I LOVE LOVE LOVE! That you show your project to open the video then say to stick around to see how you build it. I find myself skipping to the end of most other KZbinr vids to see finished product to see if I'm even interested in it. You do a fantastic job presenting your product. Well done.

April, I have to say I'm totally blown away with your videos! Not sure how I came on your channel, but when I first saw it I was a bit skeptical, thinking "oh yea, right - just another pretty face in the wrong world". Man, was I ever wrong and I apologize for even thinking like that. You are the real deal, and coming from a heritage of fine woodworking in my family I have to say you are way beyond just a pretty face. I've viewed probably more than half your videos now (since I subscribed a couple weeks back) and to say I'm impressed is an understatement for sure! You have a very unique approach - I can see you have abilities and skills far beyond many of the procedures you have posted so far, but now I understand your goal to keep it simple and easy for the beginners. And definitely don't worry about pocket holes not being a "true craftsmanship" approach. I'm in the industrial world of woodworking, and can tell you many of the automated machinery manufacturers that produce heavy duty machines for pocket hole joinery realize that this unique joinery system is not just a "cheap and novel" way of construction. It has it's place and is here to stay. While we do use dado, mortise and tenon as well as dowel construction in our shop - pocket holes are also routinely used, which justifies the $6K machine we purchased just for boring those holes! So keep on doing what you do - it's so refreshing to look forward weekly to your videos. And I also commend you for your exquisite yet simple taste in colors. You have a true talent when it comes to color choices. Actually, I guess I'm really impressed with just about everything you do; your projects, your shop build, your techniques and your totally unpretentious attitude towards how you present yourself. Last compliment - you reply to comments and participate with your audience. Wow! An effort too many on KZbin just don't get. So thanks for so many things, and you have a loyal fan here! From a seasoned woodworking who has seen more than his share of "wanna-be's". And having gone through probably 40+ employees in my four decades of running a production shop - I'd hire you in a heartbeat! Go girl! You have my thumbs up for bringing this world of woodworking into the homes of so many who heretofore would never have realized just how satisfying and rewarding it is to do things for yourself. mike

Mike, you've made me blush! Your kind words are very humbling and it warms my heart to hear your feedback. I'm glad you stumbled on my channel and I'm also glad you weren't disappointed. It's great to hear your stance on pocket holes as well...: ) meaning I'm glad not everybody is looking down on me for using them so much. I'm with you, I believe they have a place and are around to stay. For the audience I'm going after, I know I will be using more of them. Thanks again for your kind comment. Cheers.

April Wilkerson cuskit Mike couldn't have said it better! Word for word! That's how I felt when I first stumbled upon her channel. I would never have started my own workshop and taken a 'woodworking class for women' if it weren't for April. She took some of the fears I had out of just going for it! You make it look so easy. I refer to your videos over and over to learn on my own. Truly inspirational! And love her sass, I might add! And now... I'm obsessed with wood!! HA!! I should make a tshirt that says that! Too bad we all (woodworkers on KZbin) don't live close to each other so we could have 'build' parties! Anywho, thanks once again for all you do...teaching and putting up with us "wanna-be's"! ~Michelle :)

Hi April, It may be a little hard to see, but the Icon is the front of a Tote Gote mini bike, a utilitarian little scooter primarily used for hunting. It was developed by Ralph and Bond Bonham in the late 50's, early 60's. I have one and it will go just about anywhere at about 8 MPH or so, low geared fun. Be good, C.

Just discovered your channel tonight! Darn it , I need more tools! I've watched probably six videos so far, all projects that would make my super girly 4 yr old "Daddy's Girl" REALLY HAPPY! I'm going to keep watching and hope I figure out how to improvise with the tools I do own. Materials are so expensive these days it pays to buy the proper tools before destroying a $50 sheet of wood. At least that's been my experience! Appreciate what I've seen here so far! keep up the great work!

