Great project! I love how you just dived in and started hacking it together rather than spending hours trying to design on a computer. Thanks for sharing your design, I'm looking for something to use to video my 1/10th scale 3D printed RC tank as it traverses my yard and I think this will do the trick.

Dude! This is fantastic! I always wonder how to do this when seeing cable cams at sports events.

Really cool project. Only issue was the bending the plastic the wrong direction for the gimbal mount. The angled lean is because the center of gravity is not below the pulleys.

I saw a video for that the other day but without a gimbal on it the footage will suffer from swaying motion. It seem easy to get side to side motion with these cable cams as there is so much weight down low the cable cam turns into a pendulum.

Because you were talking about the possible NEED to reduce the gear, increase your ratio by getting a larger pinion or several to determine which speed is best for you. Great idea for a cable cam. Have you ever considered 3D printing or hooking up with someone that prints? you'd be next level DIYer.
@kylemartin101

I have 3D printed in the past the problem is that not everyone has a 3D printer so basing projects around them minimise the amount of people who can follow along. That said the videos I did do on 3D printing did well so maybe it is time to give them another look. It did not help that my 3D printer was total crap. You can check out a few of the video here: kzbin.info/aero/PLhceDTg-JOm9mp6xAWoNpgO0lZqsFn2KF

Great video! Do you have a video that shows the footage? Also, do you have issues with the balance effecting the tilt?

Great Video, Great Build Idea, suggestions on how to you waterproof the unit for those of us who live in countries that are "moist" most days of the year (Scotland)
@kylemartin101
@kylemartin101 6 жыл бұрын
From the west coast of canada I feel your pain. I would maybe start with a waterproof RC car. The one I used is quite good, I drove it through a LOT of puddles while testing with no problems. If you put some vaseline on the battery connections and used a rain proof gimbal you should be good to go. The RC receiver and motor driver are fully encased in hot snot so water should not be able to get to the electronics to easily.

So rad! I am a professional mtb videographer, and really want to build this. What is the plastic plate you used for the rig? I want to keep it as light as possible and this looks like the best way

Where are you located? I got mine at a local boat store. The block is called Bullet Classic 29 mm Cheek Bullet Block you can find it on the manufacturer website here: www.harken.com/productdetail.aspx?id=5035&taxid=424 they have them at West Marine: www.westmarine.com/buy/harken--bullet-wire-cheek-block--196279?recordNum=2 but I think I would get this one instead: www.westmarine.com/buy/harken--29mm-carbo-air-cheek-block--2042331?recordNum=3 It is a bit cheaper and looks like it would be easier to mount. The blocks I used are 29mm but if you wanted to be able to use it with larger rope you could move up to the 40mm. I used thin cutting board for my build, most dollar stores have it for cheap and you can bend it with a heat gun or even a hair dryer.

i plan on using a attiny85 , set of 1$ receiver+transmitter board and mosfet to drive a servo that has a spring loaded grooved wheel on it. that way it is auto-adjustable and can be controlled wirelessly for speed and duration. total cost about 10$ for everything. now i just need to receive my modules and component from china...

This is a really good point. The only trick with them is to find the charger. I have got one or two RC cars at the local VV and neither have had the charger with them. If they run off Lipos like this car it is no problem but but chargers for older custom batteries can be hard to find.

Very clever! I chose to do a gravity propelled cable cam and made it with 2 small pulleys and a thin brass rod connected to a T-bar to hold 2 GoPro cameras. I want to go 100-500 yards, so needed to use very light-weight fishline. You can see my approach here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWmomWifaNRjl5Y

If you have a drone it would be easier, but in tight trees or in places where you can not fly a drone this is a cool alternative.

Getting medium to high speed tracking shots with a drone in a dense forest or heavily populated area is next to impossible. Especially so if you're a one man operation trying to shoot video of yourself. I know because I have 2 drones that I use for this very purpose. A cable cam like this is priceless.
