When one of my Stihl brush cutters needed a new carb 10 years ago, I was put off by the fact that Stihl wanted $100 for a new one. So I looked on Amazon and bought some knockoffs. Five of them. For SIX DOLLARS apiece, less than the sales tax in my state on a Stihl carb, and a third the price of those rebuild kits that rarely work. The first one is still on the machine, which is in heavy use on a 20-acre property. That company either builds carbs for Stihl or should be. I haven’t always had that much luck with knockoffs, but that $6 carb was a home run.

Bought a new weedwhacker because the carb on my old one was shot. I hated it- the head spun the opposite direction of the old one I was used to and it was really irking me trying to trim with it. I haven't had much luck on those knockoff carbs either but for $12... why not? Old weedwhacker fired right up on the new carb and I'm still using it weekly 2 years later. Anybody want to buy a backward-spinning weedwhacker for cheap? Barely used!

I just replaced the carb on a Stihl 026 with a $20 one from Amazon and it runs great. The main problem with the old Stihl carb was it had no way to adjust the high speed jet. The new one does.

Great tutorial on how a second set of (pro) eyes can find the problems involving a carb replacement. It was choke part connected wrong (and auto throttle was on). Take photos with a cell phone of the before disassembly and then connect the new part on from those photos so you don't make the same error.

Hi Taryl...got a dumb question--I've got a very old Toro Single Stage Snowblower--manufactured in 2001. It came with the Plastic Briggs and Stratton carb. They were known for leaking and mine did too. I bought a metal bowl (Briggs/Walbro) and it ran ok for 3 years until it started leaking fuel our of the choke side (caused by a bad needle which I fixed, pressure tested and cleaned all jets). I figured I'd try the plastic carb again- cleaned all of its' jets, installed a new needle and it pressure tested good at 3-4 lbs. I reinstalled it and the Toro ran fine, however the next morning there was gas on the floor. The carb's bowl gasket was leaking. I took two gaskets and re-tightened the plastic bowl. No leaks but the carb started surging (it didn't with the single gasket). Would the extra bowl gasket be the cause of the surging? I ended up using a metal carb that I had re-built and it's working. Thanks for your great videos SIR!

Lots of people put 2 cycle oil in the gas tank to keep the gas from corroding or rusting the fuel system components. Any oil will work though without complication once you get it going again diluted with fresh gasoline. But it won't keep the gas from going bad. *( nether will STA-BIL, check out Taryl's episode where he tried it with 10 little engines mounted on a picnic table for a year) The main cause of that governor hunting is the fuel mixture orifices being so exact that they are too small to work effectively with anything but fresh gas with 10% or less EtOH (ethanol) going thru them. It's an emissions related issue. The richer the A/F ratio the higher the HC and CO emissions. Back in the day, small engines had "high speed" mixture screws to adjust, but the U.S. EPA has forced the small engine industry to make their carburetors non-adjustable. EtOH is less volatile and anything else but "fresh" gasoline going thru those A/F mixture orifices changes the ratio to a leaner condition than was engineered for the engine to run correctly. Some generators are extra lean to increase efficiency and they sometimes require a considerable period of time befor they are warm enough to run without the choke partially on. E.g. The Harbor Freight "Tailgator" sometimes requires attending the choke for 3 or 4 minutes befor it will run on it's own. The throttle opening and closing is called "governor hunting." When the governor opens the throttle, unlike car carburetors from the past, there is no squirt of fuel to fill the dropout of the suspended fuel caused by the sudden change in barometric pressure, (vacuum or manifold absolute pressure) difference so the torque sags. The torque sag lowers the erpm so the governor opens the throttle to compensate. That sudden opening of the throttle causes a further lean A/F condition which causes a bigger torque sag which causes the engine to further lose rpm, so the governor opens the throttle even further, which causes a further leaning and what you hear is the throttle opening and closing in an unsteady condition. Until the engine is HOT or if there is anything obstructing the fuel going thru the calibrated orifices in the carburetor, or dirt you will have to put the choke on partially to get it to run smoothly. Partial choke will immediately fix it, but changes in load on the engine will require changes to the choke position so it's not a very viable fix. The fix is dump out the fuel and put in fresh, or if there is debris in the tiny orifices, a fuel system conditioner may clean it out. Otherwise the carburetor must be cleaned to clear the blockages. I swear by Techron by Chevron as the fuel system conditioner and cleaner. I have used it for years with great success. It does not correct the gasoline, like the PRI-G product Taryl showed. Techron is only for cleaning the fuel system. BUT IT WORKS MARVELOUSLY. Some extra choking may be needed once you get the engine running, but as soon as the Techron gets into the carb it starts to clear the debris. I use about 10 X the mix the bottle calls for when I'm clearing a problem carburetor. In just a few minutes I can put the engine to work as it will clear the debris very quickly. As a last resort, you can drill out the passage to allow more fuel to pass thru the carburetor, but only about 1 or 2 thousandth's of an inch. If you have a full set of Number, Letter and Fraction drills, using a micrometer you can find the size the existing A/F orifice is and go from there. Thank you Taryl for showing us how much difference the old gas can make on fussy nowaday generator engines. I only wish you would have connected the choke linkage as soon as you saw it was not connected and then run the engine on partial choke to show the need for richer mixture. OK, FB. ben/ michigahn

