DIY: 2012+ ML / GLE (W166) Detailed Front Brake Pads Replacement

This is a super detailed DIY instruction of how to change the front brake pads on a Mercedes Benz chassis W166.
Torque Spec: slider pin: 40ft-lb (55Nm), wheel bolts: 110ft-lb.
The chassis W166 includes: ML350, ML400, ML550, GLE350, GLE400, GLE550.

Good video with 3 points to mention: 1) slider pins - never use lube at all / cleaning is fine 2) pushing back the pistons simply use the old brake pad with your tool centerline 3) after installing left side simply push brake a few times to get first break aligned, then do other side - hence no need to touch brake fluid at all ..

One tip for compressing the pistons is to put back the old brake pad and push them in simultaneously instead of doing them one by one

To retract the pad locking system instead of using a crow bar u can go into the car system option and choose retract

Depends on if your GLE has the AMG Sport Package (AMG wheels, larger ventilated front rotors)

One piston will not come out as you compress the other one because you aren't pushing on the brake pedal to force out the pistons. Also, you should use an old pad on top of the pistons while you use your your tool or c-clamp to push the piston back in, instead of your tool's face turning and grinding on the pistons.

You only need that for the rear brakes.

Replacing only the pads on cross drilled rotors is not recommended. You are going to have premature wear also uneven contact. It is ok only on non cross drilled one.

That’s such bs. Not even Mercedes’ technical manual recommend changing the brake pads AND rotors at the same time unless there is enough wear, cracks along the drilled holes (it specifies a depth and length of cracks that would be of concern), or other visible defects like warping. The unevenness of the wear will only be temporary.
