That's exactly what I was thinking Peter. He is a fantastic father and carpenter.

Nice job, as usual. I built a few of those mantles for friends, only I mitered all the edges so it looked solid. Extra work, but worth it.
@davidreed90468 сағат бұрын
I would have mitered the corners going from the front to the sides of the mantle. If cut from the same board as the face, it gives the appearance of being one large piece of wood. Other than that minor critique, great job!

I was thinking the same thing!

Yeah, don't like the look of the end grain like that as it makes it look cheaply made.
@lechatbotte.2 сағат бұрын
It looks like a box sorry just not my taste
@decosse01Сағат бұрын
Yep, agreed, that's how I did mine - well I actually mitered sides AND top/bottom. So the Sides and Top & Bottom have 3 mitered edges, the front has 4. You could maybe get away without the front to top & bottom on this one, don't look quite so bad because of the typical angle of view, it's not so prominent. But the end grain on the sides looks poor I'm sorry to say.

Agree, the old one had more character, could have refinished it. This new pine wood box is too basic. If it was a different species like walnut, maybe.

I have to say it seems to me that you are all about quality! Kudos. also i bet i couldn't even imagine how much prep you put into all the behind the scenes work. Great stuff!
@yungbroc4 сағат бұрын
not to be that guy but as a chimney sweep we call those units prefabs. in your case its probably safe to run wires through the void in which the chimney runs, but it does get hot which is why the air space is there in the first place (acting primarily as insulation for all the heat). those flue pipes do get hot, and this doesn't necessarily apply to what you guys did but its usually not a good idea to run anything through that space, especially externally through the siding like one might do with a satellite dish etc. because it can and will introduce outside moisture that will eventually sit and pool on that metal firebox and/or flue pipe. ive seen it many times even when people apply silicone or other products to seal those voids. basically guys just be careful. stud pack did it right but your case might be different.

On your planer, you should not leave the chip chute open like that. The blower used to keep the head blades clear blow out with a fair amount of force/velocity and can blow chips into your eyes.
@qwerty1123115 сағат бұрын
13:40 that is not how you flatten a cupped board on a planer. The rollers before and after the cutter head force it flat and you just take off uniform thickness. You need something in the void to counteract the pressure from the roller.

Always love the content!! Quick question... what makes an outlet tamper resistant? Asking because I added 2 outside receptacles to my house this summer and neither one of them work. Only thing I can think is because they're tamper resistant gfi's and I added them in the middle of existing circuits. Any help is appreciated! Single mom of 5 doing a complete remodel by myself of an old brick farmhouse built in 1892, can't afford to hire anything out.
@andrejstefanovski6 сағат бұрын
Tamper Resistant is just little plastic doors that stop you from putting anything into the hole without engaging both at the same time. A plug going in engages both and they move out of the way, a kid putting in a butter knife only engages one and should be blocked from reaching the conductive surface. As for your GFCIs, most common mistake I see is someone swapping line and load. Find the markings on the back and incoming power needs to go to LINE and any downstream receptacles connect to LOAD. When reversed, some GFCIs will power devices but the GFCI function won't work, some just won't work, depending on manufacturer. Also all GFCIs pop the first time they're powered up, so make sure you press the reset button after flipping breakers back on.

Now do them a solid and get those wires behind the sheetrock on that TV and raise the electrical outlet so it's behind the TV. Little things like that go a long way and it's easy to do.... especially for you guys.
