Great video Dean :-D Getting better and better. What I do for my bathbombs (that we used to make in Lush) is that I also mix in some melted (refined) Cocoa Butter.. the refined version doesn't have that cocoa bean choccy smell.. but its the 'no fail' part of the recipe. Also no need for any spritzing in this at all ... my 'LUSH' recipe is: Citric Acid = 1 cup (7.4 ounces) Bicarbonate = 2 cups (17.03 ounces) SLSA Agent = 4th of a cup Kaolin Clay = 10 grams Cream Of Tartar = 4th of a cup Refined Cocoa Butter = 1/2 cup (3.02 ounces) Fragrance Oils = 1 tablespoon Colourings

Tia Lieu Hi there Tia.. yes some people use other butters besides the Cocoa butter, so you could try it, I would say it would have the same effect. I melt mine down and add that to the dry ingredients, you dont need the clay, I have left it out and just used the Creme of Tartar on its own. Let me know how they turn out :-)

The reason why I like this bath bomb tutorial is that you demonstrate how wet the mixture needs to be for a successful mixture.
@lordtj639 жыл бұрын
The Kaolin clay is a wonderful agent for the skin (also Fullers Earth powder) and it also aids in the hardening process... I have seen some soap gurus here on youtube actually using 'Plaster of Paris' in their bombs.. I dont know what effect that has in the drainage sewerage system hehe? But some people add a tablespoon of that into the mix as well. But to be honest Dean your bombs are firm and dense enough anyway, they are the perfect size too. But putting the cocoa butter in will make a hell of a difference, also it will give you better 'handling time' and gives you more time to work with it.. no witch hazel and no spritzing .. bonus! :-)

Hi Dean, Have you ever thought about mixing all the dry and wet ingredients minus the citric acid. Then when all the ingredients are mixed together then add the citric acid. It prevents that chain reaction from adding the wet ingredients. Also, you use food dye, why not soap dye? I know food dye in small amounts is ok, just thought to keep it safe to use the soap dye.Hope you are feeling better.
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
Have not tried that. Might give it a try some time. I use food dye because it gives a brighter color. Mica is also nice but again pastel colors. Soap dyes for always turn out in pastel colors. Im feeling much better thanks. :)

I'm using a mica powder & frosting mine w a bubble bar piped recipe. Hope it goes well. Also using some of the mixture in a silicone mold. Last time I did that they all crumbled. Hi Coree, I sure do answer questions. Happy to help. If the bath bomb is sinking it means its too heavy. There is a specific weight where a bath bomb will not float anymore. Weight to water ratio or something alone those lines. I found a 60mm ball at about 90-100 grams will float. 110+ might sink. 130+ will sink. I leave these for 5-7 days to cure now.

There are INCI maximum usage amounts for all fragrance and essential oils. Some oils can cause skin sensitivity if used over a certain amount. Please check for proper usage rates before using, but generally speaking essential oil is not stronger than a fragrance oil. Depending on the scent, comparable amounts would generally achieve similar results.

mukwah1111 It should make lime green water. If you just put all 2ml of food colouring into the mix it will set off the acid. Hi, thanks so much for sharing a great recipe and technique. What is the .35 oz of rubbing alcohol used for? It is the last item in the list of ingredients. Thank you.
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
It's just used as a bond for the wet ingredients. You can use water like I did in the video, but now I have found it's better to use Rubbing Alcohol in the mix with the oils and fragrance. New video soon.

Hi dean can I use coconut oil instead of the almond oil for bath bombs?

I have been told by others that it works but I have not tried it myself.

Hi What should I do if after 24-48 hours I can't get my bath bomb out of my bottom bold?
@DeanWilson9 жыл бұрын
+Gabriela Cygan I don't know... Why did you leave it there so long? I normally take it out within 15 minutes max, otherwise it sets with the plastic mold. Maybe tap it lightly with a spoon to loosen it.

love your videos! plus i was wondering how big the molds were?
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
The molds I used were 60mm, but now I use 62mm which you can see in the new bath bomb video.

hi polysorbate what benefit? Is pure alcohol in spray bottle? caolin clay ball hard for your help?
@DeanWilson5 жыл бұрын
Poly-80 disperses the oils and mica in the water, so you dont end up with a oil slick or mica line around the tub. The rubbing alcohol I used (65%) helps bind the powders together. The clay makes the bath bombs hard.

