I'm not sure why I watched this since I don't really need a garden gate.....but had to comment that many seemingly difficult tasks could have been made much easier if we'd only known the "pro tip" sooner. Thanks for the video. I have just made two 4x8 raised garden beds for a wicking bed and I want to keep animals out (deer, dogs, goats, squirrels , etc). I plan on putting up cattle panels or some 5’ fencing with t posts I already have. I plan on using the same fencing for the DIY gate as well. By the way, I had looked for a purchased gate but none seemed to fit my needs. Thanks again for your video. All the best from north Texas!

You’re welcome! I found a latch and hinge kit at the home improvement store, which included screws. I’ll have to check on the screw sizes for the gate.

I'm about to build a simple 7' gate for a chicken run, and this video was exactly what I needed thank you. On a 7' gate, would you recommend two diagonal supports--one half way up, and the second one the other half--or do you think I could get away with a single diagonal support from the top to the bottom?

Great, I’m happy to hear that! Is the gate 7 feet wide or tall? If it’s 7’ tall, you could use two diagonal supports to make an X. You could use the half-lap joint I mentioned to join the boards where they cross in the middle. That would keep the gate from getting tweaked out of shape.

How far apart do you put your fence posts?

I made the gate 3 feet wide, so the posts were spaced to allow that to fit between them with a small gap on each side.

We mostly rely on mulch to suppress weeds and hand-pull the ones that do come up. I’ve always heard that household vinegar can be sprayed on the leaves to get rid of most weeds. Vinegar breaks down pretty quickly but I’d still be careful using it around garden plants, especially where you’re growing food. This could be another video idea 😄

Where do i mark with my angel to get the 45 degree cut?

I wanted all the sides of the gate to be 3 feet (36 inches) so I made sure each board would have a long side of 36 inches and the 45 degree angles would create a short side of 29 inches.
