Hello ! Yes, normally, the cover is always a few millimeters longer than the signatures, generally 5mm more on each side

I've tried several different types of stitch for book binding and I can't ever seem to get the tension right enough any suggestions

Hello! For exposed seams I recommend using waxed thread and checking the tension after each stitch. It doesn't have to be too tight or too loose. Like everything, it's a matter of practice and patience.
