DIY Ball Joint Replacement: Nissan Rogue

It's time to put the scanner away and get out some air tools!
The wife's Nissan Rogue at 200k miles needs some new front ball joints...

Thanks for this video. My wife's 08 Sentra had the lower ball join break on me when I took her car to the gas station. Thank God I was the one driving. Anyway, we just moved from Oregon to Iowa. Glad it held on for that trip. That would have been a nightmare. After watching your video I think I'll be able to get the job done!

I actually ended up saying screw it and took it to the shop. Once I got underneath the car I saw that the cv joint had come apart and messed up the cv boot pretty badly. I wasn't confident to replace all that so I had a good mechanic just replace the busted ball joint and cv axle which ended up costing me 400 bucks. Not a huge loss.

Ivan, family has 2009 Rogue 150,000 miles which Im currently working on and 2009 Altima. I have changed Altima lower control arm and ball joint from Advanced Auto Parts (cheaper) and were junk. I will look into changing ball joints only on Rogue as you did. You were first person to mention rotor warp with new parts. Ive talked to parts store and they blame me for probable hard braking during break in period. FALSE! Ive stuck with Bosch and last purchase from Dealer. Good vid thanks Steve!

You just said nearly word-for-word what I told my neighbor's nephew today regarding snow tires. Tires are cheaper than ANY accident! Words I've lived by for a long time! 👍 I just had to do a lower ball joint on the trusty '86 Grand Marquis a few weeks back. Misdiagnosed it at first, since I had no play at 12 & 6, and no play at 10 & 4, but had slight play at 2 & 8. Figured wheel bearing right away .... but why nothing at 10 & 4? Strange. I couldn't lean over far enough to see what was moving, so had the wifey come out and try to wiggle the wheel for me. She didn't have the arm strength to get it to move ... and I thought I saw play in the pitman arm, and outer tie rod end, so I replaced both (had the Moog pitman here from years back, so that wasn't a total loss) - didn't fix the problem. That is frustrating. Had to get my neighbor over to wiggle the wheel for me while I looked. Still didn't really see anything, but I could hear it loud and clear. While under there, I noticed the nipple that the grease fitting sits on in this year FoMoCo product, that will recess when the joint is worn out. It was pretty much fully recessed! Bingo. Replaced that, play gone. Noticed a small tear in the boot on that 5 year old NAPA ball joint. That's all it took to finish it off. The other 3 NAPA ball joints I installed in 2005! Well over 150k on them now. Good parts! Not sure what happened with the 2012 NAPA one (the first one failed due to my mistake - inadvertently pumped some grit in there with the grease gun) - guess they cheaped out on the rubber boots, or something must've sliced it out on the road (or off).

Did my qashqai at 150k and for the cost I changed the control arm, no need to remove wheel bearing housing, still a pig to get that ball joint out used a crow bar that made it easier, cheers for the video.

It's a common myth that "rough roads" cause joint and bushing (any suspension part) failure. Actually- it's usually the lack of travel that wears out a small section, then it continues asymmetrically until the tolerances are exceeded. A smooth, flat road is very damaging- because it still contains very small undulations. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is an excellent example of this. Small, repetitive movements are more damaging to the Myelin/bone interface than a full travel.

Nice job on the wife's car! I tend to do the same "early" repair as soon as I catch it on the family's vehicles. They don't tend to "feel" the wear as sensitively as me. When am I making a video? I was supposed to this week but with the training over the last wknd, I have waste oil heater installs during this wk and probably few more in the the upcoming wks. Recording them is not an option, as they're being installed in active shops and noise is too much. it's pretty easy to pull that style control arm (when not rusted!) loosen axle nut, leave the strut bolts alone, separate lower ball joint, swing/rotate knuckle/strut back out of the way, while pushing cv shaft out, just strap/wire the cv shaft up to the strut and the whole knuckle towards back of car (or the side the tie rod is on). the arm comes up level and takes the torque off bushing sleeves, just don't lose any alignment spacers/forget the setting if it has any

I have a Nissan X-trail, Rogues EU cousin, with the same suspension. Weak spot is big rear bush too.Mine is cracked and soft. Ball joint needs replacement too. My fist tought wast to change them separetly, the front bush too, but pressing that out is very worse pain in butt. So a new control arm is going in. About snow tires, Car repair is one thing, but lives can end. Or somebody can end up in a wheel chair.

Had once a 2001 Nissan Micra which had 147000 km in it and the lower balljoints were shot. Brought it to a shop and they replaced the lower control arms as they were pressed type balljoints as well. Btw, changed winter tires today to my current car (Kia Rio) :)

Mevotec(greaseable nipple) makes a control Arm From Rockauto or Moog ball joint. I did control arm it was much better then OEM.22k 2015 Rogue 👌

Most of the aftermarket conto arms are made of Chinesium that won't later long. I agree with the aproach of replacing just the ball joint (555) on the OEM arms

You really can't beat the IR 231 impacts, I've had one now for over 20 years. The only thing I've had to replace is the anvil because it was so worn that the sockets kept falling off the end.

wire wheeling the shart out of the old joint and edge of arm where it goes through makes removal a bit easier, load it up with the press, wood block the arm up and whack the press or cup with small sledgehammer. tighten screw again, whack it repeat or blip the air gun and whack it at the same time =p yeah it took me more than once cussing them to learn the easiest route on many things.....

