Another fantastic build - really impressive. Do you think a stepper motor, coupled with a magnetic fence locking mechanism would work? Or would backlash be a problem?
@bellevuesnekkeri9 жыл бұрын
Ant Mallett Thank you very much. Now that sounds interesting. A magnetic lock would be cool to see. Are you familiar with such part. any links. It would be cool to see. I think if you get a stepper at a decent size no problem, ecspecially if you lock the fence you dont need a monster as you take the force on the locking fence, i like the idea. i see no problem with backlash on steppers as long as you dont loose steps, they are just as accurate as servos.
@antmallett60659 жыл бұрын
Bellevue Woodshop I was thinking that you could inlay a mild steel strip between the T-Track and the ruler, and attach a magnetic base (the lever operated type) to the fence. And then toggle the lever with a small RC servo. The only problem is added friction, which could be alleviated by running the mag lock on bearings. One possible problem is that if the magnet is too far above the steel strip, it might slam down and move the fence slightly. So perhaps a better idea is to use the servo to lower an electromagnet, and then energise said electromagnet to lock the fence.

There is an option in Mach3 to calibrate your system. Check on which axis you have set your servo driver (X, Y, Z, A etc.). Use the calibration function under motor tuning, measure real distance travelled and correct this distance in the function. Voila, it should be dead on now within 0.05mm or better.

Hi. I am not sure of the torque on this motor. Its a salvaged one so I am not sure of the specs. I built mine as long as my miter bench would allow, aprox 2000mm. If I was to change anything It would be to make acalibration bitton on the screen. I remove my saw sometimes for to bring to other jobs outside the house,and then It would be great to easily calibrate it. An adjustable reference switch or do it on the screen. Awesome system...Just curious, assume it's a digital servo and drive since Mach 3 is only step and direction... so are you running it straight from parallel port or through another control brain?Would you have been comfortable using stepper motors instead if you didn't have the parts already?Also, see you're using linear guides, a large, thick one which is very expensive... seems way overkill, what would you recommend to do the linear motion without being linear guides and blocks?Thanks
@bellevuesnekkeri8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Claudio.Its an AC servo, and the controller is run either by step/direction from a cheap cnc controller board. This is run from a parallel port controlled by mach 3. The linear rail was salvaged from an old machine. Stepper can be used, but since it is not a closed loop system (unless you use an encoder for feedback) it can lose steps. However. If you get a powerful motor it is absolutely possible. A well built carriage built with bearings on tubular steel maybe?

Why does the display for the cut length always appear to be approximately .02 off?
@bellevuesnekkeri9 жыл бұрын
Lenny F I am not sure, but it might have to do with the speed I am running. I have it set to aprox 60 meters/min, which is to high. If I reduce the speed, it might land more accurately. Also tweaking the gain and integral i could get it spot on. But since the units are in mm, 2/100 mm off, really doesnt make any difference in woodworking. Thanks for watching and commenting Lenny
@tomd75159 жыл бұрын
Lenny F It's a chop saw. Unless you clean the blade after every cut, you'll have more than 0.02mm of pitch on the blade causing inaccuracy. ... not to mention backlash. I think it's an amazing system. Congratulations on the system, Bellevue Woodshop. Thumbs up from me!

What control did you use? Mach3?
@andybrunner77607 жыл бұрын
Sorry I just seen it in your comment.. Ok yes Mach3.. I made one Myself about 3 yrs ago and we use it ever day. I went even cheaper then you did. I did it with a stepper Nema 34. I made my a gear reduction with the long timing belt. One switch for homing and it works great.. I need to make a screen like you have.. I go to MDI. Good Video Thanks for posting.

Awesome job! I have been wanting to do this for awhile just want to make mine portable. Have you thought about running a gear reduction? It would slow down the positioned but give better holding torque and higher resolution.
@bellevuesnekkeri9 жыл бұрын
Joshua Russell If you check out sawgear from tigerstop you can see their portable version. They are pricey though. I think a 10´ rail is about 3.5K. I run a 4:1 gear reduction on my cnc with the same servo. on my gantry, plus a 7:1 belt/pulley reduction to increase the torque and accuracy, but this doesnt have to stand up to the forces like on the heavy gantry. Thanks for watching and commenting Joshua
@Regnarrussell9 жыл бұрын
You are certainly correct on the price. Downloaded the patent for the SawGear and cant justify they cost. My thought is to run mine off a Arduino its just been a learning curve but I can always fall back to Mach3. Thanks again for the video

I used a USB controller from Probotix, but they don't carry that any more. I'm looking at Smoothstepper USB (I'm going to try running this from a windows tablet) and Mach3 for this next build. What are you using?
@bellevuesnekkeri9 жыл бұрын
+Ray Jorgensen Nice. I am using an old laptop with parallel port, running win xp, and a touch screen. The screen is custom made, and I spent a HUGE amount of time creating it. But it was kinda educational also. Problem is, I have not used the screen designer since i made this, and has swapped the memory capacity in my brain for something else. In other words....I forgot it:)

@@jecidguerrero1290 There is a integrated keyboard called Auto Calculator that you can activate. it is found under the Operator tab, third choice from the top. When this is activated, it pops up when you press an input field

This is a really awesome fence system you built and the mach screen you made looks great. I like that you made all of the parts out of wood but it looks like an aluminum extrusion, like the tiger stop. One question, does the rail in your table interface with the back stop block, or is that an old hold over from a manual fence system you had before? If it doesn't, is there any issue with the cantilever of the black stop block? I realize you did this so you can literally touch the blade with it and give you really small cuts as well, or zero it out. I saw that it deflected linearly from left to right but your feedback corrected its position, and because you're only hitting it in a worse case head on, that the fact that you're holding the stop block more to one side isn't an issue. Thanks again.
@bellevuesnekkeri9 жыл бұрын
+briancnc Thank you very much. The rail/t-slot that is recessed in the table is from the old manual stop, and does not affect the automatic fence in any way.. The moving stop block is running aprox 2 mm above the table, most due to the fact that I did not want it to collect dust in front of it.I had to make it cantilevered to be able to make short cuts as you say. Its also beneficial to have it made from wood as I can kiss the blade with it. The closed loop system keeps the fence in correct position. Thanks for watching and commenting
