Those are Awesome and wish I could of seen Ben's face when you gave them to him. I did want to share a story of my late Uncle. He made several of these over his 65 years as a wood worker and if anyone out there plans on doing these he told me to make sure the grain of the wood is up and down opposite of the cutter or you can find yourself holding a broken handle. He said it's like making a baseball bat. I inherited most his shop when he passed away so I have some he made many years ago.

kagnewmp12 thanks for sharing your story. I’m sure those tools have a special place in your shop. Ben did love them. Your uncle was right about the grain of the wood. I mentioned that in another lathe tool build not long ago. Again, thanks for sharing. Happy turning.

I have made a few. I found a set of pry-bars from Harbor Freight with square stock bars and plastic handles. Takes less than an hour to make a tool. You can get two or three tools out of a $15 set. You have to un-harden the ends before working. Very easy just heat to glowing red and let cool naturally. I do like your method of working the metal and shaping the ends. Thanks for the vid
@LSatch
@LSatch 5 жыл бұрын
paul elliott that’s a great idea. I’ve seen those at harbor freight but never thought about using them for that. Do you add a carbide cutter to just shape the end to your desired profile?

Nice, out of all the videos I have seen making these you are the only person to key the bar before applying epoxy !! You can use a hit wire while the wood is in the lathe to make the black rings works perfectly and looks good, just using fencing wire and two wooden handles, heat it up and spin the lathe and apply. Would have loved my dad to make me these but I lost him just as I knew him. thanks.

Thanks. Captain Eddie went out of business but there are other sources. Just google carbide bits. Congratulations on getting your first lathe. I made a mistake of buying tools I couldn’t use with my first lathe. The carbide cutters are a lot easier to learn with. Learning how to sharpen traditional turning tools can be intimidating and hard to learn. Once you master the carbide tools, I recommend buying the cheaper traditional tools first so you can learn how to sharpen them before you invest in the ones that are well over $100. Good luck

I followed Capt. Eddie instructions to a hole in the center of a half inch round bar to insert a 1/4" square bar with allen screws, also one with a 45 degree angle, they make aggressive tools good for hollowing , also I took a half inch bar, attached a pipe coupling then a 1/2 inch square bar (also from Grizzley ) with allen screws, makes a monster roughing out tool . Of course grind a sharp angle on the end of these bars, they're usually long enough you can make 2 tools from one bar , there are several videos on making these if ya look .

Thank you for the nice video. I plan to make my own tools and will follow your example. However, I must say that you have the patience of Job to use a Dremel cutting wheel to make the reliefs for each of the carbide inserts. As for me, I would probably break out the angle grinder with a cutting disc and do things a lot faster....perhaps faster to screw things up. I'll take my chances. If that doesn't work, I'll break out the Dremel and do things your way. Again, thanks for the informative and great video.
@LSatch
@LSatch 5 жыл бұрын
Glasscutr thanks. The reliefs aren’t all that critical. Captain Eddie used super glue to secure the bit. Since these were gifts to my son I wanted to make them look as professional as possible. Good luck with yours, take your time ad be safe.