Could I use mica powder instead of food color dye without effecting anything?
@DeanWilson4 жыл бұрын
Yes 100%. I should not have used food dye in this video. But I would not use food dye anymore. Only safe mica or dyes for skin.

Have you tried cornstarch before instead of Kaolin Clay?
@DeanWilson5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I found cornstarch to make the bath bombs crumble.. thats just my experience tho.

we can make them in silicone molds ??

I dont think so, silicone is normally not hard enough to push together. But worth a try.

Hi Dean, thanks for sharing your recipe. After weeks of failure I’ve finally managed to get a great bath bomb that’s smells great and is pretty solid... quick question...I dry for 48 hrs and after this I weigh each bomb... do you know why the weights range from 112g to 128g? What can I do to get a more consistent weight? Thanks Anthony
@DeanWilson4 жыл бұрын
Im not sure why the weight would go UP and not down. Are you using something different in my recipe?
@anthonykillip60514 жыл бұрын
Dean Wilson I use your recipe gram for gram for dry ingredients. My only change is I reduce fragrance oil by 5g and add 5g more almond oil to balance...

May I ask what weight is your bath bomb when dried?

Its been years since I made bath bombs but im planning on making them again soon. From what I remember, they were 100 to 135 grams each.

Hi Dean, Can I substitute essential oils for the fragrance? Thank you for sharing and I enjoy your videos. :)

Dean you are my daily dose of inspiration. I used your recipe and my bombs were very dusty. They have not cracked or fallen apart but when used there was not a lot of fizz. PLS HELP lol...Do you have any suggestions??? Also do you use cornflour???
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't use cornflour. Each time I have used it the bath bombs turn out soft and powder like. Did you use all the ingredients I used?
@kylielarkham92678 жыл бұрын
+Dean Wilson (SentinelSoap) the only ingredient I didn't use was the polysorbate-80. The bombs are hard but just dusty and very slight fizz. I am awaiting some moulds as the ones I have I don't like at all but I don't think that would have anything to do with it.
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
The clay will make the bath bombs hard. When you made them was the mix like sand or wet sand?
@kylielarkham92678 жыл бұрын
+Dean Wilson (SentinelSoap) at first it was like just damp sand, after 2 I added a few more spritzed of alcohol and it was like wet sand, those ones aren't as dusty as the first 2 but still dusty. I will wait for my new moulds and try again maybe it just wasn't quite wet enough. Thank you so much for your response and help. You really are my inspiration.

Thanks, very helpful, i also want to try the brambleberry.com colorants " lab colors" no bleed and no ring so it claims, ill be testing these colorants this week, another thingi have noticed bvelieve it or not , when you clean your tub ( remove the soap scum) from the access or left over oils from the soap the colorant is less likely to stick, i think this is due to its clean smooth surface and cant " catch or attach its self to he access dirts or scum left behind in the bath) . i will be testing this out again, we have 3 baths i will allow one bath that is hardly used to accumiliate the scum for a week and them test to see if it sticks and one in a clean bath all with food color , d&c, and michas ( michas i find tend to stick regardless) thank so much u been so helpful. nd thanks for the drops per gram information,

is this the recipe you used for the bath bombs in the really foamy bath bomb demo videos?
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
+CME016 Yes, but remember it has a lot less water. In a full bath it will not foam as much as that test. Water to bath bomb ratio was high.

How long do you keep the bombs in the mold? The last two times I tried to do bombs, they would crack and fall apart.
@DeanWilson8 жыл бұрын
+Christine O'Neal It depends on the environment you work in. It's really trial and error. If you do 5-6 bath bombs, try to release one at 10 minutes, 20,30 minutes. see which one works best.

Hey Dean! I've watched this video probably a dozen times for inspiration. Now that I'm getting to actually make some of these, I have a question ... In the video you say "10 GRAMs" of sweet almond oil and "5 GRAMS" of Polysorabte 80. However, in the written ingredients, they are both measured in MLs. I'm not very good with metrics, being from the USA. Are GRAMs and MLs interchangeable like that? Thanks!
@DeanWilson9 жыл бұрын
+Cindy Jones Lantier Yes, 10ml or 10 grams liquid is the same - for oils anyway.

Just to bond the oils and fragrance together with the dry mix.

What ingredient can I add to the mix so the color doesn't stick to the bathtub?
@DeanWilson7 жыл бұрын
Im glad you asked. I would suggest NOT using Food Color dye for the bath bombs. I would only suggest using Mica powder (skin safe). Using Polysorbate-80 will help the mica disperse with the oils.