When cutting wide boards vertically, on edge consider making and using a auxiliary fence that is taller than the fence that comes with the saw. Its one of those things you will eventually use again (you can use it for making raised panels, tongue and groove joints, spline joints, etc) but more importantly it will provide better support for more consistent cut.
@AprilWilkerson10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I'll look into building one. This was the first time I've done a cut like that and it was unplanned. It was pretty intimidating! Besides the taller fence did I do it correctly? Do people typically use their hands like I did or do they use a push stick?
@wjphillip10 жыл бұрын
April Wilkerson I wouldn't use a push stick for that operation. Push sticks are a necessity but over used on utube, probably due to advertising and safety freaks. (safety freaks being the commenters) I prefer my hand on the wood if it isn't too close to the blade. Too close being a personal preference. I might consider feather boards to keep it tight against the fence. I might use more than one, putting the second an inch or so above the bottom one.
@razorworks994210 жыл бұрын
Bill Phillip Great answer!!
@btrswt3510 жыл бұрын
Yeah a featherboard would have been a great idea too! I would also agree with not always using a push stick. If one is comfortable enough with their hands, they can get better cuts that way. I also think using push sticks can cause kickback sometimes. Everyone has to figure out their own comfort level and do what is right for them.
@razorworks994210 жыл бұрын
David Mm I'm a bit old school in that some, so called safety features and or tools, create more of an issue than not! After 50+ years of making stuff, professionally and home projects, I can still hear, got both eyeballs, all ten fingers and toes! So I guess I must have, and still do a few things "safely" As long as April feels comfortable working with her tools and setups, I say: YOU GO GIRL!!

Same sentiment here, on using the pocket holes. I've had a Kreg Jig sitting brand new in the box for a couple years now, and every time I see you do a project with so MANY pockets holes, I get closer to pulling mine out, just do get the practice and become proficient in using it. If my two-year-old twin and seven-year-old nieces didn't already have a custom-built, walk-in closet that's outfitted with the cubbies like in your build, I'd build them this one, LOL! And an entire mirrored wall already. All their dress up stuff hangs just like in your station. But, I have an idea for revamping your design into a learning station, instead. One side could be a magnet board for alphabets & numbers, one side a chalkboard, and the back side could be an art station. Put the dowel rod up and a roll of craft paper for drawing with crayons and water colors, perhaps? Use the cubbies for supply storage, etc. Thanks, again for a great tutorial!

I love watching this channel great work keep the videos coming! Why not use dado joinery instead of pocket holes for this cabinet?
@AprilWilkerson10 жыл бұрын
Thanks. : ) I like using pocket holes because they are quick, easy, and strong, but sometimes I use them just because I'm on youtube and I know they are appealing to my audience See if I were not doing this project on camera, then in cases like this dress up station where so many pockets are visible, I would have used dados just so I wouldn't have had to fill in all the holes. However, I'm trying to inspire people who have never used tools to give building things a try and people find pocket holes less intimidating than changing out blades and doing dados.

Great Idea, Nice project. 2 Thumbs up for creativity. Now, question is why have so many people doing woodworking today neglect to do rabbets and dado's and have opted to do more and more pocket hole joints. Just my opinion, but I think it is taking away from the craftsmanship that was at one time something to take pride in. Don't get me wrong, pocket holes in certain places are great, like when doing facework on cabinets and such. Hope I don't hurt your feelings here, but in this case it just looks to be the "lazy man's way" of getting the job done quickly.
@fredlafnear487410 жыл бұрын
Rabbits and dada's are fine if your doing an "Heirloom" piece and have the tools/skills to do them..This is for a child that probably would not appreciate the craftsmanship...And April has been doin this for less then a year and is better then any person i know at woodworking besides me :)
@jeffharmed161610 жыл бұрын
Progress means finding better, quicker, cheaper ways of doing things. By definition that means some skills must be lost, like card punchers, clock makers and rabbit-makers.
@AprilWilkerson10 жыл бұрын
Allen Perry : ) Oh no you didn't hurt my feelings. I know pocket holes are not looked at as great craftsmanship, but I am aiming to get regular joes who don't have a lot of experience to try their hand at making things and pocket holes are very appealing to newbies. They are less intimidating than switching out table saw blades to cut dadoes. If I were not on KZbin and was just doing this project on my own, then I would have done dados just so I wouldn't have had all those pockets to hid.
@obxallen10 жыл бұрын
April Wilkerson I'm glad you are on KZbin doing your videos and wish there were more like you as well. I just find it far easier to change a blade or use a router and get far better results that are more appealing to the eye than to do the :"simple solution" that makes you have to do extra steps to "hide" them. Just my opinion. Keep those videos coming and I promise to keep my mouth shut next time if you should use pocket holes again.
@AprilWilkerson10 жыл бұрын
I'm with ya Allen. I find it easier to change a blade as well, but for a newbie who isn't as use to tools and building things it isn't. The idea of filling in holes is the easier route. I know you aren't being mean so I don't mind hearing your opinion ; )
