This video covers the process of replacing a CV Half Shaft on a 2003 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. The procedure covered in this video will be the same, or similar, on many other ATVs, UTVs, quads, and side by sides, including Polaris, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki Can-Am and more. At the beginning of the video, I demonstrate what a bad CV join can sound like, especially when going around a comer or with a passenger. I also cover how to replace the rear gear case seal on a 2003 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O.

Mark Jenkins, here's a tip for removing those seals...drywall or deck screw. Tap it in with a hammer, screw it in a few threads, than use vise grips or hammer to pull out seal with screw. Works every time. 👍

Thanks for the really educational video i have a polaris sportsman but im kinda new to fixing stuff on it and mine was clicking too but i thought because my boot is tore that it was that hitting the wheel so i bought a new one originally thinking it was that so i watched this video so i could see how to take the cv joint off so i could change the boot but after hearing your 4 wheeler I looked back at the title and realized i need to buy a new cv joint instead of the boot so thanks for that!

Hi Mark thanks for tie video. I liked how you showed the symptom that we should be looking for before just jumping to changing the CV. I have that exact sound that just started today. My question is is a unit still rideable if you don't change the CV or will it cause more damage to other parts of the unit? Also I have a 2008 Polaris 800 HO would this be similar on how to change it out? One last question if you change one side should you automatically change the other?

i replaced the inner rear cv on my 2003 500 h.o. following along to your other video!!! went well but 2 weeks later the rear outer right broke. is it the same boot/part number? last time i used the exact same one that you did, just reused the original clamp because i didn't want to buy the tool for the aftermarket clamps... worked great though. thank you for your videos, i feel you will save me a ton of money vs. the stealer

Mark Jenkins Did you get lucky? My axle just came apart. now I have nothing to grab. what do you think about drilling a hole into the outer of the inner joint so i can spray wd-40 in there? will it loosen up the compression ring? Is there enough space between the two axles? i don't want to damage the other side (right side). I've tried prying with no luck. I'm a little worried about cracking the transmission. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. great video. AMAZING TO ME HOW YOU RECORD VIDEO WHILE TRYING TO GET A JOB DONE

First time watching your channel. Your removal got very lucky that it didn't snap in two sections. It must have not been that bad. Now if you have made a video on how to remove a very stubborn inner cap off the differential without breaking it, that would be awesome. I didn't catch the year of your sportsman though? Your instructions were straight forward.

If one side won't come out you can go on the other side and use a 1/2" rod and a hammer to drive the axle out! Mine wouldn't come out either side, so I took one side apart used a hardened foot long drill bit and drilled a hole thur the inner CV housing till it came out the gap that's between the two axles. Then drove a rod threw the hole and knocked the opposite side axle out then went around and drove the drilled axle out!! Moral of the story, use anti-seize grease on the axle splines because Polaris axles like to rust in place!!!

My question is with the spline and shaft (14:00) minute mark of your video. On my Polaris those splines are rusty and warn. Water gets in there when you drive in deep water/mud. But how do you prevent this or keep that greased without completely disassembly. The shaft spline to diff spline becomes dry rusty water filled and wears out. Why isn’t there a grease nipple ? Why doesn’t the seal prevent water/mud enter the spline area? Any advice thanks
