Pond looks sweet, Plant some Millet in there and you'll be smashing them. Also that drain system is actually Genius. I've been trying to plan out a duck pond/marsh build and trying to figure out how to build a drainable dam and I was clearly way overthinking it. That's incredibly smart.

For sure! Yeah the water control system has worked very well and I owe the engineering to my dad. I was over thinking it like you and he came up with the simplest solution lol.

@@colbywalkoviak Nice. I've been looking into buying some of our neighbors land that is next to the creek and using a water pump so I won't be worried about waiting for rain.

This is next to a creek as well but to legally pump from it you have to obtain a permit from your area “watermaster”. It’s a process and for small hole like mine, I didn’t want to mess with it. If you have the right location, 1 good rain will get you going.

Yes I actually posted a second video when I planted it. I’m doing a follow up soon to show what’s growing in a 3rd video

I'm looking at building a pond and have it for hunting and fishing....was gonna go about 3 acres and around 1/2-3/4 acres flooded timber... your video just helped quite a bit... the one question I have is about the dam. When you redid it with the water control pipe, how much dirt did you put on top of the plastic? How long did it take to erode? Would you still use the plastic, or put in a more permanent culvert to protect the pvc and hard pack the dirt around it?

That would be an excellent size and show be jam up with the timber. At the dam, the location of the drain pipe is placed in the lowest point of the impoundment. The dam itself is probably 8-10” lower than the rest of the damn to that water will overflow at this location when the impoundment if full. The tarp we are using at the overflow area is the cheaper alternative to pouring a concrete overflow. It’s just a heavy duty tarp and has worked fine. Only issue is I really need some bull rock on the backside because in big rains where water is flowing fast over the tarp, it swirls on the backside and can eat the dam away from the backside going under the tarp. We buried the tarp edges with 8”-10” of dirt to match the height of the rest of dam. On the pipe, I used 4” sewer pipe in the actual dam and the corrugated flex that runs into the impoundment. That is the absolute cheapest and most effective route. If I were to do it again, I probably would spend the money to go with 6” pipe, and instead of the flex pipe on the end, I would have a 90 on the end of pipe inside the impoundment and then have a removable piece on the 90 that would maintain the water lever I desire. Right now the flex pipe has worked well. I’ve learned where to set it during season and if the get a big rain to make the water rise, it will automatically start draining once it starts to exceed the height I have the flex pipe set at. I never have to worry about maintain the water depth like that. Hope it all makes sense

What type dirt did you use for the dam? Is that just topsoil graded from the middle and just packed really well? Looks like it’s holding water very well.
@colbywalkoviak
@colbywalkoviak 3 жыл бұрын
That’s correct. It’s dirt pulled from the middle when digging it out. I got lucky at it does hold very well

Hey Colby. Why didn't you just run the corrugated pipe all the way through the dam and not even fuss with the PVC pipe? Just curious if you think that would work or it might pose a problem.
@colbywalkoviak
@colbywalkoviak 2 жыл бұрын
That smaller one is not strong enough to withstand the weight of the dirt on top of it. It collapses too easily. The larger diameter ones made for culverts could be used, otherwise need to stick to pvc.

@@colbywalkoviak Thanks Colby. I'm going to try this design on a couple of new duck holes I am constructing this summer. Is there anything you would do different? My place has a really awful beaver problem. Thanks

@@brucegonyea792 if the funds are available I’d recommend a 6” or 8” drain setup. Mine is a 4” and I put screens on both ends to prevent a blockage inside the pipe. Overall it has worked very well for me maintaining water level and I have no more than $100 invested. Any of my next ponds will have this same design just possibly larger diameter pipe
