These will no prevent you from contracting a virus. N95 masks should be used whenever possible. But these say they will filter small particles. If you are making them for personal use, I think these filters would be great, but if you are making them for hospitals, check with them before you put any filters in the pockets!
Make sure to check with your local hospital for guidelines on what kind of masks they need and if they are accepting donations.
Please note, I am making no claims as to the effectiveness of these masks. These masks will not prevent you from catching a respiratory illness. For up to date info and guidelines, look at the CDC website www.cdc.gov/co....

UPDATE 4/4 I am being told that HEPA filters contain fiber glass and you shouldn’t put them in masks. Do your own research on that.
*notes:
1)The pocket hole can be made larger to fit a regular surgical mask inside.

After reading most of these comments, I want to say. She did a great job on the video, that is the majority. Some of you don’t like the music, but she turnsvdown the music when she talks so that is just a personal preference, and you didn’t make the video. Several people said make one with two different color fabrics. What makes this easy for so many beginners out there is that you only use one piece of fabric. I’m not having any problem telling which side is the front and back by the way the elastic sits in the mask. If you have a problem make mark on the inside with a permanent marker in a corner or something on the inside part of the mask. It is great when people chime and share where and what they find to use as filters and if they can used or not. This person did a wonderful job and I just fell bad for those negative comments. Let’s be kind people.

I AGREE!!! And i'd add - different color fabrics are kind of irrelevant in this pattern - put the filter pocket on the inside. Done deal.

For those of you reading these comments, I did hear from a medical personal with this request: “Guys if you’re making face masks at home (thanks you’re awesome) make one side a different color so we can easily and quickly tell which side was touching our face and which side was facing the sick person. Don’t want to put it on backwards and slap germs directly on our face.” Thanks for this! My daughter has started to make masks for a local nursing home that needs a bunch of them for the residents.

Can’t tell you how happy I was to have found this video. I’ve made several masks but it’s been awhile and I need to make more. Unfortunately the mask tutorials have been dreadful - either they weren’t in English and that meant the sound (NOT music) in the background was way too jarring and distracting. Some that were in English didn’t list the measurements so you had watch the video too many times. ETC!!! Then I saw YOUR video and all was right with the world! Thank you so much. Really appreciate it.

Yes! The nose wire is super essential! I read an article this weekend that did an experiment on tons of materials To use as filters. Vacuum bags did not do well because they are hard to breathe through, as are coffee filters. The Highest ranked materials oddly were paper towels, shop towels, and 180+ thread count cotton bed sheets. I’m going to experiment by sewing the cotton sheet between the Mask material to see how that works because then you don’t have to replace the filter every time. I was also going to experiment with T-shirt yarn for ear loops. I think that would be easy to adjust the tightness

To add to my last post, when you add an exterior pocket to put the metal wire or pipe cleaner, the pocket of course will be interior at top of mask with all pleats facing down. You will then remember which is interior as not to mix it up. I also recommend a thick one sided usable web. You iron it to interior of front mask, the shiny side goes against fabric, this then works as best as possible as a filter, if not keep the small area you left open and change out paper towels, after daily cleaning. Remember the fabric should be 100 % cotton and if you hold it up to light you shouldn’t see through it. By the way, I enjoyed the music, I felt it was soothing as was your voice. Again, thanks for your video.

Thank you for your video! I just wanted to pass to everybody along something I just figured out. I decided to use a fitted king size bed sheet for fabric, since I hated it (fit my bed weird) and it was sitting there ready to donate, but I didn't know what to do with it. So I started cutting it up, and guess what, there is fabric-cased elastic around all of the edges! Ha ha! I cut it all off, and I'm going to use it for the masks. So if you have any sheets that you are tired of, use all of the parts!

This is an excellent tutorial. May I suggest a wider opening for the filter. It is very important not to “fiddle” with the mask too much when replacing the filter. Conversely a fabric mask can be worn and removed and replaced with another clean mask and filter. Change filters and wash masks daily. Why do I suggest this- once on the face the outside of the mask is “contaminated” never touch the mask once on the face. When replacing a filter you should not touch the front of the mask. This is why you need a wider opening to replace filters. Filter material should be made from polypropylene non woven fabric. Some diaper wipes are made from this material . Filters should be trashed after removal. I hope this information is helpful Pat Hoffheiser RN

I used a fusable interfacing between the two layers of cotton. It's a thin variety - just iron it to the back of one of the two pieces and then do everything as you normally would. Provides a nice stability to the mask at the same time filtering out a lot of stuff that might want to penetrate your mask. Hope someone finds this useful!

T-shirt fabric makes a great substitute for elastic since it has the same amount of stretch. Just cut strips ALONG THE WIDTH that are at least 1/2" wide. Stretch both ends, and both sides will curl to the middle. Now you can use it for the ear straps.

From a healthcare worker, thank you! Do you find the pipe cleaner rusts when you wash it or do you remove it before washing? (Its actually a heavy duty twist tie in real masks - i took one out of one of my used masks to see!) I personally prefer ties rather than ear loops but it's really easy to swap on your pattern! Old shoe laces or ribbons could even work for this if people can't find anything else, and I feel tires provide a tighter "seal" After watching many videos, yours is the easiest/fastest to follow! PLEASE research the use of HEPA filters for face masks before using them. It is my understanding that HEPA filters contain fiberglass ... not something we want anyone breathing in through a face mask. I've read that N95 masks have a filter made from polypropylene non-woven fabric (among other approved materials). There are also fabric vacuum cleaner bags that are not HEPA and have been used for the masks - DIY videos show them. Please, do research.

