Thank you, I always wanted to do something with my garage doors without breaking the bank, I watched your video on Easter Sunday and went to Home Depot before closing and purchase a $1.68 three inch paint brush and $16.98 can of Varathene Gel Stain in Hickory, that same afternoon I cleaned the garage with dish soap and on Monday morning and 4 1/2 hours later my garage doors came out looking a great and I love it... I figured if it didn't turn out I would just paint over..... I don"t know how to post pic's but if it's possible I would love to show off my works from TEXAS...............If you can walk me through the process

That turned out really great. The best part though is it was a DIY project so it probably cost u little to nothing compared to hiring an painter. Great job!

YES! It just cost a few dollars, compared to SO MUCH for replacing or hundreds for a painter.

To woodgrain a garage door like that it will cost about $1,100 to $1,300 dollars. So a diy is a good idea . I live in utah and have done a few doors myself check them out Instagram.com/fauxutah

That's fantastic. I've always loved the look of homes (usually high-end ones) that have the brown wood garage doors look. I never realized that I could just paint them to get the look without the expense. Thanks for sharing!

However, I did have some questions... 1) which brand and color of gel stain did you use? 2) how many coats of it did you put on it? 3) did you put a sealant coat over it?

Thanks so much!! We used this gel stain in mahogany from Varathane, bit.ly/2X7VyF5. Only applied one coat since I wanted a bit of the garage door color to bleed through to create the wood look. And because it was a gel stain, we didn't add any sealant or anything else on top... JUST the stain! It's been almost a year actually since we did this project and it's help up perfectly!

Tabitha Blue thanks for your reply. I just did my garage doors tonight before seeing your comment. I used the same brand but Kona and it’s soooo dark. I’m gonna go Home Depot tomorrow and get the color you used over the dark color and hopefully it’ll fix it and give it a more wood look.

Did you have to do any kind of a poly finish on top when done staining? I am getting ready to do this technique on my vinyl shutters and am curious if I should seal them. Your door looks beautiful!

Thanks so much! Yes, we used the interior, but made sure it was a gel stain. Nothing over top and after two years it's held up well!

Did you get your gel stain could completely smooth when stirring or were there still lumps? I can’t get mine super smooth and was wondering if it’s good or if it’s bad?

Hmm, I don't remember there being any lumps, it looked like smooth pudding when we applied it.

That's how we did it! I used the color that was already there as the base.

I believe it was a semi. I didn't paint the base coat color... it was already there when we purchased the house.
