One comment besides the end result was beautiful! When you were turning with the carbide tool, it seemed to me like your tool rest was a bit far from the piece. I reposition quite regularly so the tool rest doesn’t get too far away. Also, with regards to calipers, you can make some simple ones for referencing the ends like you were doing with a couple pieces of hardboard. Just shape them into two divider shaped arms and attach them together with a pivot bolt with wing nut. Then you can set to one size and compare to the other end. Keep it up! Good work!

Neat idea to make it out of resin and wood. I have probably made 15-20 "French" rolling pins for people and myself. I actually use one in baking. I found through using one that I start off with 2" diameter in the center and taper to "1 1/2" seems most comfortable when rolling out dough. The taper is not critical as I just eyeball it. Mineral oil finish is fine since it is food safe and renewable.

First, I had to go online to figure out what a French rolling pin looked like? Got it now!! Beautiful outcome. I kind of like the white because it breaks up a regular pattern. Being an engineer I would have measured/laid out a cardboard pattern to measure my progress against. Yours turned out great without though!! Good job.

Well I pulled the trigger on a full-size lathe it should be delivered in about a week or two I was able to take a trip to Miami since I live in Florida and I was able to see a lot of the full-size lathes in person and the one that definitely one out was the Laguna Revo exactly like the one you work on which is a lot sexier and had less of a lead time for delivery then the Powermatic that was in the same price range so we’ll see when it gets here i’m very excited I also got the 20 inch bed extension for it. Thanks again for all the wonderful videos and you inspire a lot of people.

Walnut looks great, yellow even looks good. I’m not big on the white myself. I think you could build a template and makeshift caliper pretty easy...it would help the balance. You can also mark it from each where the taper starts. Fun video. Thanks for sharing I’m a fan of watching your progress.

I make allot rolling pins. If they want old style handles I insert a dowel (1/2") in each end when I am doing my glue up. I reverse the grain on each board. I then center on the dowel pins.I make the handles and add them. I have a 120 watt laser engraver and I then add a name or whatever the customer wants. Nice work

Like the grain and the white spot is what it is. While on the lathe the yellow appeared to me as objectionable but when off and displayed the color was right on. Couple of suggestions: a. Bend a piece of wire as if measuring for wall thickness but use it on the OD. b. You may want to cut a template to achieve the taper / form you are trying to make. Other than the suggestions the rolling pin looks good. Nice job.

Bring blank to round and maximum diameter. Mark each end, mark middle. Use parting tool to cut ends to final diameter using bought or homemade calipers, or jig. For full taper, taper to each pre cut end diameter from the middle, doing far end first. For flat middle with tapered ends, mark each end of the middle flat length, then taper down to each precut end diameter, far end first. Speeds things up and helps you get the tapers even. Nice results for first run at it.

Peggy, I do like the white. I made mine out of 2 1/2" maple and use it for rolling my pizza dough. The finish that I chose was mineral oil and it has held up quite well. A comment on the mold. Might have been easier if you would have attached wooden blocks to both ends. Put wax paper top and bottom. Then over the wax paper secure plywood to hold in the epoxy. Not sure if that would work, but might be worth a shot. Wish I could attach a drawing to explain this better.

Love the yellow resin with the Walnut and the white looks great the only thing I would say as a novice baker the tapers look a little too thick to get a proper grip but as I say I am only a novice baker so maybe I am wrong. For my preference, I would have preferred not to have the white. A tip to check evenness of the diameter, take it out of the chuck and roll it on a table to see if there are any high or low spots. Despite the white, it was a nice first attempt! Thanks.

Did you look into food safety for the resin and tung oil? I’ve stayed away from resin because I could not determine if it was safe with food and if it would stick to dough. I use butcher block oil as a finish. Looks good.

When turning anything that is square to round the easiest way I have found to get it to round quickly without over-turning is to use a small tip red marker and a square to draw a linear mark down the exact center of one the flat sides then turn your piece until the mark starts getting lighter, at which point you can start with the finishing cuts.

You should have used calipers to balance the ends. And removed the white stuff. French rolling pins can be much slimmer than this one. Nice job on the resin, like the yellow. See you next week.

I thought that turned out nicely. I also liked the white resin. With that mould, weren't you tempted to just saw off the big, red taped slab bit and stick it on the lathe to get the mould off? Well done though.

I like the white spots. It is quite difficult to understand what you are saying in the moment when you are using the square-headed tool because of the noise in the background. Another nice video from you and I like the result very much.

All the French rolling pins I've seen (and used) are tapered at both ends. This one looks interesting and very nice. For the next one... if all you are doing is filling a space between two planks, I'd suggest simply gluing sacrificial pieces of 1/4" ply to the bottom and ends of the planks (and not the sides) and then turning it away. Your mold seemed over engineered, and you destroyed it anyway.

That's great, Peggy. I like the white as well as the figure in the wood around it. It breaks up the monotony of a regular pattern. Maybe next one put the wood at an angle and create a spiral effect. Now you need to go make some cookies, a pie, etc. Stay safe. Bill

PF, for a while there, I thought I was watching you turn into Big Foot or the creature from the dark lagoon with all those shavings on your arm. I have never heard of a French rolling pin. The only rolling pin I am familiar with is the one my wife uses on me when I misbehave. I still have knots on my head after 20 years of her putting up with me. But, she's definitely a keeper. Hope you are well and staying safe during these crazy times. Perhaps we will finally defeat the awful gift we received from China, but our lives forever changed. Perhaps a jack hammer or dynamite might work better releasing things from the mold. Maybe a light dusting of talcum power might act as a release agent to keep things from sticking to the mold. Who knows?
