Thanks for the technique, I just picked up a set of 15” arts for my 38 Chevrolet sedan. I was using a drill and wire wheels removing too much material in addition to the rust. I am going to use your technique, less destructive for my 1938 artillery’s and I will apply this to rear quarter window vents I have on the way too. Thanks again

I love that method. I have a couple of 1940 Ford wheels in the brew right now. I'm going 100% vinegar, it shaves off a couple of days. Years ago, I took some 36 Ford 3 window coupe doors and submersed them, came out great, inside and out.

You should use the Vinagar 100%. After you rinse you must Neutralize the Vinegar.. Put the part in the tub again with clean water and a box of baking soda and let sit for 20 min...then rinse. If you don't the Vinegar will keep eating the part even though you rinsed it off..i been doing this for 10 years now....

I'm making a cowboy cooker and have a rusty plow disk that I put in a pan of distilled vinegar. I can rub my finger across is after 4 days and the rust rubs off and I see black steel. No grinding so no grinding off metal. I will leave it soaking for another 3 days and then take it to the carwash and pressure hose it clean to get the vinegar off. This plow disc was rusty AF and I don't own a grinder so I believe I will be able to clean it off with a wire brush. I didn't think it would work but after watching this video I figured why not try a cheap home remedy. Cheapest place to buy distilled vinegar is Walmart or if you have Foods 4 Less in your area. Less than $4 a gallon or the 2 pan at Sam's Club or Costco is dirt cheap. Thank you.

Have you tried this method with Chrome Rims? Was just wondering if the vinegar would hurt the chrome .
@youandiryan5 жыл бұрын
Do not do this with chrome rims. You can and will permanently destroy the finish. It should only be done on steel rims. There will be a chemical reaction and it could make the chrome fall or flake off.
@55Rumble5 жыл бұрын

This works with all rusty iron parts. Can heat up the water, and use a fishtank-bubbler to keep the water moving to increase time. Great vid! Dont forget to wash thourogly and treat bare metal fast, tends to rust quicker after this treatment. I use baking soda water to neutralize the acid..

MR. BRICK HEAD Sure you can. I pour mine through a paint strainer, even a colander works. It’ll be dirty looking and smelly but just dump in the jug and stash away. Electrolysis though is oh so much faster and much cheaper.

That rim looks galvanized... and the rust looked like paint peeling off of it...
@brucehester35745 жыл бұрын
@Tabourba That DOES look like the paint peeling off of the steel!! Not rust. Look at the first large pieces the he peels off, they are FLEXIBLE, obviously not rust, since rust is brittle! The best way to restore rusted steel and iron (think cast iron pots, skillets, etc) is to use a 12v battery charger, a plastic tank (like 55 or 60 gallon drum half, or whatever the item fits in...), washing soda, and a iron or steel electrode... this works like plating, but is actually doing something like reverse electrolysis of the rust...
@sigmanfloyd71796 жыл бұрын
What do you spray on it afterwards to protect it cause it'll start rusting again right away correct? Thx.
@olivedrabgarage62433 жыл бұрын
The catch is cleaning afterwards...it flash rusts immediately and the rusty water stains EVERYTHING. You need to be careful with vast parts too as it’ll eat into the metal.

in my experience electrolysis or the works toilet bowl cleaner are a lot more effective, but in any of them you will need to add a flash rust inhibitor such as wd-40, or baking soda, etc, and be sure to have adequate ventilation

Why 50-50? wouldnt you want the full strength of the vinegar to eat away every single rust particle?
@topiado20734 жыл бұрын
Is that really works sir?? Please
@sterlingstreamliner7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the inspirational video. I'm currently doing same using 4 gals of Heinz vinegar and equal parts 4 gals of water. 8 gals is enough at 50/50 mix for one 15" steel wheel in 16-1/2" plastic tub. My plan is 1 week per wheel. x4 = 1 month. In response to other comments below, both vinegar and Oxalic acid will do this. Difference is Oxalic acid is a nasty chemical to pour into drain afterwards. Vinegar is more environmentally-friendly. Make sure not to leave steels items immersed for too long as the solution will eventually eat the metal completely. Suggest 1-2 weeks should be all you need. Immersion of more than 1 month could damage the metal. Soaking / rinsing in baking powder or other neutralizer is also a good idea. Cola will also react in a similar way. Vinegar seems to be best choice. I used 3 x 1.32 gal. jugs from Costco. Cost was $2.99 ea. or $9. for 3 jugs.

Waste of vinegar and water. Just vinegar, by itself would have been better in half the time. Also, that extra 3-4 inches of depth is wasted water and vinegar. Better be ready to paint as soon as it dries. That clean surface is ready for primer/paint or rust; whatever gets there first.
