Hey, just a tip for the poly -> Using a roller is a sure way to get bubbles which is probably why you get the feeling you don't necessarily desire. It also may not be as protective because of the bubbles. I'm part of a woodworkers guild, that gives great tips for these types of projects. If you mix your poly 50/50 with mineral spirits, stir and not shake, you can use it as a wipe on poly. Apply thin coats of oil based "gloss" 50/50 with a lint free cloth (this will prevent bubbles and the gloss is used for the first few coats ALWAYS to prevent cloudiness. It's also a lot easier to apply than full strength poly). After each coat, lightly sand with a 220 grit paper to eliminate any surface imperfections. After two coats, apply the sheen of your choice in the same manner, 50/50 wipe on, whether it be semi gloss, matte, ect....(using the sheen of your choice in the final coats will provide the proper sheen regardless of initial coats). After that third coat, sand with a 320 or 400 grit paper, and then use a 25/75 mix of the sheen of your choice and naptha. A very thin layer of this mix will fill in any and all imperfections leaving you with a perfect surface. It works every time. This is a great project for those on a budget.

Does this 50/50 mix work with polyacrylic also? Or just polyurethane? I am concerned about yellowing over time.
@ThePaulsupporter4 жыл бұрын
@@jennifervee4575 I normally use it with an oil based poly. Water based poly does not hold up as well. I don't think you will get yellowing since it is diluted at such a rate. yellowing normally happens in my experience when you either apply too much poly in a single coat or you do no allow it to cure before the next coat.

I worked for a decorator many years ago and we did a similar faux marble finish, using a base black and green and grey accents. This might be a helpful hint for you- we experienced the same issues with absorption when we tried doing it with sponges. What we ended up using was wadded-up cellophane wrap. No two wad up exactly the same so it created neat random patterns. It’s still messy work so gloves are a great idea. But this is a cheap alternative that gets more natural looking results.

You guys did a great job! You should be proud of yourselves. Your kitchen is gorgeous. Ignore the naysayers... especially the "35-year'd experts". They are just down about DIY projects because it means they are irrelevant & out of work if people do their own projects. I'm a "50-year expert" who can testify about all the money I've WASTED on labor of "35-year'd experts" for projects we could have done ourselves. Be a DIY-doer & save yourself a bunch of money. Besides, no "expert" is going to take as much pride in doing a beautiful job as the homeowner.

cool stuff, but just an added tip? (please, not meaning to put you down either) grab some cheapo feathers, add a 3rd or similar color (or something really different like gold) and roll the feather across diagonally a few times for a more defined grain. Cheap and Easy n it looks cool too... Keep up the good work young lady ~

I really appreciate real videos like this. Your kitchen turned out looking great. It is fun to do things like this. I haven't painted my counter but I did repaint my cabinets and if done correctly, it can last many years. It has been 15 years and I can see the need to repaint again, although this time I might invest in new pulls instead of painting mine like I did last time... which actually held up well, too. I do not suggest spray painting hinges, though, haha. They aren't terrible and the black powder they leave everywhere may not even be from painting them, but it has stained the paint in areas. I love videos like this with the learn as you go process included. Thanks so much for sharing, and your kitchen looks great!

@@qwekuleroygyimah7728 I am not sure what she used, but I bought trisodium phosphate and mixed it for paint prep, took all the doors, hinges, and pulls off, scrubbed everything and lightly sanded before priming 2 coats and painting with a bathroom or kitchen grade paint. It is a more easily washable paint than typical wall grade.

You did a great job on the upgrade to your kitchen and the video. I used this technique a couple years ago on my countertops.. It came out pretty well. One thing people may want to watch out for is that the oil based polyurethane has a yellowing effect over time. If i ever to this again, I would go somewhere like Sherwin Williams and request an oil based product that will not yellow. On some parts of the countertops, I used Minwax clear acrylic finish. The results looked as good as the urethane but did not yellow. I don't think the acrylic coat dries as hard as the oil based products though.