Ivan, Great video - thank you! I like that type of suspension/knuckle where the strut attaches with two thru bolts. My 90s Escorts were like that but my 02 and 05 Focuses have the pinch bolt type setup and getting the strut out of the knuckle can be a PITA if they have been in a while. The only thing I would question you about was the fact that you didnt use a torque wrench on the axle nut. Ive always thought that the axle nut torque was critical for the longevity of the front wheel bearings. Maybe that isnt so on all cars. Thanks again God bless Paul

Have you had any problems with subframe bushings on the rogue. I just did the ones on my sister's 2017 that she bought back in July the dealer told her she needed strut mounts. Nope needed subframe bushings drives better than when she first test drove she said. But anyway I was wondering I've seen all over the internet that Nissans are plagued for that.

That looked pretty straight forward. Wait till you have to do your XL7. I replaced mine(2002 xl7) about 2 years ago after the joints started to pop through the control arm. Take a look at yours I'll bet they're pretty close. Not fun. I used the moogs (entire control arm) on rock auto tight fit.

Balljoint press? Sledgehammer, spacer, floor jack. (Balljoint Only) 30 seconds out of lower control are, 30-40 seconds to install in lower control are. Old School.

add the press and use the hammer to whack the press and impact to blip it, if it's mostly clean 10 seconds ;) much rust at all? good luck, as you'll have expanded the chinesium steel so badly the new joint will flop around in the hole :))

Ivan a quick Question, ever come across jacking a vehicle particulary my wifes Honda when jacking from rear center point it doesnt lift car enough to get jackstands under pinch welds. Jack has 20 inch lifting height. do you put something under jack to get a higher lift. Seems like all the 3 ton jacks have the same lifting heights. Do you ever put something under the jack to get more height? Thanks for any info. '

Hi Arthur, usually the Harbor Freight floor jacks give me plenty of height for most vehicles. I try to stay away from jackstands on pinchwelds. It either damages them, or they don't exist anymore on older vehicles in the salty states lol! Try placing the stands under a solid subframe member. Definitely use common sense so you don't hurt anything.

if I have to replace a suspension part on my car, I only try to find that Sankei Industry Three 5 brand, no other brands will do for my car, but here in the philippines its a bit expensive and the risk of being sold a counterfeit is unfortunately higher so I need to find an authorized Three 5 seller here to make sure the item is not a fake.

i would have just replaced the entire control arm. picked up pair of control arms tie rods and links for $115 shipped for a nissan juke. I'm sure it was way more cost effective to replace ball joints on the Rogue

I see you press on the center of the ball joint to install it. Is that the best way to apply force to the ball joint assembly? Is the center strong enough to take the load without getting deformed? My concern is when you stated how tight the new ball joint moved, could that tightness be caused by it deforming? Just a thought.

He wasnt pushing on the top of the balljoint. That was thr receiving cup. He was pushing on the bottom. Hope that helps

Good point Pete. Ideally put the force on the outer solid metal case. Here the c-clamp couldn't fit the proper adapters so I had to use the flat cup...

Hey Ivan, just wondering if there's something weird about the Rogue? I usually just pop the ball joint and use a ratchet strap to pull the strut/hub back out of my way. The ball joint is accessible, to fit the press in, this way and you don't have to mess with the axle nut or strut bolts (no alignment).

I think if he would've loosened the strut upper plate in the engine compartment then the alignment wouldn't have been as bad until he got to the alignment shop vs pulling the strut pins unless those weren't the type that align it. You da 'man Ivan. Did you you all see him breaking out all those tools from everywhere..... Ivan does look a little COLD though........

most everything has no alignment on the strut plate and if it's off either struts are worn(made wrong if new), control arm bushing bad, etc. the alignment is done with "aftermarket" offset strut to knuckle bolts, they clearly figured and knew well it would be in the boneyard/recycled before it needed adjusted ;)

@@throttlebottle5906 unless you're one of those people like us mechanics who keep them forever and replace the struts with a quickstrut and send them off to the alignment shop. Did it to my wife's 06 impala Jan of 2017 and surprisingly it didn't need the strut bolt kit or strut grind as they use to do. I replaced everything on the front end including lower control arms, sway bars, rack and pinion which started it all by leaking. I did the whole suspension for right about $1,100 using brand name parts off the floor of a garage. Wish I would've had a lift/hoist but wasn't that lucky. Getting closer to a hoist though. Got a torch kit and pouring a oversize 3rd stall footings and forms this winter/spring then the framing fun begins. It will have a hoist of some type when finished though as I'm not getting any younger and I've always worked off the floor all my life at home so it's long overdue.

Ivan, how long do the snow tires generally last? I'm a big fan of the snow "chains", actually steel cables that work great in snow.

If you put them on only during the winter, they should last at least 4 seasons. They wear out quite fast if driven on hot summer pavement.
