This video provides a quick walkthrough of how to install a garage door weather seal. The long PVC weather seal strips were purchased at Lowes for under $10 each. Installing weatherstripping will help keep your garage warmer in the winter by cutting down on drafts. It will also help keep your garage cooler in the summer. and also cut down on unwanted insects. Insulation and weatherstripping will pay for themselves over time and will also help make your home more comfortable.

To all those curious, no, you do not need to use screws. Typically, nails are used to hold the seals. Screws are a bit overkill. Secondly, you do not need to put silicone over the nails. Use galvanized nails and paint the trim to match your house. Always put the top seal first. Then the sides.

This must be my problem, my sides are all screwed up and i tried replacing them couple years ago and it just happened soon after again. I never did the top maybe that's what i have to do

The big gaps between the door and frame can usually be adjusted by loosening the track brackets and sliding the track closer to the door.

I just replaced mine and trust me - it was much more than just swapping out new weather seal. The ones I was replacing were totally installed improperly by the previous owner - so that created much more of a complication as they got creative on how they installed them. Also, it took me several tries to get them to fit properly as I have garage door openers and if it fits even a little too tightly, the opener goes into safety mode and won't close all the way. While the replacement seems very simple, just keep in mind not all situations are the same - no one should ever just assume so.

Thanks for posting that video, from the comments it's helped others out. I'm a seasoned (60+ years) DIYer and would offer some additional thoughts. 1) It was painful to watch you cut the PVC weatherstrip with a utility knife. There are safer, faster, cleaner ways. I'd use table saw with 40 or more tooth blade. If no table saw, would be easier and safer than the knife to use a fine tooth handsaw (which you did mention) or a coarse hacksaw 14 teeth per inch (TPI). One slip with that utility knife could send someone to the emergency room. 2) Next tip would be rather than the screws you used, or nails as another suggested, would be to use Trim Head Torx painted exterior screws which sink themselves into the PVC so they are flush. They have much smaller and less obtrusive heads and almost disappear. They work great to apply PVC fascia & trim. I used #8x2" GRK brand from Home Depot, they even come with a T-10 Torx bit. Easy to install and remove down the road if necessary. 3) I'd prefer a cordless drill with a clutch to install screws 100-to-1 over a corded drill (with no clutch as you noted). Worth every penny to have in your toolbox.

Great ! Exactly what I was looking for. I'm on the same house for the past 18 years, and frankly, I never cared... until I put some power tools in the garage and saw the same type of seal on a friend new house. I'm sold. My first attempt at insulation was the door itself: I glued those green pieces of styrofoam (3/4", 4x8) bought at Lowes, cut them to each panel size and put inside. The temperature difference was very noticeable, during Summer and even now in Winter but now I want that extra step.

I'm doing the same thing. Installed the green hinge system last night. Turns out whoever installed my garage door put the wrong hinges on, which caused huge (1/4-1/2") gaps. The door is flush almost all the way around now, just going to adjust the tracks near the bottom where there's still a small gap, then install the seals. Hoping to be able to work in my 3rd-car garage shop without freezing!

My living room sits directly over the garage, this definitely applies to a lot of homes not to mention if you have plumbing or heating pipes that you may want to help protect. Just had a friends drain waste pipe freeze, one of his bathrooms is over a two car garage. I’m sure there were other factors but stopping cold/heat where you don’t want it is always a plus! Nice video, can’t help to think if some of the screws were backed out just a pinch, it would help the dimpling. Did the caulking help clean that up?