Taryl, I have a generator that has had the same fuel for at least 3 years and It starts and runs fine? I think it's because I only use Ethanol-free fuel, I also run the carb dry when I do run it by shutting off the fuel supply. I am considering changing it out, maybe just use it in a 2015 vehicle I use as an everyday driver. Wadayouthink?

I have ALWAYS had good fuel storage (with non-ethanol fuel, of course) by using Sta-Bil original. As soon as I get home with the filled cans, I put the prescribed amount into each can. If I haven't used that fuel in a year, I add the prescribed amount to that year-old fuel. Never have I had a problem. I do the same with fuel stored in my equipment as well.
@billsimpson604
@billsimpson604 2 күн бұрын
They should put a warning label on those generators. 'Remove all fuel before prolonged storage.' Then put a big 'WARNING' explanation in the owner's manual how gasoline has a shelf life, and how old gasoline will not run the engine, and will eventually damage the carburetor if allowed to sit inside it for long periods of time. At least he didn't pull and pull the starting cord, like I did on my pressure washer, not realizing that I needed to put the switch on 'RUN' before it would start. I had to discover the hard way that no amount of pulling will start it with the ignition switched off!

Tyral, the fuel line piece you used as a "sleeve" so you could test with your test gas tank's 1/4" fuel line, would you leave that on if the generator fuel tank hose was also a 1/4" line?? Old carb that I'm replacing has a 1/4" inlet and new samazon carb inlet is smaller, like the one in this video. Is the "sleeve" something you would do for long term fix or not??

You took the words right out of my mouth when you said that those aftermarket carburettors are a bit " hit & miss ". When I replaced the Honda GX35 engine on my dads UMK435 brush cutter the carburettor on the new Chonda engine was bad because I couldn't adjust the aftermarket Walbro WYL (4 stroke) type of carburettor. Every time it either wouldn't start from cold or it would start then stall , that was until I adjusted the low speed mixture adjustment screw but if I ran the engine at full throttle then I released the throttle then the engine would falter then stall. It wouldn't start & run until I readjusted the low speed mixture adjustment because when I released the throttle the engine flooded with fuel. I watched the Vintage engine repairs channel & the English bloke (it's actually an Australian YT channel) said that means that the high speed mixture adjustment screw needs to be screwed in to make it run Leaner. Well that will work on a WYK (2 stroke) carburettor) but not the WYL type because the high speed mixture adjustment was preset at the factory & it couldn't be adjusted by me. I even drilled the brass plug out of the side & no , there's no mixture adjustment screw underneath it, I had to reuse the original Walbro WYL type of carburettor to get the engine to Run properly !

A friend of mine quite a few years ago got a aftermarket carb for a Honda generator and it wouldn't run so he ordered another aftermarket one put it on and it run Soooo he took it off took it apart and then took the other apart and compared . When they made the first one they forgot to drill the hole in the side of the pickup that goes down in the bowl . He drilled the hole and then it worked fine . Then only thing wrong with the original Honda carb was hidden jet was plugged up from rotting gas but he didn't know about that jet at the time .

I use and tell customers to get fuel from the our small local airport if storing or if short use of generator use and during extend use just use non ethanol and run it out when done and store with air plane fuel. This fuel seems to have years of life not like regular gas

Tyrell, always turn off the fuel to shut down anything with a karbertrator. Clean karbertrators are happy karbertrators. Ethanol sux!

It's an issue storing gas in a Generator you may or not need! There should be a way to blow it all out after a weather episode! Like a tap! Not just a shut off and run till it out.

In these smaller ope’s AM carbs they can be hit/miss. I usually end up combining with oem to run correctly, BUT for folks who think they can use AM carbs for atv/utvs/dirt/street bikes…yeah that’s a no go. I’ll tell them bring me the oem or I’ll by a used oem, rebuild and get running correctly. The chinesum just ain’t got the larger more critical carbs figured out yet.

I doubt it was bad gas because you didnt drain the float bowel which was already filled up with the old gas.

It’s a gamble on the Chinese carbs Best to have the original carbs rebuilt by a shop and a real mechanic If not buy a oem but with out cleaning tank you might destroy it also Take it to a good local shop 😊

Should have dropped the bowl to make sure there was no trash since the customer ran it on the tank without cleaning and refreshing the fuel
