Great video! I was hoping you’ll going to make a ladder from scratch. I wanted to build one because all the one from Home Depot or Lowes is too large for the opening and I can’t expand it anymore without affecting the structural integrity.

Yes, there are ways you can cut out a portion of a joist leg and build across with a double 2x4 and frame the opening to fit a purchased standard size ladder. Good luck

I wanna add a ladder to my attic access but it's in my house do they make square rather than rectangular ? Or should I just fab one ? Hi from flint !

Hey Stephen. Thx for the question. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a “square” one. However, the do come in a number of sizes. Most all are rectangular because they are designed to fit lengthwise in between the rafters. Also, the smaller u go (build your own square one) the smaller the items u can put up in the attic. Check out Home Depot’s website, there is a good variety there. Good luck.

Trying to do the same. However, the ceiling joists are 16" on center. Best way to frame out out the opening?

Great question Luke. U can cut out a joist section and do a double 2x4 frame to put a standard ladder in.

@@lukehibner8189 hey Luke, I’ve seen the double 2x4 frame before, so I know it works. I obviously don’t know your situation. If ur going to use a standard purchased ladder from like a HD and your not taking 200 pound things up into the attic, I would think the 2x4 would work. If ur doing heavy stuff, beefing it up can’t hurt.

Thx for watching. Actually, this ladder has a 300 lb rating, and u can buy them with more. But that’s all I needed, since my attic is very small in my barn.

Hey Cesar, thx for watching. I believe it is a standard size to fit in between roof trusses that are 24 on center. So roughly 22-1/2”.

What’s the ceiling height? Mine is 14 foot.

Mine was 10’ but you will need to purchase a ladder for your ceiling height.
