We built one ourselves using your brilliant design. We will be using ours for leaves and branches and it is 6 feet wide by 10 feet long. We used square tubing instead of the pipe and used a bigger winch with a double pulley for slower up and down. I wired the power and controller to the quad that we are using so we don't have to get off the quad to unload. Thank you so much for this!!!!!

This is an awesome trailer, your own design and your labor to build it. Great job Kris. I find your channel straight forward, real, and interesting. Thank you for showing us the many skills you have developed over the years and thank you for keeping me entertained.

Man just came up with this idea too. Only difference is I will run the cable up to the front of the trailer around a few pulleys and also use it to drag items onto the trailer by disconnecting it from the lift mech. Good to see it will work!

Great idea! I'd be concerned about the strength of the cable myself. I know the 1/8" cable on those winches do not support what they're rated at. Like you stated, I'd stay back when dumping. If that cable breaks, it's going to come down in a hurry!!

Very cool lift mechanism. Thank you for sharing the idea. I've catalogued it in the 'ol cranium. I think if I go that direction however, I'll use an electric driven screw scissor jack, as I feel it would have a much safer failure mode.

Really really cool concept and an excellent excecution. There's one thing I think would be beneficial. You really need some kind of safety catch to take the strain off the cable and to catch if it snaps.. With the ingenuity, you've shown here I have no doubt that you will come up with a solution. I would like to see some kind of ratcheting system so that the bed is supported the whole way up. Nice!!
@maingun07
@maingun07 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting design. I've got one problem with the setup that it seems other commenters have not covered. A scissor jack lifts straight up. But the point where your jack contacts the underside of the bed does not. As the bed rises, the contact point is also moving to the rear. This may bind the jack and, more importantly, put stress on the top and bottom weld joints. As a mod to your existing setup, I would find a way to weld a base connecting the two lower hinges together. Then weld a hing to your new jack base and the frame member. This would allow the jack to pivot with the backward swing of the bed and maintain load alignment from the head of the jack straight through the base. Otherwise, great build! Gives me some ideas on a couple of smaller projects I have around here.
@ouimetco
@ouimetco 3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. The pivot points at the bottom of the scissors pivot so the entire scissor can more forward and back albeit not a great amount but sufficient for the arc of the bed. Check the video at 3:06. Cheers

Assuming that equal weight will be maintained where the cable meets each scissor, each scissor will operate at a slightly different speed. The forward one will straighten slightly more than the rear one when raised.

Absolutely brilliant idea and so simple. I'd use a bigger pulley or multiple pulleys with multiple cables. I imagine lifting a ton with that one cable and pulley could be a bit stressful on that current cable and pulley. But hey, solid pat on the back, credit where credit is due. That just earned a beer at the pub !

Very cool build. Just this week I demolished an old hunting trailer that’s been sitting since 1989. The useable box frame is 14’ 7” X 7’ 4”. I plan on adding another axle and building a dump bed. I like your idea but I plan on using mine for 3 tons of gravel hauling so I will need to go with a hydraulic set up unless I can find a manual set up that will lift the weight.

I dumped my diy 1/2 yard cement mixer in a simliar way, however I did not use a scissor, I just used a single arm and pulled it back with a hand winch at the bottom of it, so it swung down and rolled on the ground lifting the cement. It only worked once there is some leverage on the arm, so it had to be designed to give it that which limited a bit the rise. Nice job on your design.

Nice engineering. I'd reinforce all the welds when you get time. Some 45 degree cuts on the cross member supports might help too by adding more weldable surface. As money and time permit, I'd look to replace the wood floor and front wall with steel at a future minimum, and not worry about the wood sides since they'll work fine for most jobs.

Really all depends on the purpose of your trailer. If all you need is the ability to load and dump leaves, then this is great - maybe even over built since your loads are light. Obviously if you intended on using it for loads of rock, my guess is that it is not suitable as it would likely over strain the capacity of the light wench and light duty cable. If you are conscious of the limits of your design and stay within your purpose of the trailer you'll be fine. You started with a light duty trailer frame so obviously your not intending on loading a skid steer into it or hauling more heavy loads. If you had started with a double axle equipment trailer that has a high load capacity - I'm confident this would not have been your solution for a tip mechanism. For what your doing - looks like a great solution. My guess is your cable is rated as good as the light wench your using so you'll likely not be able to lift a load outside the capacity of the cable strength and snap a cable (unless at some point you are dealing with a damaged or worn cable). Your danger point for this design is lifting the trailer empty and rolling on a heavier load than the capacity of the wench to safely lower. Trying to dump a heavy load - the wench should simply refuse to lift it and nothing bad should happen so long as the cable and your lift points are stronger than the wench. All that can change over time as aging and wear occur so keep an eye on things to make sure welds don't crack, metal doesn't rust, cables don't fray etc. or really bad things can happen even with light loads.

