G'day Peter, its good to see I'm not the only crazy person out there. I used an ER16 150mm for the quill spring loaded and a removable head, everyone said I was nuts for the removable head, my idea behind it was for our club, when someone didn't turn up on a night you could easily remove the head and not upset the stone, and then just replace it with another head, I still think its a great idea and I'm still fighting every over it. Our biggest problem is the index gear and putting numbers on them, this is the part I would like to use a stepper for, all my attempts have had the same problem to heavy on the back, I'm also using a gearbox to get a finer step, I would like to use it as a cheater as well. I'm not asking you to work it out for me. I'm just happy someone else is as crazy as me. Kind regards Ian

The volt meter is a great idea. Is it powered by a 9 volt battery. My faceting machine is similar in several ways. The mast is and lowering mechanism is the same. The head is different. I could easily over cut a angle if I didn't watch the degrees on the protractor. I think rigging up a volt meter would be ideal. I've been faceting for 5 months ( so I'm a newbie). It's been a lifetime dream to finally learn to cut stones. I've made a few vids of stones I've cut. Your doing a wonderful job, and keep up the vids. People like myself need all the help we can get. If possible, can you show how the volt meter wired up from the battery? Or how to make one? Thanks Cliff

I'm building a similar head to yours, did you have the index wheel cut? One I ordered is plastic and making a locking system is not so easy without having play in it.You mentioned a photo copier or printer some where on the net.Thanks for All the vidsRoy

Hi Roy, the index wheel is aluminium and CNC cut and engraved. Here a picture from my blog where you can see the wheel with the engraved index lines: blog.techwork.rocks/content/tn_IMG_0192-JPG.jpg In my case a spring on the faceting arm constantly pulls the index wheel towards the "needle", so no play occures.

Does that contact switch that is connected to the Voltmeter send out a chirp or beep when it touches the contact?

Hi tjrank1, no, it doesn't do a beep. It's actually a good idea. - Actually I'm not sure if for my faceting behaviour a binary beep would be what I find appropriate. For meet point faceting I sometimes have to stop at different voltmeter values.

Yours is a Fine Quality Faceting Machine. Congratulations! My You-Tube is not playing the sound of your presentation so I may have missed your comments about the Volt Meter. I believe you are using the Volt Meter in the Ohmmeter mode. Hi Dave, thanks! I didn't know about the Beale/Wooley Depth of Cut Indicator. Thanks for pointing me to it. Indeed the principle is exactly the same. I took the idea from the book Amateur Gemstone Faceting Vol. 2 by Tom Herbst. (www.facetingbook.com/). But, meanwhile I'm not using any more a simple voltmeter, but connected it to an Arduino, which also controls the angle limit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpOQdoCNlKqWaqc Cheers, Peter

I just got a copy of Tom's book, Vol, 2 and have ordered Vol, 1 because I was so impressed with Vol. 2. Thanks for directing me to it. My only disappointment with Vol. 2 is the tiny footnote on page 222 where Tom misspelled my name. The Beale/Woolley Depth of Cut Indicator is a major turning point in the development of faceting and I am disappointed he did not even mention it. Perhaps I will be pleasantly surprised when Vol. 1 arrives.

Hello! Thank you for your interest. This is a handmade, do-it-yourself lapidary machine that is not for sale, as I only built one piece. Also, it does not cut diamond, but only stones with less hardness than diamond.

Not quite "DIY" not everyone has access to a full machine shop, which would be needed for this project. Caution!!! Don't try this at home! You need a CNC machine like dude said... whatever that is...
