I tried all the formulae in the internet, and only yours worked for my jewelry with caked-in black "something." Thank you so much. I've looked all these years and nothing worked: not the toothpaste, not the vinegar, not with Mr. Clean and not all the other combinations. Baking soda alone did not work. Maybe it will but not with the grime my jewelry had for years of non-use and storage. I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!

Absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much. I'm always on the lookout for these home recipes for cleaners as I wonder about chemicals in the shop bought products, specially silver cleaner, and then there's the cost factor. Have to confess I've lost my wedding & engagement rings but still have my eternity ring in my jewellery box. This will be perfect for all my silverware! xxx Jo

Great Colleen…I have one of those "plates" that you put in a glass dish, pour hot water and the Arm & Hammer Washing Soda in and it's a chemical reaction…you don't have to do anything - the reaction happens immediately and you don't have to do anything that may be abrasive to your jewelry…works on gold and silver as well and your silverware!!!! - anything that tarnishes or gets dirty. Takes about 5 seconds!!! :)) patti
@MsCavalier0111 жыл бұрын
Hi Patti, I've seen those plates on t.v. commercials. I couldn't believe how good the baking soda worked. It loosened up all the gunk that had been building up and it was on the tinfoil when I dumped out the solution. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Hugs, xox :)
@rxstrmom11 жыл бұрын
I've had my plate for probably 10 years and I don't have to do anything..I purchased it locally….back in the day of flying we had little tubes of ammonia in the galley in case someone "fainted" and we would break one of those open and dip our rings in it and boy did they sparkle!! There are so many ways to clean jewelry…thanks for one more!

you read my mind Colleen! I have been searching high and low for a tried and true safe DIY cleaner, i was told by a jeweller that deposits in a cleaner can bind to the diamond and to be careful not to clean any other item in the same cleaning solution with the diamond ring, been using a mircro fibre cloth and a mild dish soap which actually cleans surprising well but figure i can do better :)
@MsCavalier0111 жыл бұрын
Hi Catherine, I can't believe how well this works, especially with the electric toothbrush. My ring hasn't shined like this in a long time. Let me know if you try it. Hugs, xo :)

Good show! I use the same method! Only a soft toothbrush is highly recommended. Never thought of using my electric toothbrush (I'll check to see if they sell soft heads). Oh, and please don't dry your ring with paper towels. They leave fibres. I use a soft linen or cotton cloth. Of, love you ring. Thanks for sharing.

I guess I'll have to use this as a scrub while the rings remain on my hands. My fingers swell so much. I don't think it will be too drying will it?
@MsCavalier0111 жыл бұрын
Be really careful Ellen, because that water will be hot after having it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Just dip the toothbrush into the solution and scrub it good but make sure you get all the solution off because it could cause a detergent burn. @ruthbaldwin92638 жыл бұрын
This works very well on silver, and not only on jewellery. I have used this method on various items such as a small silver trophy which I had to unscrew from its base because I didn't know how that part would react to the solution. There is indeed a chemical reaction from the salt and baking soda with the aluminium foil. For less flat, rounded items, I had to turn the piece over from time to time so that all sides had had contact with the foil. Some large pieces need more than one immersion and the solution (and foil) may be have to be replaced with fresh. I've not tried this with costume jewellery; does anyone know if this would harm a 1960s pendant and chain of great sentimental value that is definitely not of any precious metal?
@MsCavalier018 жыл бұрын
Hi Ruth! I haven't tried this on costume jewelry, so if it's a sentimental piece you may just want to use a jewelry cleaning cloth!
@ruthbaldwin92638 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I don't have one of those as yet but I think that would be best; I don't want to spoil the finish. I brushed the pendan t carefully with a soft toothbrush and then a soft tissue and the pendant looks brighter, but the chain is still dull so I'll spend some time on that too. Next stop ebay for a jewellery cleaning cloth!

The best information I can give is that anything that is abrasive such as toothpaste ECT is not good it's not terrible like bleach though. Bleach will absolutely ruin gold jewelry. It will eat away at the alloys in the metal. You will be left with a piece of work that is crummy, and any respectable jeweler will tell you when your dealing with that. We advise all of our customers to keep away from bleach/Chlorine...swimming pools and household cleaning are the most common causes of effected gold.
@MsCavalier018 жыл бұрын
I never knew that about the bleach. Wow! How can you get white gold pieces to look bright again? Thanks for all the good information.
