Hi I'm trying to make the CuSO4 crystal now, but I have a question: How do you remove the thread (used to hang the cystal seed) from the grown crystal?Looks like it's contained in the growing crystal, and I think i'll destroy the crystal if I pull it out.

What's the purpose of the nail polish? Can I use spray varnish or even resin to lock in and protect it?
@alanbanh6 жыл бұрын
As the crystals have water in them, nail polish prevents it from drying out. Without it, it will dry up and be crumbly.
@Deviance1906 жыл бұрын
Actually, the crystals formed are pure CuSO4, which will absorb water from the air and the surface will become CuSO4 - 5H2O which is crumbly. Also Copper(II) Sulfate is classed as a corrosive agent at high molarity. therefore the varnish is to protect it from the moisture in the air and protect your hands too.
@Linus-nq2op3 жыл бұрын
@@Deviance190 Close but wrong, the crystals formed are CuSO4*5H2O (visible by its blue color), if you leave it in dry air, it can dry out and form CuSO4 (without the water), which will make a white crumbly solid on the surface.

Theoretically a magnetic field can affect the Cu2+(copper) and SO42- (sulfate) ions in the solution, but to make visible manipulations to the shape you'd need an extremely strong magnetic field, if it does work at all.
