I initially loved the handle and the staining job....but had to stop watching when the wedging started. OMG - as a traditional axe lover that was too hard to watch. Ouch that was bad !

@1EliPrice
@1EliPrice 5 жыл бұрын
Richard Bonner It will last as long as you say it will only if he doesn’t actually use it for its intended purpose... I would have made it a super snug fit and the end where the axe head fits, so it stuck out two inches past the end of the axe head. make my wedge cut, then beat on the bottom end of the handle till it drove it to the area I wanted it. Then I would have trimmed off the excess to about an inch and drove my wedge so that it bent outward over the top of the axe head, then take off the remaining excess till it still had a little under an inch still protruding. If this person intends to actually use this axe, that head is coming off in a few strikes.

A properly fitted axe handle with a nice wedge eliminates the need for that epoxy. And the back of the axe handle at the base of head in back. The handle should taper more so it wont work loose.the widest point should be below axe head.

that head fitting thou, that is not a good way to do it. there are gaps and the head can come loose pretty easy. YOu wanna make sure you have to beat on the handle to really get that thing in there. you wanna set the handle upside down with the head towards the floor, and it shouldnt be super easy to whack that handle in the head like it was, it makes a bad fit.
@trippeetoast6440

Thank you to point that out! I felt very sad when I saw all the good job ruined by the poor fitting. But: 1: I really appreciate that it was shown anyway, some people would just jump the step and show the nice looking resin, 2: As this axe will (probably) not be used as intensely as in its past life, the fit will be ok for some hits.
@ProfessionalArmourer
@ProfessionalArmourer 7 жыл бұрын
"beating on the handle" to seat it is NOT the proper way to do it, it cracks the grain and weakens the handle. seating an axe handle is a time consuming and difficult task on its own the wood needs to be carefully and slowly removed so that the head socket and core fit as it the handle grew into the socket. then when it is wedged in place the wood is compressed as much as possible to hold it in place. A resin based epoxy used as a lubricant to set the handle isnt used as much to lock it on, as it is to prevent moisture from penetrating the socket and causing rust to develop, which in turn weakens the hold on the wood. in the past, Axe heads with the handle set were soaked in boiled linseed oil until the wood swelled and then let dry at 100 degree F ball park range for the excess linseed oil to drain and harden this is why so many axes have a "clear" coating on them. its boiled linseed oil.
@trippeetoast6440
@trippeetoast6440 7 жыл бұрын
Scott Schoemann yes true linseed oil is what most people use. handles that you buy at the store have an actual clear coat on them, and this is bad. you want to buy an un-altered wood handle, and put the oil on after ward . linseed oil defiantly lubricates the process but you do not want to soak the handle prior to setting it. this will cause the wood to shrink slightly when you set it. this make the fitting loose once more and all your hard work will be ruined. now when you use the taping method. you hang the axe upside down and use a rubber mallet to knock the handle down into the head. you do not put it on the ground as this will cause cracking and weakening. you roughly shape the head fitting to make sure its super close to squeezing in. and the hang it and pound the handle. this makes a really tight fitting that if done properly will not loosen quickly. hope this clarifies the "pounding into the head" process. as this is the way my family and many other families have done it for generations, i highly recommend this compared to the newer form of resin setting.

I know it’s an old video now and you may have already rehung this axe a time or two, but I notice the grain of the handle running horizontally, do you know if that would give more or less of a shockwave to your hands than a vertical grain handle?
@michaelsmith5792
@michaelsmith5792 2 жыл бұрын
I picked up on this too, also would be easier to split the handle. First rule with axe handles, vertical grain.... 2nd the handle should always go an inch past the head, so when you wedge it bulges keeping the head locked (then trim it down). As a show piece it's nice, but with a heavy work load it won't last long.....
