Where did you get your thermix from? I got 2 bags from a local fireplace shop. Took 4 weeks to get it. I didn't order enough.

Thank you for your comment. The insulation helps to keep the liner hot, reducing creosote, and increasing draft.

Here in Norway it has become more common (I have red) not to insulate, but rather keep the space round the chimney liner as ventilation. The condensation is drained in the bottom of the liner. Maybe the smoke is hot enough to break down poison gasses without any insulation ? I dont know. Its cheaper and less work too but wont last as long. Creosote is no good neither for peoples health or the environment. I am just an amateur though

@@roysmedsli8898 The insulation also reduces condensation. Yea, creosote is not good for people or the environment also causes chimney fires if not cleaned regularly.

Thank you for your kind comment. If your chimney is taking water from outside it must have cracked bricks or the mortar has fallen out. A redo should help the problem. If not, you could try spraying the outside of the chimney with a good concrete sealer. Good luck.

I need help, I did DIY and inserted a stainless steel liner(the rigid one) into a brick chimney. I wrapped the liner with quality glasswool but I got issues gettimg stuck cuz the wool was amassing in some areas,so I had to remove the glasswool and I anyway installed the liner. I was thinking to fill the void between the liner and the masonry with some compound, but I live in easterb europe and I couldn't find anyfhing specific for this purpose(they don't line chimneys). What best alternative can u recommend me for thermix?

@@BasaPete do you think it will work fine mixed with cement and water? I see some people pouring in dry vermiculite but I find it odd

@@dominic6055 Vermiculite, portland cement and water should work just fine. I'd try a test mix of 6 vermiculite to 1 cement ratio. Maybe even a 8:1 ratio.

By-the-way, Tubinox stainless steel chimney liner has a lifetime warranty, and adding Thermix extends the life to 50-70 years. But if something goes wrong, it would be quite difficult to remove the Thermix so you could remove the liner. But it's possible.

Not exactly sure of the total cost. Stainless steel liner approximately $600. Chimney insulation approximately $300.

Overkill with the zinc flashing. Cement flaunching is fine

I disagree. Flaunting can absorb water and crack with changing temperatures. After time it will expose the bricks and mortar to the same fate.

That chimney insul mix is nothing more than vermiculite and Portland cement and you can get from swimming pool supplier for 8 bucks a bag it's called pool base same stuff

I couldn't find pool base with vermiculite, do u know how the maximum size the vermuculite bits have to be? Is there alternative to vermiculite, like expanded clay?

We use wood, much cheaper than oil and a lot nicer on really cold winter’s day. Plus I like the exercise of doing up wood.

@@BasaPete I have to replace my wood stove, the inspector wants me to remove the clay tiles to make room for an insulated liner and put a new hearth in. The cost for the liner hearth and stove I could heat my house with oil the rest of my life!

@@mr.redneck2715 geesh. My oil budget is $9,000+ this year. 1300 gallons. 900 a month for 10 months. Getting a hot water heater and hoping to do what this fella did because its either a 5" insert wirh a lego sized wood stove or a metal.chimney through a wall. I'd rather destroy my 6" flue and pray I can fit an insulated pipe where the inner diameter is still 6" so I can properly burn wood in there.