I read that they found the blue shop towels filter 93% of the .3 micron sized particles. Something about how they're woven makes them breathable, but the most effective thing to use for homemade mask filers. I hope this helps people make masks at home and stay safe! As a side note, you can get jewelry wire in different gauges or softness that you can use in place of a pipe cleaner or plastic twist tie. They'll be heat resistant and washable - and pliable enough to adjust to the nose comfortably.

For anyone wondering about the vacuum bags as filters, they are not safe to use because they often have fiberglass fibers woven into them, which can eventually cause pulmonary fibrosis if inhaled. Also, the ones that do not contain fiberglass contain polyurethane (plastic) in the fabric, which you also don't want to be inhaling. Using non-woven sew-in (not fusible) interfacing for extra protection is a-okay and also using the qualitative filter paper is a great replaceable filter. here is the link to it: www.usalab.com/usa-lab-qualitative-filter-paper-medium-30-50um-micron-various-sizes/?action=select&sku=QUAL-M-5CM

I am going to make mine with interfacing. I have it on hand and seems like it would be just as good as anything heppa (hepa?) due to the very tight weave. My family has requested these from me so I wouldn't want anything but the best of what I have so I do believe interfacing will be good.

@mariaholman
@mariaholman 4 жыл бұрын
@@heglenn Interfacing is a stiff fabric used to help collars and jacket fronts keep their their. They are talking about the non-woven type. If you do use it, get the heavy duty weight, and the lighter ones probably wouldn't do much.
@rwind656
@rwind656 4 жыл бұрын
@@@heglenn interfacing is a term used for material lining the inside. It's used to stiffen items or reinforce an area or make it more opaque -- to "face" it --inside. The collar or placket of your cotton shirt might be all floppy and wrinkled if it didn't have a layer of interfacing of some type. Used to be all interfacing was woven and natural but now they've got it made of other stuff. Some have adhesive spray on the back so that you can iron instead of sew it on. And interfacing in this mask would make it stiffer perhaps depending on the interfacing you add inside. Help it keep it shape. But I have been reading about masks and materials and whether it's both breathable and whether it would actually filter one of these microscopic particles of viruses or bacteria would have to be tested. I mean, you could make a surgical style mask like this out of plastic and it wouldn't pass any particles through the front, but it also wouldn't be breathable. Might as well wear a face shield in that case, both of them would let the air in on the sides. I wondered about using a microfiber type cloth inside, but it turns out what is inside surgical masks and the N 95 masks materials is some type of electrically ionized layer that traps microscopic particles because of the electrical charge, not because the fiber is so tightly woven that it can't pass through. At least that is my understanding.
@SparkyPeaches
@SparkyPeaches 4 жыл бұрын
Flower Typically interfacing is used as a stabilizer between two other layers of fabric. You can buy very thick/stiff interfacing as well as mid-weight, light-weight, and feather weight. It can be fusible (thin film of glue, on one side, meant to be ironed down), or sewn in interfacing. The fusible is used frequently because once it is ironed down it won’t slip or move around while being sewn (no pins needed). It is typically a “non woven” material (unless the packaging states otherwise). They do make woven interfacing. I would say the non woven would be a much better choice for masks; more protective than any woven material. 👍❤️ Thanks for asking. Sorry so long.

I made one of these and it’s too big. Either I need to cut it down or pleat more heavily. I think this would probably fit my husbands face perfectly. But maybe size down an inch for women.

Does the pipe cleaner hold up to multiple washes well? I wasn't sure they could be washed, but I'm assuming so since I keep seeing people use them now.

So I didn't make this exact design but I came here looking for solutions... My 1st wash on a VERY similar design turned into a mess. The wire bunched up and it took forever to get it to sit flat again. I did another mask with heat shrink tubing around the pipe cleaner and that made all the difference. it held the shape and allowed me to move it back into place since it shifted to one side. so far that's my best fix. Also I hadn't thought about the rust part but if you shrink up the ends of the tubing and it seals good i imagine that would solve 2 problems at once! (heat shrink tubing is used for wire repairs to seal out moisture and prevent rust/corrosion.)

Excellent tutorial. You covered all the bases. I will start making these tomorrow for my family. I will be using coffee filters and cotton material. I have several bed sheets that I don't use anymore and will double up the layers to make 4 ply. They should wash nicely. Thank you for giving such easy to follow instructions.

Be careful with vacuum and air filters. Be sure they don't have fiberglass because some do and you could end up with lung problems for life. Contact manufacturer if unsure.

@@carpenterfamily6198 I'm not sure....I'll send her a message and let you know as soon as she gets back to me. I've seen several more comments from others as well, but this girl and I have gotten pretty close so we discussed her experience a bit more at length. I'll see if I can find out the vendors and let you guys know! ♥️

Thanks for this video, I have made 5 of these today, I am by no means a professional but doing my little bit, I used ties instead of elastic and made the with the same material using my serger which hasn't been used in many many years. We are all doing our part be it large or small :)
