Much more thoughtful and personalized than giving cash in a money holder card. A puzzle to make them work for the gift and a keepsake! Nice!

As we all know, nothing on You Tube is as easy as it looks. It took me about 8 hours to make one. The plan is to make four for gifts; I expect the others to take about 2 hours each. Thanks for the video!

Josh (and anyone doing this type of project with a drill press) - wooden hand screw clamps make it much easier and safer to control small parts. I cut notches in the jaws to grab round parts.

I wouldn’t use a spade bit into end-grain on the drill press especially without a vice. This would probably be best done on a lathe but would require the lathe and about $400 in accessories.

I wonder if there's a way to modify it so that it doesn't come out if you get part of it right and only when you have the full sequence right like a cryptex would.
@JoshWrightWoodworking
@JoshWrightWoodworking Жыл бұрын
There is a way, it's just harder to do. I made a video a while ago making a full size cryptex that requires the full sequence to open. This is just a more diy friendly version.

Hi, Josh, cool project. So it's not really a lock, it's a container? Because we can see the grain and line it up. Still cool. Just expected a lock and wondering if you have any ideas to turn it into one? Also, a version to store a thumb drive and keep it hidden, please?
@JoshWrightWoodworking
@JoshWrightWoodworking Жыл бұрын
You could maybe paint the dials to hide the grain and add numbers insted. I have another video making a bigger, more secure version of this project if it helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIKvZYSXqZZkisk It is harder to make tho

OK stupid question. I don't have a piece of round wood that thick. For me to buy it it would cost quite a boy. You have to have a around inside. I was wondering if I could do the outside square instead. I have some beautiful Especially designed for curving wood that a very kind man gave me years ago. think that would be OK right? Also I've seen videos where they attach the drill to like a makeshift drill press if you know of any videos like that could you tell me maybe Which video is the safest. That's the only thing I'm worried about it's safety
@JoshWrightWoodworking
@JoshWrightWoodworking Жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question, I think square stock would work too and could look pretty cool. As for safety I am not very good with safety myself so I can't give good advise on that. I would say try and use a real drill press and a drill vise to hold the work piece.

@@JoshWrightWoodworking 1st, thank you for replying. Im actually a woman and have to fend for myself. Example, the short story is my brother-in-law took the drill press i bought for my dad, RIP and keeps saying he will give it back, but its been 4 YEARS!!!! It's been impossible to drill a straight hole. Not to mention ridiculously dangerous. I've seen videos on how to Jerry-rigg a drill but also seems unsafe. It sucks.
