DIY artillery gun made from a BMP cannon used by Russian troops

Russian troops have started improvising their own artillery guns as Putin’s army runs out of weapons in Ukraine. Video taken by the Russians shows a DIY jeep towing an 2A28 “Grom” cannon from the top of a BMP transport. But on closer inspection the gun has been modified to turn it into an artillery piece, with stabilising supports. Troops then load and fire the cannon by hand, as they would use an artillery gun in normal combat. Russian troops have been forced to get creative with their weaponry as the war in Ukraine has dragged on. They have built ‘turtle tanks’ covered in armour plating to try and protect against drones, and are using motorbikes to attack instead of armoured vehicles.
Putin has placed his economy on a war footing to churn out the weapons needed to continue the war, but still there are shortages at the front. #russia #ukraine #war

This kinda of media annoys me. No this is not an accurate representation of the current Russian military. the men you see in this clip, as with other clips of outdated or otherwise improvised weapons in Ukraine are members of the DPR, or Donetsk Peoples Republic. They are a separatist MILITIA which has sided with Russia. They are not provided with any modern gear, and are simply given the hand me downs from previous eras of Russian equipment, they must buy or create the rest of what the need for battlefield sustainment. The average Russian CONSCRIPT, is still equipped with full Ratnik gear, give or take the actual QUALITY of that gear, Putin is not getting “desperate” or running out of equipment. I am by no means a fan of Putin, nor the war in Ukraine, however blatant false media is wrong regardless.

This is clearly a training exercise of some sort probably by some sort of citizen militia. Nobody is wearing body armor or helmets. There are no fortifications, so no one is expecting any return fire. The line of orange posts is probably a measured distance on a firing range. When and where was this footage shot? If Dail Mails knows then why don't they say? The patch on the hats is the only thing that shows this is Russian. This is either genuine footage taken out of context (because we just don't know the context) or it's staged.

Warsaw pact members ordered tank spare parts, but USSR did not work like consumer society, so when you ordered wheels, they sent barrels and vice versa. People had to be creative.

The main purpose of the 2A28 gun is to combat such objects as tanks, self-propelled guns and other armored vehicles. The gun can also be used to suppress enemy manpower hidden in light field fortifications or in brick structures. The 2A28 gun is smoothbore. The barrel of the 2A28 gun is a monoblock. The barrel is screwed into the breech, in which a wedge bolt is installed. Ejectors are installed in the breech to hold the bolt in the open position and extract spent cartridges from the chamber The range of ammunition includes PG-15V shots (GRAU - 7P3 index) and OG-15V shots (GRAU - 7P5 index)[8]. PG-15V shots consist of two parts: a shaped charge grenade and a powder charge. With the help of a powder charge, the grenade is fired from the gun at a speed of 400 m/s, then the grenade engine is turned on, which accelerates it to 665 m / s. When colliding with a target, the grenade penetrates the armor with a directed cumulative jet. With a target height of 2 meters, the direct firing range of the PG-9 grenade is 765 meters, and the maximum range is 1300 meters. The OG-15V high-explosive fragmentation shot with a maximum range of 4,400 meters is used to combat enemy infantry.

Throughout history, men have captured or scavenged pieces of weaponry and repurposed them for their own needs. For situations in which all you really need is a few artillery shells on an enemy position at close range, this is actually more than adequate. It's not fancy, but it is light, portable and it even has adjustable elevation, so for anybody who has some surplus BMP ammo, this is actually not that bad. The makeshift hellcannons worked well enough in Syria, thousands of people were killed by them, so you sould never discount any artillery, no matter how crudely made it may seem.

And even with the sights present, they are made for short range combat. The utility of that thing as an artillery piece is practically none. It can only fire at small-arms range. It can be of some use (once reinstalled the sights) only to reinforce a fixed position.

@@neutronalchemist3241 The 2A28 “Grom” cannon taken from a BMP is a direct fire weapon with minimum elevation. To use it as an artillery gun is useless. To use it to reinforce a fix trench line without armor protection for the gunner against small arms fire is also useless. The time it took to setup the gun would make them "Cannon Fodder"!

@@reecom9884 Why you should move it? When I said "to reinforce a FIXED position" it was pretty clear the position was fixed. It's not that difficult to cover and camouflage a so small artillery piece. I've sen done with way bigger 105mm howitzers.

This is definitely at a range in Russia. I highly doubt this is a widespread stopgap, rather its probably mechanics putting something together from spares. It would be annoying to go through all that to get the weapon into action only to be hit by a drone, a drone that has watched you put this claptrap into action for 5 minutes
