I lovved my Outlander Phev especially being able to turn the heating on with the app so it was warm before i got in. Also in summer setting the AC to cool 20 mins before work finished. Felt very smug 😊

very cool... no pun intended! hopefully one day we can get past our major mechanical stuff and be on to adding heat!

Thanks Ali, have most of those bits to hand and have been looking for a little project to ease my way into CAN technology so may well attempt to duplicate your setup. Only problem is I live a few km s of the Tropic of Capricorn in Australia and have more need of an air conditioner!

Thanks for this... sooner or later this will be a "hot topic" in every build.

Thanks Charles. It's now in the car and still working well so I'm very pleased with it.

Good to hear mate, not good not having any heat during the winter.... Does not matter, what car you have.

super video and a fantastic bench setup

Thanks mate, I was lucky to be able to salvage 50 or more 12V batteries from old UPS's that were being scrapped. Most of them are sitting in a shed being topped up by a solar panel. I then use them to recharge my ebike from an ancient 12V inverter. I used the same setup to test the inverter and motor 3 years ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX7EiXmAedyAjKs

@@alibro7512 That's great! I was thinking all those little batteries would have otherwise been quite a large investment for a bench setup.

fantastic video, off topic sorry,, did you buy the outlander heater from ebay ( I'm in the UK ) if so can i ask how much it cost ?? I suspect my heater is faulty, heat from engine is perfect, heat from electric doesn't work blows cold even after 30 minutes, the heater ( under passenger seat ) stays stone cold as does the 2 pipes in / out, ( if anyone here understands the outlander phev ive already checked and cleaned the filters and have had the 4 way valve replaced ,as heat works from the engine its not a blocked matrix or failed pump I can hear the coolant running around the system , i was going to attempt to swap it myself but im not a mechanic and the costs involved in a garage is more than my car is worth ( 8yr old phev ) , it looks simple on your bench, is it simple to unplug the cables ? just bolted in ? sorry for the questions but ive had no heat in the winter for 2 yrs and we just force the engine on in the cold. the dash reports its using KW's and if i turn down the temp the KW drops. any help appreciated.

oh p.s. i was told this is a ptc heater im not fully understanding how but as the heater warms up the resistance in the elements increases dropping the the KW usage like a self operating variable stat ?? but you seem to be controlling it yourself ?

Hi, yes I bought it off ebay but I think it came from Poland and it wasn't too expensive, around £170. I think there are several versions so maybe you need to confirm yours before ordering anything. Before you go near it be aware it has up to 380V at the HV connection when the car is turned on so be careful. If your not able to diagnose it yourself it might be worth taking the car to an auto electrician to confirm it isn't something simple before throwing parts at it.

When it reaches the target temperature, does arduino cutt the current completely or tries to adjust it slowly?

I've been running it for a few days now and it seems to cut the current to around half when the temp is 10C below target. This means If it is very cold I need to set the target higher to between 62C and 65C to maintain a comfortable 55C actual. In milder weather I can have it set to 55C and it will maintain that. 55C actual seems to give a comfortable amount of warm air but I can turn it up or down easily as required. Of course this can all be adjusted in the Arduino sketch but so far I am very happy with it.
You're wasting money on heating! Use your A/C!
