Check into a security strike plate. It is affordable, easy to install, and definitely will help keep the door shut when an intruder goes at the bolt (especially on an out-swing door).
@RJ_Cormac3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend SPAX PowerLags structural wood screws, and PL Premium construction adhesive to lock that steel to the door jamb, king stud, and jack stud all together. SPAX PowerLag screws have a wider head that won't need a washer, and a smaller head profile. They could be hidden under drywall and trim-work, with minor clearancing adjustments under the drywall or trim. But will require gluing that edge, as drywall screws and finish nails would never penetrate to the studs now. 🤔🤷🏻♂️😂
@adamwest12752 жыл бұрын
One reasonable solution would be to extend the security plate another 6" or so up and down, mark your studs top and bottom, provide some 1/2" holes with precise measuring (every 4" or so) for your dry wall screw to pass through the metal security jamb security plate. No gluing the edge required ;)

How would I do this with an entrance door that has existing trim? Like a front door? I was thinking to remove the trim, make a plate like you did. Guess I need to chisel the wood to make it flush so the trim will lay flat when reinstalled?
@Jasonoid2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing that plan would work just fine. Maybe you could sand it and paint it. They also have products you can purchase to reinforce your entry door so they are much stronger as well.

Did you say the steel plate was 3 inches thick?
@jeffreywall48182 ай бұрын
The steel plate should have been 24” long if not the full 36” and since you were screwing into the 3.5” width of the 2.4 studs you should have used 3.5” lag screws [4” lags cut down] or 3” screws minimum. More bite = more strength. Construction adhesive between the steel and particle board and between the partivle board and doorjam & wall would also help - the bonding effect is a force multiplier. Over kill never fails.
@ibisman15933 жыл бұрын
Could you explain how the steel plate works please.

Reinforces the door frame from being kicked in. Normally the wood door frame is weak where the door knob meets the frame.

@@Jasonoid if I was building new, I'd use a router to remove 1/4in of wood and install a 6ft section of 3in angle iron to wrap around the door jamb and lock the door jamb, king stud & jack stud all together with steel. But then the door would be a serious weak point, so how much work is it worth unless I keep going. I already have hurricane windows that can't be easily breached. I've seen special hurricane/security door's that have 3 deadbolts, one opposite each hinge. That would be serious security, Android people would start asking if you sell drugs! 😳 Why else do people do extreme security countermeasures? 🤔😒🙄 Sometimes too much security brings out extra attention; "must be something really worth the effort inside!" 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😥 I used to run a small business, and had UPS, FedEx and other deliveries daily, so I started with 24/7 recorded security cameras and monitored electronic keypad entry. I would get allerts when there was a delivery, daily outbound pick-up, and could monitor everything from my phone anywhere I had service. 10 security cameras to monitor the property, delivery drivers, and my staff. I was at a point I should have moved the business out of my home. 1 basket all the eggs! 🤦🏻♂️

i think you might have drilled the holes a bit too big for your coach bolts(or lag screws as you call them) they went in way too easy and i like to clean the holes out and put liquid nails in the holes before putting the screws in

It would be extremely formidable if you put another plate on the outside, and used carriage bolts and through-bolted it.
@Jasonoid Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't they then know the security plate exists and they could just drill out the bolt heads and punch out the bolts?
@MesoTroniK Жыл бұрын
@@Jasonoid Yes, but that is way more work then just getting in with any other method. Watch the tools, methods, and time it takes trained firefighters to defeat carriage bolts. Even for them, it is more work than busting into your shed using any other method. And doing it would make the strike plate exceptionally strong against the most basic attack. Kicking, battering, prying etc etc.

That's not gonna stop a kick in attack. The jamb will hold, but the weak pine in the door will split and thin metal will bend. The deadbolt latch will be ripped right out of the door. You need a MAG deadbolt reinforcer for the door.

@mikek52064 жыл бұрын
Kind of silly...just get a security strike plate from a big box hardware store for 8 bucks and use long screws through the frame into the studs. I recommend GRKs. You also need to reinforce the lock and hinges, but the strike plate is the most important. Alternatively you can make one w sheet or a mending plate and a step bit for the bolt protrusion. You can bend the plate to make an angle bracket and secure it on the inside like yours is.

If you wanted to do this on a finished wall, you would relieve the studs and door casing enough to clear the bolt heads, then drywall over it and place the door trim. This is way better than the thin metal kits I have seen for sale for $75.00.
