The term -proof is an accurate armourer term from medieval europe and the English civil war. When a noble asked an armourer to make a suit of armour, or a roundhead got some pre-made armour, the armourer was often asked to 'prove' it was effective. The armourer would thrust a sword at the brestplate with all his might in front of the noble to satisfy his fear of being run through. If the weapon did not penetrate it was deemed sword proof. Because it was proven to be so. Nobody took anyones word that the armour was sound, demonstration was required, and armour was tested for each weapon, a sword proof breast plate was not spear proof unless it was proven to be so, for example. I picked this up watching historical youtube content on the english civil war. One of the last wars with gunpower that combatants still wore metal armour. Some metal breatplates where infact bullet-proof (the armourer would fire a pistol at near point blank range).
@mondaysinsanity81934 жыл бұрын
Theres a reason metal armor requires demonstration metal is not uniform no matter whathe samd process on two seperate ores will never create thd exacts same durability. This is a big reason steal plates are sketchy as fuck the PROCESS is rated to stop rounds(they tested some examples) but every plate made the same way will never bs the same strength leading to dud plates that can hardly stop anything every now and then

This has got me thinking. I know fiberglass is a great option but I'm concerned with when/if(leaning more to when) the armor fails and the amount of debris that bullet brings with it into a wound. Delaminated fiberglass...well fibers are nasty things as most people are aware. Cost notwithstanding, it's a lot easier to pick kevlar out of a wound with minimal additional damage vs literal glass fibers tearing up a wound even more. That's a thought I developed after talking about something similar to an army field medic and a civ doc in my circle of friends so disclaimer there. Any additional adjustments or changes would likely come into play when potentially using this method for additional armor(i.e. some form of bracing/support system for a combined shoulder and chest/back plate to reduce strain) but that would be a further down the road issue. Also i don't remember anything being said about it in this or the previous video but, how tightly sealed was your mold with only 4 bolts? Were the 4 bolts really sufficient? If not, I'm worried about addition layer delamination risk. Love the design though. I also think your methods are practical and highly repeatable with a fairly low enough complexity that almost anyone could repeat the process and good results.
@ArgolasBowmaster4 жыл бұрын
@ that's a solid idea. If I can remember to do so, I'll have to record the build process and show the tweaks made to it. May take a bit though since I'm in the process of moving.

One tip I got for the mold making, you made the M and F parts 1:1 which is often fine but for such a thick _(þicc)_ part it would help to have the M part a bit undersized and/or F part a bit oversized, It would help a lot with getting even pressure on the whole part and make removing it a lot easier. ... But I guess since you're not working with this anymore, this is more of a tip to your viewers

Having seen the shoot test, I wonder if having thin metal inside between some layers would have helped it more with the rifle calibers. If the outer most layer and say, 2 inner layers were something like .5mm of metal it would've acted like spaced armor with the added bonus of the "devils cloth" and carbon fiber slowing the round down even more and breaking them apart.
@brainplay80604 жыл бұрын
No, you'll need more than that much metal to stop a rifle round. Neither carbon fiber nor fiberglass has the tensile strength of kevlar to resist crushing damage. But kevlar will not stop rifle rounds by itself either. Most armor plate is high carbon steel and at least 1/4in thick (6.5mm). And that's just enough to stop most basic rifle rounds like 5.56mm or 7.62mm. Most shoulder plates are there to prevent shrapnel from explosives or pistol rounds from passing through your arm, into your thin armpit/upper side, and into your heart which is uncovered by body armor.
@flashingsword4 жыл бұрын

If you were going to make these for production - I'd create a second mold with reinforced steel that's been sharpened - so you can put the over sized, but shaped, part into the second press and simply by bolting it down - it cuts the shape for you rather than using the cutting disc. Simple 2 ton press would be able to clip through the excess fiber glass/epoxy that you don't need.

Using a stiff plastic squeegee or resin spreader rather than a brush will speed things up abit. Always helpful with so many layers. Also, using fined rollers called “bubble busters” is very helpful to get all the air out. The laminate is strongest when it’s got just enough resin in it to saturate it, and no more. The bubble buster rollers, which come in different lengths and diameters, as well as barrel shaped, ( thick in the middle, tapering to the ends) really help in concave surfaces like this. You are doing the same thing by pressing the two halves together, but it must be a pain to cram all those layers in. The rollers ought to speed things up. You could use pieces closer to the finished size and cut down on waste as well. 2 part Epoxies usually only give you 1- 1 1/2 hours of working time before they are too stiff to wet out the cloth, speed is good.

@@DavidGuyton, I get your argument about materials prices, but considering the point of this project and its intended purpose, coupled with the fact that kevlar is the current industry standard for this exact application, seems like a no brainer. Still, I freely admit my excitement and anticipation for the next video. If it performs even half as well as anticipated, replacing the fiberglass with kevlar will likely only improve the overall performance and effectiveness if this particular piece. This is still a highly interesting project and thank you for putting this series of videos together.
@piratewhoisquiet4 жыл бұрын
@@mikeycrabtree123 Kevlar is not the industry standard for this application. Aramid fiber is only used in conjunction with ceramics for rigid armour, which this is, and the current industry standard for rigid armour is AR500 steel plate; at least for civilians. Aramid fiber _is_ the industry standard for _flexible_ armour, which this is not. Using Kevlar for this project would not provide any significant performance increase that would not be offset by a much steeper price increase. The strength of aramid fiber is what provides flexible armour using it the bullet resistance. The fiber strength of glass or carbon is only one of many factors that provide this armour with its bullet resistance. In composite rigid armour using ceramics, it is the ceramic that provides the bullet resistance. There is really no reason to use any kind of aramid fiber to construct this kind of armour. Also, Kevlar is a proper noun, needing an upper case first letter, because it is a proprietary material manufactured by DuPont. This is also one of the reasons it is so expensive.

Just a note about Carbon Fiber, if your going to sand it for a finish add extra layers. Because once you sand it that layer is compromised and has lost its strength. Love the video

One way to cover the exposed upper shoulder make another plate to cover inside biceps. After you composite then you use three liquid nano rino liner maybe make a 12 to 16 gauge then repeat your fiber composites

Very glad you made this as I doubt youtube would have recommended me your videos other than this one, or that I'd have even watched them. Seems like a great channel, I'll check it out, at least while I'm waiting for that test! I expect it will perform about to about level IIIa standards, and handle four or five rounds of 5.56x45 before sustaining critical damage. Never seen this kind of armour tested with 7.62x39. Fuck the commenters saying use Kevlar, I just want to see someone testing different kinds of epoxy resin binders. Whether something more brittle would work better, as it could simulate the function of ceramics in modern composite armour, or if something more pliable would be more effective at resisting layer separation. That would be the most important factor to decide before even thinking about using Kevlar for this kind of armour. EDIT: It would probably be most effective to also layer types of binder, having a more brittle curing resin on the top layers while having the more pliable underneath.
