I bought a piece of junk MTB for £70 on ebay & over the next year broke & replaced/upgraded every part. Every time I had to go to youtube & find out about things like BBs & star nuts & it was like unlocking an esoteric puzzle. I was buying all these weird & wonderful tools specific for the job (or not! A small screwdriver works great for installing a star nut in your steerer!) Long story short I replaced every part on that bike - only the frame is original now! & then began a 2nd project. The second one, I even broke the frame eventually. Only the stem is original on that one. Wish I'd had this video in those early days, would certainly have simplified things!!!!! Building a bicycle is immensely satisfying. Watching one being built is actually not bad either!
@Bishop01513 жыл бұрын
When installing a star nut without the tool you can use an oversized socket, one that's just bigger than the steerer tube. Turn the socket open end up and drop the bolt down the hole the wrench would normally attach to, you may need a washer to stop it dropping through. Then slide some washers onto the bolt as depth spacers. These should be a little smaller than the steerer tube internal diameter, so that they will go in easily but keep things straight, and enough to keep the star nut at the correct depth. Then screw the star nut onto the bolt all the way up to the washers. You hit the socket, so you won't damage the bolt. The washers keep everything straight and at the correct depth. You know you've gone far enough when the socket hits the top of the steerer, and is level. Unscrew the bolt, drop out the washers.

Thanks for the nice video, feel good on the reconnect hydraulic brake cable. Your simple words and explaining is a plus plus for a good job done.
@yorkchris106 жыл бұрын
Really nice choice of materials. It looks quite light. Personally, the only thing I'd do differently is a single housing for the cable. I did it on my all-season bike with teflon cable and it doesn't make much difference in terms of friction, but big difference in terms of siezure. I did it on my fair-weather bike too as it really reduces the "hassle-factor". Also, I found that shifting was improved when I changed to MicroShift actuators. They have a trigger-like action with short throw so they're more like a step-change than ramp when shifting. The Tourney FD seemed to improve responsiveness.
@alantaylor66916 жыл бұрын
Damn I installed some microshifters on my father's bike too and you're so right, they shift like surgery! What do you mean that using single-length of housing prevents seizure? I can't recall having my inner cables seizing due to the use of piecemeal housing. Perhaps you're not poking the holes back out after you cut the housing, and the squashed housing ends are impeding the inners, causing "seizures"? Just guessing, I'm not sure what you mean.

@anhb42036 жыл бұрын
toncho tonev I just did. What i meant is that, the clamping would be more effective if the "bolt side" part of the clamp is on top of the seat tube slit. It's more logical but maybe not aesthetically sound. When tightening, the part of the clamp that comes together should be on top of the seat tube that also "closes".
@MAGAIVER6 жыл бұрын
an hbrds that will distribute the clamping force unevenly and it can crack the carbon seatpost. Even with a torque wrench and low Nm. My seatpost cracked with only 4nm. For an aluminum seatpost it's fine to have the bolt over the slit.

It looks like the mounts of the rear disc brakes are not part of the frame itself but a separate piece, an adapter for frames that don't have mounts for rear disc breaks. Just wondering if there is such a thing as a "conversion kit" for older frames that normally wouldn't take disc brakes.
@KD-sz1sn4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure whether there are adapters that would work with older frames for disc brakes, but that seems like an unlikely pair. In the video, he used an adapter for disc brakes so they would fit the system he wants to use, the bike was already equipped with disc mounrs