Good design but you need horizontal support between front and rear lower pivot arms. It also looks like you need some angle bracing as the bed appears to twist. Next time put the lift arms further apart. Beware those fumes when welding on galvanized material. A great trailer for LIGHT loads.

Zinc Fumes -- A Safety Hazard? When zinc vapor mixes with the oxygen in the air, it reacts instantly to become zinc oxide. This is the same white powder that you see on some noses at the beach and the slopes. Zinc oxide is non-toxic and non carcinogenic. Extensive research1 into the effects of zinc oxide fumes has been done, and although breathing those fumes will cause welders to think that they have the flu in a bad way, there are no long-term health effects. Zinc oxide that is inhaled is simply absorbed and eliminated by the body without complications or chronic effects. Current research2 on zinc oxide fumes is concentrated in establishing the mechanism by which zinc oxide causes "metal fume fever," how its effects are self-limiting and why zinc oxide fume effects ameliorate after the first day of exposure even though the welder may continue to be exposed to zinc during subsequent days ("Monday-morning fever"). Other research3 is being done using zinc oxide fumes together with various drugs which results in a synergetic effect for treatment of cancer and AIDS. Another area of research is use of zinc compounds as the active ingredients in throat lozengers that are recognized as significantly effective in reducing the duration and intensity of the common cold.

I've been watching quite a few videos on homemade dump trailers because I would like to build one but on a smaller scale, like garden tractor size, somewhere in the range of about 5' X 6' or somewhere along those lines and I'd like use a small hydraulic cylinder but damn, a 12V hydraulic pump and reservoir runs over $200 alone and I saw an electric linear actuator(which looks similar to a hydraulic cylinder) on eBay for $65 but it was only rated to lift 165 lbs. I want something rated to lift at least 300 lbs so I'm still searching. I like the scissor lift idea you came up with and I'm not an engineer or pro fabricator by any stretch but to me it looks like just too much stress for that winch and cable setup for any kind of weight at least. I was thinking about something along these lines but maybe using a screw type mechanism like a foctory automotive screw jack but being turned by a strong electric geared down motor. It just seems like it would be safer...
@JasonTaylor1
@JasonTaylor1 3 жыл бұрын
under load that system will likely struggle. Help it out by adding mech advantage by adding pully blocks with multiple pullies. Each set doubles the capacity but requires twice the cable pull. Would work nicely because not a large distance from down to full up.

Actually if you added another piece of pipe about an inch or two between the scissor action and cut a small groove for the cable to ride in you could eliminate the need for pullies altogether. hell you could put a zerk in it for greasing and even cut two grooves so you could compound the cable 3-4 times it will be good for winch life...

You know, with swing-out stabilizing out-riggers, that would give you a fairly safe place to stand and paint or change high night light bulbs say 20' off the ground...? Have to have a leveler for inclined yards. You could make a ton of $$$ with an item like that! I like your design. I appreciate you & your work and making this video! I don't hate it. My first concern would be the wear on the 3/16" cable. If you were to use a larger sheave say 4" diameter it puts less strain on the stranded wire. Also if you added another snatch block to compound the cable it would also increase lift capacity and lower the load on the cable while only decreasing the speed. It is worth sacrificing the speed for safety. You should be able to lift nearly a ton, whereas now it is a matter of time before cable fails and load crashes back down...

I like it! Been thinking of doing something with no hydraulics like this. Thanks for the great idea!

I would have used bigger pins and cable as you should always oversized anything lifting that much weight. I have a the same idea for a crane loader.

Liking this one...wonder how this could be modified with a hydraulic ram?

I love it. It’s genius. How has it held up after 5 years of use?

Love your design, curious about side to side stability? I just bought a 2K pound boat winch, I plan to use more pulleys to increase power.

No issues, used triple pulleys and a 3k winch

I think you should add a roller bearing guide to where the cable drags at the front of your scissor so your cable doesn't wear and evenually break. How much can you lift with it?
