I love that the covers are made of canvasses. That's such a neat idea! eta: oh cool -- I've never heard of the French link stitch, but I've actually been using it without knowing what it's called in my case binding stuff for a while now. I "discovered" it after some experimenting because I was trying to find a way to get neat, individual stitches on the inside, instead of one long line of thread. Nice to know what the stitch is actually called! I don't do coptic but I've always thought it would look neat on something with an open spine.

The closeups were very helpful. I eventually realized that each of the Xs of the French Link is a separate entity - they do not continuously link together. Edit: Apparently this is incorrect and the FL stitches DO in fact link to each other. Except mine didn't stay evenly spaced for some reason. They looked like Xs that got crossed at lower and lower points and not in the middle. If I did it correctly, I get a blank spot inside the signature at the FL stitch because the thread goes to the outside of the signature; this is intentional and not an error. I watch your videos many, many times at .75 speed or even .50 speed. Wish I could give a LIKE for each viewing. Love all of your videos. I also found the traditional French Link stitch method you mentioned in your video. Thank you for this. I'll keep trying until I get it right.

Oooooh, I tried my hand at acrylic pour and am not really thrilled enough to hang it somewhere on my wall. But it’s cute enough to use as a sketchbook cover. Oh, wait, now that I’m writing this out I realize it’s not canvas board, but actual canvas. Shoot. Perhaps I can pry off the canvas from the frame, stick it to chipboard and use it like that. I can always repurpose the frame.

Hey Jennifer! I’ve watched a lot of your videos and I love them. but I’ve noticed that most of the processes are tedious. There are a ton of inexpensive methods of speeding the process. You can build something that’s called a book plough and it allows you to trim your pages with immense speed. It’s basically the same as building a book press and pulling a box cutter razor against the pages! Also when you fold the signatures you can fold all of the pages at once if you press them against a fence (like a ruler) hope you get this and maybe even respond if you can. Have a good rest of quarantine! 😊

Another question. So you have a video on doing Coptic binding with more than one needle? I've seen shots of people using five or six needles and have no idea how to do that. Also, can you use beads using more than one needle?

Hi! I have made my very first books using the Coptic stitch and my only two, I'm still very new to this. I was wondering if there was a way to do the French Link after the Coptic stitching was done? I did give it try but it didn't look right so what I decided to do is put an X shape design in the middle of the book so it didn't look like I left a complete row of stitching out. I would send a picture but I'm not sure that I can?

I loved this combination. It was obvious (to me at least) that you put some real time into how to finish off that last signature and cover while maintaining the look of the link stitch. Well done! I've saved the video as this is one I'll definitely be trying (probably the very next book!). On a side note, I've been trying to find a tutorial on how to bind an Ethiopian binding and I'm having no luck at all. Basically it looks very much like a traditional Coptic binding, but there are multiple loops around the cover board. I may be wrong, but couldn't you simply make multiple loops around the cover and attach it the way you would any other Coptic bound book? I've been experimenting myself, just not sure if I'm doing it right. If you know of or can find something and are willing to share either by email or with a tut, I'd love it! Love all of your vids. When I can subscribe to the Patreon channel, I most assuredly will (finances allowing.....*sigh). Thank you for all of your hard work!

Could one add a cover to a book like this by wrapping leather (or thick fabric) around it and glueing it to the outsides of the boards? I like that it lies flat, but for a book to take into the wild outdoors, the exposed stitching on the spine is just asking for -trouble- dust and moisture... :D
