I bought a travel trailer yesterday and drove it home 300 miles after the guy I bought it off of didn't know how to adjust it like this, one chain was tighter than the other, he had the sway bar part in the trailer but never installed it before I left. I found it after I got home. The trailer swayed a little, but not too much even though it was very windy all the way home. Found out I need a transmission cooler though. Thanks for the video.

Hi Jason, You mention the front of your vehicle should be 1” higher when properly installed. I learned that when properly installed the front of your vehicle should drop half the amount that the rear of the vehicle drops. In other words the entire vehicle will sit lower but the front only dropping 50% compared with the rear drop. That shows the weight is properly distributed when everything is adjusted correctly.
@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop 2 жыл бұрын
Oh I like that explication! Makes sense. I’m going to check mine that way next time I hook up. Would make a great short video. Thanks!
@cra2cra226

Yeah, I'm confused. At 20:46 Jason says his uncoupled front height was 38.5. Then he says he wants to be that, or higher by 1". I thought you expect both front and rear to drop (because you've added weight), but you want the drop in the front to be equal to the drop in the back. Otherwise, what you're doing is squatting the back axle down and raising the weight off the front axle. So then Jason measures and shows that the front raised by .25". Probably insignificant raise EXCEPT that you've hooked up a trailer and the front and back should've dropped - not raised. Then Jason says, "the sway bar is lifting the back of the truck up just enough." WHAT? You're not using a sway bar (yet) - you're hooking up a weight distro system, not a sway control bar. I'm a newb, but this video needs a few edits. It confused me more than I was before. lol.
@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no. I wish I could go back and edit a published video. Sorry for the confusion. But yes the front and back will drop but front less then back.

How far do you tighten the sway control? The instructions said to bottom out the threads but that's pretty tight.
@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop 3 ай бұрын
I have always struggled with that too. It’s not clear. I just make it pretty snug as there is a lot of leverage against it and you want to slow down any swaying movement that might start. That said if I’m going on roads below 65 and curvy I Don’t even use it. Also if your in the right balance with proper tong weight your risk of sway goes way down. Happy towing!

Great Video!! I got thinking about the draw pin that goes through the hitch....it seems "weird" that a 5/8" pin is all that is used to hold the hitch...which holds 6000 pounds of trailer?? It would be better to have at least TWO pins holding the hitch in the receiver...taht way there is TWICE the material to haul "":the load"...!!
@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ya that always baffles me but if the broke often the industry standers would change to something more robust. Industry dose recommend changing your pin ever year.

@azcharlie2009

The trailer and truck should be close to level when all hooked up. If either is sagging or is too high, adjustments need to be made. The most important point is not to have too much sag in the rear with the truck. If you do, you're taking weight off the front wheels which is dangerous. If the trailer is not level, you can get more tire wear will be uneven. A side note, I don't recall you using the spacers. Maybe I missed it. You need those to get the proper angle before tightening the single bolt at the bottom. Hopefully, you did use them?
@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. Yes I used all the spacers to get the angle right which places the right amount of lift on the bars. Got her dialed in pretty well now.

@Jasonsdesignshop

No mine is riding smooth. Sounds like your hitch end is still to heavy making the front so light it can spring up over bumps. Maybe try moving up a link on the chain which will send more weight to the front tires.

@Jasonsdesignshop

I was concerned about that too, as my driveway has a 5% slop, but as long as the truck and trailer are on the same slop it should not make a difference. Go for it!

Hello Jason, I just bought the same hitch and the thing that is confusing me is that in STEP 4 it says the ball height should be 1" higher than the coupler height, however, this makes the bars 4 inches higher than they should be. If I lower the ball by 4 inches my ball height in STEP 4 will not be at the "Target" ball height. I'm assuming it's more important to have the bars at the designated height than the ball height?
@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I believe you are right. Get the Bars to the correct height and thus correct tension and the Ball height will by default be fine. If I am understanding you correctly.

@Jasonsdesignshop
@Jasonsdesignshop 2 жыл бұрын
3 in off center. Not sure how much tolerance there is. But you can check by hooking your trailer up to your truck making the tightest turn you think you’d ever make to the side of the sway bar and then go out and see if it would collapse so far it hits the end and would probably break off or not. If this looks like it would work I would still want an inch more that it could slide in just for safety.

You probably only burned about 30 % more fuel pulling that parachute, yes whoever wrote those instructions probably never pulled a trailer. The towed trailer needs to be 1 inch lower the front than the rear. That way you have wind forces pushing down on your trailer instead of wind getting under the trailer and lifting it. Basic physics.
