DIY Compost Tumbler Bin

I had an idea for a big 55 gallon compost bin at less than half the price of smaller bins...maybe it will work? Spoiler...it's awesome! Not everyone has the tools to build something like this so here's another great option.

A note- if the bin doesn’t have holes for oxygen to pass through you may want to consider drilling a few on the side. It’s counterintuitive but compost needs to breathe to successfully decompose and it will actually help it to not smell

If you wash the egg shells and let them dry out you can put thwm in the blender and mix it with your oyster shells for the quails calcium.

Try having neighbors on all 4 sides with big chimes, one of them ties a ribbon around them to stop the noise when it gets too windy, whew !!!

You schould name all the quail & jus find different color rubber bands or something around there ankles to tell them apart. You could even have ppl send in suggestions 4 names. I think that would be really fun. You'll have 2 keep a color chart 2 keep track of who's who..

Very educational. I think it might’ve been liquid glucose not glycerin, because glycerin is used to make soap. I don’t think it’s edible.

The barrel was labeled food grade glycerin. Definitely edible but very sweet

If you would have used a piano hinge on door, it would help keep the door from warping in the heat. Very good composter.

Piano hinge would be a good idea. Plastic drums are made from the same thing they make playgrounds out of. Very UV resistant and they retain their shape in harsh conditions. I think it’s called HDPE. Tough stuff

My problem is that the door on mine warped as soon as I cut it out. It has a tighter curve than the drum. No problem with it warping the on the hinge side.

As someone who knows nothing about gardening or composting, I would have thought some rain getting in the barrel would be good to help with breaking it down into compost; and if there was a ton of water, like too much, then that could just get dumped out of the door

Yes it did but not terribly. The latch I chose does a pretty good job of keeping it in place. I can still tumble the bin without compost falling out. I think you'd have to frame the door with wood or something else that doesn't warp from heat to keep it from happening.

You can absolutely compost both of them. Onions may deter worms but in a tumbler there are no worms. Both citrus and onions will compost just fine
