Alum is a special salt to make those crystals. Baking powder woulndt bring the same results. You need to add another tablespoon Alum because some amount already reactet with the water and got stuck to the pipe cleaner :)

Do you need to allow the glue to dry for any length of time before letting it in the boiling solution? Also, how long should I let the solution cool the second time before putting the shell back in? This is really cool, and I can't wait to try it with alum powder! I've been making crystals with Borax, and I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

My chemistry professor still has some apprehensions of making these. She thinks that even though they will be coated with acrylic that they may still cause skin irritation. I fell like people won’t excessively grab it and also that people aren’t going to be tossing it around. Instead of taking all those extra steps of reheating the solution, adding more alum and dipping it in again wouldn't you get the same effect of bigger crystals if you just left them in longer? I've seen lots of crystal making methods over the years and I've never even heard of this, you're just supposed to saturate the solution as much as possible and leave the string/crystal seed in for a few days to 2 weeks or more. Unless alum behaves differently to other salts??

What's the chemistry behind this? What makes it stick to something and come out as crystals?
@promontorium6 жыл бұрын
The alum bonds to itself chemically. It perpetuates its own crystalline form as more material solidifies. That's why it always begins with alum. With the little turtle hideout alum was glued to it, and the liquid alum bonded with it. Notice it only bonded with other alum. The liquid also forms crystals on its own as it cools which are more dense (than the liquid), and get slightly stuck to a surface as it grows (like the pipe cleaner in the first part), but it doesn't chemically bond with anything but itself. So if you broke apart the crystals from the pipe cleaner, you would find the pipe cleaner whole and the crystals were just clinging to it, not merging with it in any way.

Awesome and very helpful video but, I would like to ask a question : Can I make a different shape (a heart for exemple) with the pipe cleaner or it is obligatory to just roll it? I have bought all the ingredients and I was wondering if there is this possibility. Keep up the good work!

I actually tried it 2 times! The first time a mediocre and fragile layer of crystal was created around the heart, along with a slightly bigger crystal at the edge of the heart. The second time no crystal was created around the heart but a giant crystal appeared in the end of the heart. Moreover I would like to ask the proportion of the food coloring needed as my crystals are mainly white, although I poured food coloring. Sorry for any mistakes in the text and thank you very much in advance. Also I observed that your pipe cleaners are much "fluffier",to say, if you understand what I mean, than those that I used
