Alternators have rectifiers, generators regulators. An alternator produces AC current the rectifier converts it to DC. A generator produces DC. If you have a solid state (electronic) regulator disconnect the armature (A) lead before striking the generator post with the hot wire from the battery. You don't wanna fry the box. I don't know that it would, but better safe than sorry, eh? If you strike the field post (F) with the hot battery wire you just turned your generator into an electric motor. BTDT. It will try to turn the engine over when you reconnect the wire. A hot lead should always feed the regulator, even with the key off. This is how polarity is maintained. There are two easy ways to tell if the bike's charging. On older mechanically regulated systems the headlight will usually dim just a tad at idle. Rev the bike up, headlight gets brighter, its charging. With a solid state regulator and a HID or LED headlamp it probably won't. With the bike off put test leads on the battery posts (DC setting). With a good, charged battery it should read 12 volts. Start the bike, rev the engine and the voltage should come up to at least 14V DC. Your welcome.

I use to have to do this on the old US Army tanks when replacing the main generator. Polarize the system...same as you just did. Most of the time had to be done....

Any of you have expirience with a solid state regulator with a lithium battery ? I have a new generator , new regulator ,new lithium battery. Butthe led lights inside the regulator wont light up as working or defective. I did not try a lead battery because....i dont have one. Regulator and rectifier are not the same thing. The rectifier is in the generator and is called a commutator. The box bolted to the frame is the regulator and more (a voltage cut-out circuit and over-current protection).
