Really smart cutting the dados all at once then cutting the plywood. Adding storage for drills, batteries, clamps and others might be a great idea. That way you gave the hardware, tools and clamps within reach during the assembly process.

Instead of the 3D-printed bracket, you could use some 1" wide trim on the horizontal slats (presuming the slats are 3/4" ply), leaving a 1/4" lip on the front of the slats to hold the box in. I think it would look a bit more finished than the mix of plastic and wood.

Hey Bob, great video! Just a head's up for anybody serious about building one of these. This Leap Day weekend (Feb 2020) Harbor Freight is running a 30% off for any item under $10 (limit 5 /day with online coupon, but the one they handed me at checkout last weekend was for 9/day). Regular price for the 20 bin medium storage case like you used in this video is $8.69 so the coupon brings it down to $6.08. That's a great deal but it ends tomorrow (3/1/20)

Nice Video! I read through the comments and there are two suggestions that I feel are really worthy enough to speak on. The one thing I did notice from my own experiences is sagging and how to keep the storage cases in place. So as you more than likely have done to remedy the sag would be to utilize a full shelf instead of the the two short rails. Also to help when pulling out one of the cases to ass whats in it and keeping things stable would be to have the self be proud of the cabinet about an inch to an inch and a quarter so it has something to rest on. As of the 3D angle stop I see two things I would suggest. A lot of us don't have access to a 3D printer or have a real practical justification to buy one. I know I don't have that luxury. Although it was very cleaver idea, one of the comments was to leave a 1/4 inch lip. I look forward to seeing your other projects and thanks for posting

I didn't use a full shelf because it would have required a lot more wood to complete. I haven't had any sagging issues with any of the storage bins. Of course I don't have tons of weight in them either. Thanks for your input.

Very smart carcass with the rabbets and dados. I plan to make the same carcass but with a 1/2" ply backer. For the 'shelves' I'm considering 1/4" x 1.5" lattice moulding as cleats instead of dado'd 3/4" 'semi-shelves.' Less wood, fewer cuts, plenty of sheer strength.

Just finished going through my dad's garage which consisted of a wall of coffee cans, assorted jars and boxes of screws, nuts, bolts and fasteners of every sort known to man! 30+ HF storage bins later, I've been checking out the various cabinets being made for them on you tube. I really like yours but as another writer expressed, I'm concerned about sag without more horizontal support. He posted his question about 5 months ago and you indicated there was no problem with sag at that point. How are the boxes holding up now? Several of these boxes are super heavy and I'm just wanting to be certain I shouldn't just bite the bullet and go with the shelves. Thanks a lot! Great build!

None of mine have shown any signs of sagging. You could replace the holders on the sides with a full shelf. I didn't do that because it would have required a lot more wood to do the project.

my dad had a wooden spindle ( made from two 2x4s if memory serves ) nailed to each spindle face was a row of jar lids he would spin the assembly to find what he needed in its jar -- then unscrew the jar, replacing it when done

I bought 2 hdx organizers for 12 dollars. I was going to go get more but I found out about those harbour freight ones which I like more because of the portable compartments. The hdx one is arrangeable to hold different sized things but you can't bring one compartment with you, there's just dividers.

Why did you leave the lids on? It adds three steps to retrieve a part (2 catches and a lid) and another 3 to put the tray away. Six movements extra. They also take height. And they serve no purpose. Would you have a drawer with a lid?

He replaced a metal washer with a plastic piece that took many hours to design and build. How is that keeping it simple?
@TheJttv
@TheJttv 8 жыл бұрын
"hours to design" by that you mean all of 3 minutes in any CAD software and a washer would get caught on the boxes more and scratch them up. Sure 3D printing takes time but he has patience. get off your high chair chap.

Jttv, Clearly my suggesting that you were wrong about his solution being simple upset you. Please accept my apology. Here is a link to a helpful product. amzn.com/B01AE6AUBI - I only wish it came with a hug. At the risk of upsetting you further I must say that your use of the term "high chair" makes no sense in this context. It means you think I am having a drink at a bar or some such nonsense. Using words out of context like this makes you look foolish. I think the term you were looking for is "high horse" meaning snobbish. So I think you're sentence should have read "get off your high horse you bung sniffer". If you're going to insult me please try to get it right.

I bought a version of those cases too, but I don't like them too much. It's annoying to pull them out, open them, then you need a space to put them down and take it out. You definitely can't do it one handed :D

Great Job!! Have any of your HF trays sagged in the middle supporting the trays this way? I have been thinking of making this set-up for over a year now but was concerned as I have quite a few trays full of screws and they seem to be pretty heavy. I figured I would have to make a complete shelf for them to set on. Again this looks very nice!!

So you have 400 storage compartments....in a huge rack...taking up a large area...when you could have bought 4 sortimo boxes doubled up for the same number of boxes..at a fraction of the space taken up...to save a few bucks ? And the sortimo quality would be 10x better
