As a welder fabricator, I'd love to see a follow up on how the exhaust holds up over time, instead of back purging too you can use solar flux next time for when you don't want to use the extra argon, the welds become more brittle when you don't back purge too it's not just about the aesthetic and its tendency for rusting quicker, it's worth doing at least a backing plate or something, love what you guys are doing! Killing it for how fresh you guys are, keep at it :)

Should’ve mentioned that cleaning your parts with brake parts cleaner can be extremely dangerous. If your brake cleaner contains tetrachloroethylene, you can expose yourself to an extremely poisonous gas when welding. A lot of the “50 state” brake parts cleaner no longer contains this chemical, they use acetone instead. But always check, and it’s honestly safer to use acetone by itself.
@rodanone4895

one hundred and ten percent!!! acetone. and be careful with the acetone. some have oils and grease remnants emulsified when you buy it. apparently there is reagent grade acetone where this ingredient is controlled. but i can't find it. i start with acetone. then scrub again with a dry cloth. the danger them becomes lint... shop vac. then weld. tom eager from MIT has an amazing series on KZbin for welding metallurgy, fusion welding etc .. but, the algorithm is unlikely to recommend it. he talks often of welding cleanliness even with low carbon steel.

@rodanone4895

@@FleetTech97 phosgene i believe can be created. but chlorine gas by itself also happens and will cause immediate acid products straight on the lung walls. mustard gas has sulfer, where the yellow comes from, and sulfer occurs in steel so it is probably also a byproduct. keep chlorine away for so so many reasons. it corrodes stainless.... as you say: no bueno. word.

@@CandidKiller but the insides of the pipe will crystallise and will not have proper fusion with out purge on stainless and with heat and vibration the join is the weak point so it normally cracks (edit .. when welding stainless I'm talking aluminium there is no need to purge )
@fatpad00
@fatpad00 3 жыл бұрын

@@nickthelebo Did not know about the necessary back purge for stainless, glad you informed me. I’ve only been professionally welding for almost 3 years and started with mig then went to tig and do aluminum now at work and we do a little mild steel so nothing we do requires back purge
@CandidKiller
@CandidKiller 3 жыл бұрын
@@fatpad00 Argon in short is what you use to weld, it’s a gas, and it allows for the weld to lay cleanly, without argon it’s a bubbly mess and you’ll never get a weld down, we use 75% argon and 25% helium for aluminum at work but all metals can use 100% argon, don’t quote me, but like steel can’t have the helium, they make another mixture for that. First off, if that was your first time welding…amazing job! Second, check out stainless autogenous pulse tig, it has totally changed how I weld stainless exhaust. I understand this is a beater but it was my understanding that you shouldn’t stiff weld the exhaust to the chassis as the vibrations will cause some points of it to crack (hopefully not near the headers. The hanger needs bushings. Also, what a lovely head of hair.

It's counterintuitive but a steeper angle on your electrode's tip will give you a wider arc. An electrode ground flat will create an almost laser like arc.

Very underrated comment. To a newer welder, they may not notice. But if you do the different grinds back to back, you can really see the difference. It’s why you want a large angle (60* point) for thin metal, vs a shallow angle (15* point) for thicker metals. The large angle allows you to have a more focused arc, where the heat affected zone isn’t trying to melt a larger area of the metal.

@@KC-lg8qf Well, mandrel bent is supposed to be better than crimp bent, or whatever it is called. And bigger tubes are supposed to be better as are more free flowing mufflers which tend to be noisier. By better, I mean a tiny percentage better at wide open throttle at 5000 plus rpm. OK, so it is 1978, I have a 72 Road Runner GTX 440 with true dual exhaust. Some turkey had his mom's 66 Coronet sedan. With a wheezy 318. He puts on glass packs, ladder bars, and bunch of free decals from the hot rod store. He is "compensating", as we would call it now. That is all loud mufflers are to me. "Compensating."

Some advice for the future. Take the entire length of tubing, measure to the first bend, cut your 4°, weld it back together, measure to the next spot and repeat. Then at each bend, you only Weld one seam rather then 3.

Thank fudge someone actually said this! This is how we do it at work. It's proabably 70% faster, your putting less heat heat into the material, your not making multiple cuts so there's less room for error. Also why have it on foot pedal why not just have an auto push button start on the torch? You're reducing variables which makes the job cleaner again.

I’m a welding instructor at one of the oldest welding schools in the country. Give me a week in your shop and I’ll have all of you welding like champs. 😂 the welds are pretty good, all an exhaust does is move air anyway. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 also, I like the mini pie cuts to bend the exhaust. Stainless tech tip...tac it, continue this way. Then make a controlled leak of argon inside the pipe... Stainless makes crystals. Then can break. So sealing one end with argon supply to then making a very small leak on the otherside will did the pipe, stop crystals. And maybe save your turbo if your fabbing the induction.... Behind the downpipe it's not as critical, but it's good practice
