The purpose of the filter (for me) is solely to prevent a softener resin breakout from entering the house water supply piping. A filter before the softener would do nothing to prevent that.

@@Phil-D83 1) I'm on city water, so not such a big issue for me, 2) The resin breakout will be caused by a failure of either the upper or lower filter basket in the resin tank. Yes, a clogged valve system can cause the softener to not operate properly, but it would not cause a resin breakout.

@thehoneybadger9262 i am on city water as well. Got a spin filter, 5 micron and 1 micron before my catalytic carbon filter and water softener. May add something after the softener to prevent what you experienced

@thehoneybadger9262 what I have is overkill, but it works. Had issues with sediment here in the city lines. Also the smell and test of the chemicals added was annoying me. Fixed everything
