Dude, subscribed 👍 You have such a calm, easy listening voice for tutorials, really enjoyed it. Right up until the point the music kicked back in, which then blew out my eardrums. Also appreciated the 14:00 mark, where the audio died completely, making me fiddle with my headphones until bang: the music kicked back in full volume. So yeah, amazing job, I now need to find a UK leather supplier so I can try this! (Even if myself and next 3 generations of my family have tinnitus ☺️)

My very first leather project was the fantasy bracers from this series. I made both styles from the pattern - one in shiny black with the wings and one in mottled dark brown with the more traditional rounded edges. Boy, did I learn a LOT from that project. Come payday, its time to get this pattern (already have the leather and tools) but I tell myself that if I want to wear this in public I'm gonna need to really workout harder at the gym than I have been. Tandy, Weaver, Springfield, and Maker's Supply all owe you big time for getting me hooked on leather work!

I've seen a lot of tutorials online, this one by far has been one of the more encouraging than most. I like how you showcase and talk about how mistakes can happen. Got my subscribe Could you possibly share what the cost of doing these spaulder pieces go for? leather, tools, buckle, paint, dye and all? And generally how many man hours did it take?
@aurelius-5 жыл бұрын
for me, buying the materials for this project (going in with 0 expertise and 0 supplies) its cost me around 200 USD including the sheet of leather (4 oz cow hide with veg tan, at $40 for the sheet, and two 1.5 inch strips of leather at $7 each) with the cheaper "non professional" tools ive bought whether in kits or loosely picked off hangers. The dye i bought was around 7-8$ for a 4 oz bottle and the sealer i bought was 9. im going to go in to grab tools as i need them, because a mistake i made was buying online without guidance (which ended up giving me tools i might not use, and not necessarily buying ones i actually needed based off of blind assumption) ive started this project today so i cant give you an "hours spent" but as a beginner, it took me an hour and a half to stencil and cut. i can update you as i complete more parts to give you a better feel!
@FlexyStraws5 жыл бұрын
@@aurelius- you are amazing! I look forward to hearing your progress! Its always a lil daunting to just dive right on in not knowing what price tag you have to invest at least I have a point to compare against

Peter Nguyen so its been a few days, but including start to finish (to this point) its taken i think about 15-20 hours? drying time not included. imgur.com/a/N2r4nE5 this album has my progress start to finish (well, the finish being the spaulder sans chest strap, since i havent had a second pair of hands to help measure yet, lol) but it hasnt been difficult, just tedious, and im sure the next project will be a lot easier for me to handle now that ive (sorta) messed around with the tools and materials. the only trouble i had was sizing the rivets, but i just sorta eye-balled it and it seemed to work out fine! there are pictures of the spaulder assembled but not dyed, and its just a test fit before i disassembled, dyed, sealed, and reassembled. using open back screw rivets made it easier for me to do this step, so i really highly recommend the screw-in rivets over the hammered rivets. they also kinda add a lot of character to the weathered/rustic style i went for. the leather sealer i used was a sheen and not satin, so its a bit shinier than i wanted but i still think it looks nice. i hope this helps!

Really makes me wanna sew a costume with leather armor parts... but I always fail any project at the get-the-materials-part, so I suppose it'll just end up as another drawing in my sketchbook - maybe someday one of these sketches will come to actually get crafted. just stumbled in here and found this facinating. When using dye in such a fashion, how "thick" is the paint? Is it possible to say, dilute and simply dip or is that out of the question when it comes to leather? Since it works well for metals and plastics and resin and the like.
