DIY GATE HINGES (AND HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT HINGES FOR THE JOB)

To finish up this project I need to hang comes gates so which hinges do you use? And how do you build DIY or homemade gate hinges? Here’s my thought process and see it in action on the job

First of all as a firefighter in your area I appreciate your due diligence bringing water with you. Very few welders do that, had a fire just 3 days ago from welders not having water on hand. Appreciate your Channel, stopped welding years ago and getting back into it and using your Channel as a refresher.

Just an added thought. You might want to take that 1993 placard off the trailer. Unless you're hauling a placardable amount of fuel... it seems miniscule but if you don't have hazmat on your DL and you're not using that tank for whatever placard used, DOT could ticket you for it. It's also likely since your not hauling a hazmat product you probably also wouldn't have the response paperwork sitting right there.

@@patrickhorvath2684 better off carrying and hand pump sprayer. Can get more coverage per gallon of water, put out some pretty good control burns with that and a backpack blower which we also use in the fire ground.

Having grew up on a ranch and feedlotl, if this were my pastures and gate, I would want the hinge strap moved to one side some. Then the gate could be opened parallel with the fence. It then could be left open as desired and attached to the fence to keep livestock from rubbing and it blowing in the wind. This is not a criticism--just a comment! I really like your channel and content. You do excellent work!

I agree, it needs a double pivot point and will open flat against both sides of the fence.

You might consider adding a "drop pin type hold open rod" to the end of your gates, my customers love them. Keeps the gate stationary in any position, a short bent handle keeps it up out of the way until needed.

40+ years ago a local welder used a small pump up sprayer with water and dish soap to 'wet' the dry grass ..... it's amazing the difference a small amount of soap will make when 'wetting' an area for fire prevention --- something about breaking the surface tension in water molecules as well as the soap making the water 'cling' to the grass better/longer.

I only use D & D Adjustable Hinges. They are a weld on hinge that comes in pedestrian size (500 lbs) to big gate sizes (1000lbs) and they are adjustable. Yes I can make my own, but they have a sealed bearing that never needs grease. They are fairly expensive but I have never had to go back and replace one in the 5 plus years I have been using them. They are awesome and I tell my clients they have no choice to use them or not. If I'm building their gate, I'm putting them on. Every welder I tell them about loves them... As far as "Farmer Mode" Remember you still have to go back if it breaks so do it right like Austin does.

Great videos! I learn something new every video. Cool fire rig but one thing I would do is peel off that 1993 placard since you just have water on board. Probably good practice to not indicate a flammable liquid (diesel) in tank when it’s just used for water.

Snow. My reason for being able to lift a gate off of the hinges. When a gate is snowed in it requires hand shoveling before the gate can be swung open. With the gate lifted up and away off the hinges it's possible to just drive through and/or much easier to plow away the snow.

Love the channel…as a fence builder can I recommend you using single chain links for the clip with the cut towards the top so new barb wire can be restrung with no problem, clips can open and be closed after new wire with a simple hammer…just a suggestion how we do it

Can you put the hinges on the same direction up, then you put a washer on top of Wildhorse at that way if you have the same amount of weight a hole in the gate up

Was thinking about using 1" spindles and hubs from old boat trailer for my hinges on new gate I need to build for my sister. See any issues? Going to use old trailer frame for gate and attach 1.5" x 16" Cedar boards I milled. Gate is 7 feet wide.

Hey Austin need some advice. Customer wants a huge gate 20’ wide by 8’ high and he’s going to be mounting it to an old telephone pole. Only thing I’m struggling with is how to hinge it. Any thoughts?

I say there's a time and place for music, just like you wouldn't want to talk over it when teaching us, I would personally say if rather hear your torch and welders. Along with anything to may be saying/thinking when your doing a task. But music wouldn't be bad if you were speeding up the video. But only if your not doing a voice over to explain or pass information. There is tons of information to gather from the sounds of your torch/welder especially if you're working in the wind. And there's always that spur of the moment "I should've done this" That said if you're listening to music i wouldn't ask that you stop but it is your channel.

I grew up farming and ranching and have built a lot of gates. I prefer building the gate so that it is wider than the actual opening and letting it overlap the hinge and latch posts. Obviously it will only open one way, but 99% of the time that’s okay. It will also allow the gate to open back against the fence flat. If you have ever had a baby calf get behind the gate instead of going thru you will know why they need to be flat against the fence if you are moving cattle. I realize that if the gate open both ways then there is no problem with the calf. I just prefer to be able to latch the gate snug up against the latch post plus you can put a foot on the latch post for the gate to sit on when closed to minimize sagging. This is not a criticism of your work Austin, just a comment about how I do it. We’ve both seen dozens of different hinges and latches on farm gates and they all work. I enjoy your videos and have picked up a few handy tips. Thanks.

If it Holds a Bull in, its "Bull Ready" or "Bull Worthy" (goes for any kind of fence work) if its not, its "Bull-Weak-el" (sounds like Bullwinkle) or "Bull Sh*t".....for the most part, Bulls respect fence lines. But get a working Bull going out there, he'll knock down (or out ) anything in his path. Thank you for the great videos.

Can't say I agree with mounting the "flags" or pins in the opposite directions. It puts all the weight vertical weight of the gate on the bottom pin - putting both flags pointing up shares the load between them. At that point it can be left as is, so the gate can be lifted and removed if needed, or a washer or tab can be welded on to block the gates removal.

I think he would level the gate using the gate jacks and then adjust to get the gaps right and weld it.

As long as the post is plum the fixed hinges work just great. But like the other individual stated I also use my gate jacks to actually level the gate. If my post is not plum then I will either trim one of the hinges or add to one just like I did here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ6cm3Wgp8x9b5o @ 16:37

So why do you use oxygen/acetylene torch over oxygen/propane in both everyday use and pipelining? Wouldn't propane be cheaper cost input? Great videos and nice job.

my guess is because almost all of us learned on oxy/acet torches so we just stuck with it, I never used a oxy propane setup do you have to set the Propane to a different pressure than you would acetylene? I assume it burns alot cleaner than acetylene considering that shit covers everything in soot

@@natenate2280 40psi oxygen and 5-10 on propane is what I learned. Other than tips and how you lite torch it really cuts about same. Only downfall is not being able to weld/braze with it.
