the space

The challenges for this idea are gas lines and water lines which need special hose setups

Perfect! I have a space in my deep garage where I could build a setup just like this with a deep shelf similar to what you have. My shelf clearance would be around 79" instead of the 83" you prescribe but I think this will be ok as I don't have downhill bikes and most of my collection is shorter road, gravel and mountain bikes? Maybe I could get it up to 81" clearance by notching the wood studs so the rail becomes recessed. Can't really raise the shelf much as it would become less than 12" and kind of impractical for holding much. Also what’s a good distance from the wall to position the rail? Maybe16 inches would be fine as to avoid the tires bumping up and leaving marks on the wall? In my situation I can fit just one 8ft section of rail, what’s the max number of bikes you could store? I think I can fit up to 8 bikes if I alternate the bikes hanging from front and rear tires so the handlebars aren’t conflicting with each other too much.

This is a really clean, clever, functional idea. Well done. I'm in the same boat trying to tighten up my storage game, but I've never come around to the idea of hanging my bikes from hooks (or even cradles, like Steady Rack). There's something about imparting load (albeit no more than 30 lb) through the headset via hooks that never sits well with me. I realize we smash these bikes around on trail, but the load paths is different and not as prolonged as it is when the bike just hangs... Never rubbed you wrong? I love the idea of floor racks; easy in/out and no lifting... I'm contemplating a sliding floor rack system, but your solution is undeniably efficient! Thanks for all the fun content! See ya out there!

marTo rocks Thanks! When have room i like storing my bikes flat for sure. It’s just a lot easier too. Most springs I automatically expect to change some fork seals. This last year with the bikes hanging inside i haven’t even had to do that. The cold seems to be harder than the hanging. I’ve never had any issues and usually break my bikes crashing them. My personal feeling is that these bikes are never gonna suffer from 30lbs of force. I’d probably be most concerned about carbon rims but no issue ever. Have you seen the Santa Cruz crew try to break a carbon frame? The force on the bike is similar to a flat landing but with about 1/15 of the energy. Figuring I’m 170 the bike is 30 and 2.5 to 3gs of force. Anyway, as they say, your mileage may vary. Stoked you’re liking the content and don’t be shy about sharing ideas for shows you’d like to see too.

@@JoyOfBike thanks for the reply... I've got some sketches but it may be a ways off for reality! They all include integrating my current floor racks, mostly Feedback Sports... I will say you've got me thinking about the hanging idea. Kinda reminds me of a butcher shop meat locker!... Also I've got a few ideas for content/topics. I can post here or DM you.
