For the youngsters, this is how the older generation were taught. Clear, precise explanations with real world example. No music or dancing were required. Excellent video.

Kickass project! Oh, and another way to tell positive from negative on LEDs (in case you've salvaged one from some circuit, and end up cutting the leads the same length), is that the LED "bulb" part has the round rim at the base of it, as FLAT on one of the pole sides 😉👍

And by looking inside, there iis always big and a small part. The big is the negative cathode anvil and the small is the positive anode post.

This would be a great project to do with a kid to teach them basic skills and electronics. Include some soldering, and it makes a nice skill building exercise. 😊
@EarthlingEDC3 ай бұрын
@theunknownatheist3815 I agree with you. I took out the soldering to make it easier, but I was soldering what I was in elementary school. It's one of many things that I appreciate that my dad taught me.

With this great idea, I would think in a pinch you could do it using electrical tape if you didn't have the bands. Great video and thanks for sharing.
@EarthlingEDC3 ай бұрын
@mutstumbo - That would definitely work as an alternative way to build one of these if you did not have access to the inner tubes, but I don't think it would last as long. Thanks for posting.

This seems like a modern update on the old "Pak light" concept which used a 9V battery and a battery clip salvaged from the old style Duracell 9V battery. You had to solder those together but hikers and campers from the early 80's might remember them. One thing to beware of is to not use lithium primary cells if it might get wet; think 'hoverboard flames' on a smaller scale when lithium meets water.
@EarthlingEDCАй бұрын
@P_RO_ - Thank you for your post. That's interesting about the Pak Light." I'll see if I can dig up an example. I had shared this idea on a flashlight forum and sensed that there was some real pushback on using Alkaline batteries forthis design, because of possible leakage. I have not seen that as a major issue when using Alkaline batteries though. Thanks for the reminder in regard to lithium primary cells and water.

Great DIY project and I like the price! Thanks for another good one. So Phil, seeing your saved bits and pieces reminds me of, or is exactly the same stuff I save. I even own some of the exact same EDC tools, knives, etc. But especially the swiss-tech. Odd little thing, but well made, right? I've had it for around 20 years? It does have it's useful implements. We also share the same first name. Two Ls or one? Still catching up on your video history. All good stuff. Have a great weekend. KK

Nice minimum electric project. Works also with a 3V coin cell. See for example Felix Immler "How to add a LED Light on your Victorinox Swiss Army Knife". Even without the tubes the light will work under water. Only thing that will happen over time is corrosion, that's why Victorinox did not bother to make their LED flashlight in their knifes water resistant. Under water It also should strain the battery a little bit more, since you have a small electrolysis running. ;)
@EarthlingEDC3 ай бұрын
You will definitely get a bit of rust on the two batteries and I would avoid getting salt water on it, but the fresh water is not really a problem for it as long as it is not inwoter for a prolonged period. In regard to coin cells, I had considered that, but like the longer life I get from the two AAA batteries. Many thanks for your post.

Very useful, it would be interesting to see if it could be made with usbc rechargeable AA batteries!
@EarthlingEDC3 ай бұрын
@thumperstick - I'm sure you could, but then you would lose the extended shelf life, the water resistance and some of the extended runtime that comes with using Alkaline batteries. thanks for taking the time to post.
