I just made a 6ft cornice using your formula! It is gorgeous and it weighs 3 lbs! I love it. I'm in a rental and it is great, no fuss and cheap. One thing you should point out is you have to use a light cotton fabric, otherwise it's too heavy. Thank you

Sara, I cannot thank you enough for this post. I need to do a cornice board across my bathtub because unfortunately when the owners of the apartment put in the shower rod they put it in low so the distance between that rod holding the shower curtain and the actual ceiling is way too large. The only way to fix it is to add a cornice board and then put tension rods behind it with your valance and your curtains hanging down. That would make the whole thing balance out. I love what you did and it occurred to me that it was easily adaptable because you could basically create it the same way except instead for putting your command hooks on the end where it snugs the wall instead of the back. Now you would have to make another support piece at the top so that the command thing can go into the ceiling but it is so absolutely light that I don’t believe it would be an issue. My other thing is that I bought really good black core foam core board that looks awesome and like wood and I’m going to trim it out so I don’t even have to actually cover mine. Anyway I wanted to tell you how grateful I am because I went out looking and I found your video and it is such a straightforward design, it could be used in a multitude of ways. So thank you so much for putting this up and I’m sorry this is so long! Have a great day!

I would measure for the placement of the cornice on the wall. If you get it wrong the first time, you can't reattach the cornice. If making a longer cornice, I would double the thickness of the foam core board for two reasons. 1. to give the cornice the stiffness it would need to span a long distance. 2. Since the longer length requires a way to strengthen the two pieces used to extend the length, having another two pieces on the back would be convenient. Just be sure the joints don't fall in the same spot. I would also double up the side pieces too.

Wish someone would have replied to your query. I'm wondering the same thing. I guess I would reinforce with a piece of the foam core board across the middle seam and tape securely with white duct tape.

you can get huge foam boards at hobby lobby. the largest size they have is 40"x60". If you need it wider you can piece it together with duct tape and reinforce the connection with another piece of foam board on the inside. make sure there's enough width of your reinforcement piece so that it provides enough support and keeps the connection rigid.

@SarahVanderkooy
@SarahVanderkooy 4 жыл бұрын
Extra hot glue always helps! The cornices shown at the beginning and end of this video, the colorful ones, are 2 pieces of foam board duct taped together. Those windows are a little bit bigger. They have held up really well and you can't tell they are pieced together.

what if you want to do a large window, like above a slding glass door? what do you do then with a larger window? foam board doesn't come that large, yes? suggestions?
@SarahVanderkooy
@SarahVanderkooy 6 ай бұрын
Correct it doesn't come that long. You would need to attach a few pieces together. I actually did that with this one, I just used duct tape to attach them before adding fabric. But you should also add a brace or 2 in the middle. Just use an extra piece of foam between the cornice and the wall to help it stay in place.

Great video! How do you make for a larger window over the 28” foam board?
@SarahVanderkooy
@SarahVanderkooy 3 жыл бұрын
You can attach multiple pieces of foam board together with tape. If the window is large you should add a support in the middle, another piece of foam board that attaches to the wall to keep it from bending in the middle.

How would you attach more than one board if you need longer than 28 inches?
@SarahVanderkooy

You would need a brace in the middle. Try creating one with a piece of foam board attached to the back middle that can attach to the wall. This should support a longer board.

Hi this looks EXACTLY what I need for my Bedroom. Can I ask two questions please? One is how do I extend and fix as I need a lot wider fitting. The next ? Is will it work encorporating 3 separate Fabrics? One colour centre and the other on the two from centre block to outer ends? Would you use a glue gun to add these then maybe some form of trim to hide the joins? Can the trim be added with the glue gun also? Sorry for all the questions but I've worked really hard on the Bedroom Makeover. One is for the window the other for over the bed. Many Thanks 😊
@SarahVanderkooy
@SarahVanderkooy Жыл бұрын
Here's my tips. You can make this pretty big, you just have to join the foam together in the middle, I used duct tape. But a brace of some sort on the back is a good idea. A piece that will hold it against the wall in the middle so it doesn't fall. Consider using a piece of foam to attach to the cornice and the wall in the middle. And I would definitely use a glue gun to attach the trim. Good luck with your projects!

It looks like your walls are textured or “orange peel”. If so, did the valance stay up over time, with just command strips? Thanks for the great tutorial!
@SarahVanderkooy
@SarahVanderkooy Жыл бұрын
Yes, my walls have a lot of texture. The command strips stick really well for this purpose. In general I have an issue if I try to use those strips with too much weight, but these valances are so light it works.
@larinaadler2450
@larinaadler2450 Жыл бұрын
Apply rubbing alcohol to the wall before using a Command strip! It works wonders, and is safe to do on freshly painted walls and helps adhere to textured walls. Our entire house is decorated thanks to Command strips, even heavy art.
