I have a similar leak-down tester. I learned after many frustrating tests that it was only accurate if I went from Negative to 0 when setting the tester. But if I pass 0, then returned from Positive to 0, it was unreliable. ...for what it's worth.

As the oil down the bore, in the compression test video, didn’t show a significant change to the compression, I thought it pointed to a crook valve seat or something of that nature. Thanks to this video, I see that the leak down tester is a handy tool to stop amateurs like me from jumping to expensive conclusions. Thanks for posting. You’ve got a great channel.

@@LockyourHubs4WDing what do you do in instances like that? Do you toss out the engine? Or replace the broken components?
@LockyourHubs4WDing Жыл бұрын
It would depend on the cost of the engine. The diesel 1hdt in the 80 series is a reasonably expensive engine. So the engine was rebuilt.
@berniemac8413 Жыл бұрын
@@LockyourHubs4WDing gotcha. I purchased a 2005 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 with the 2.7L 5 cylinder Diesel 647. It’s rebadged as a Dodge to circumvent the importing taxes into the US. It has tremendous amounts of blowby. The oil cap dances all over the place when I unscrew it and it smokes like a chimney. These engines are known to hit a million miles if maintained properly. And due to the age, they stopped making new ones. They sell re-manufactured ones for $8-12k. And that’s quite a bit considering I paid a fraction of that price for the entire van. Is rebuilding the engine something you can do at your home? Or is it a task that should be left to the professionals?

Other than the machine work, with a decent set of tools, a home mechanic can definitely rebuild an engine. I know, been there, done that!

Thanks for the video. I use this procedure as well on my 1HDT. I use the same gauge. Unfortunately I think I blew up the right gauge. Normally you should be able to 100psi on the left gauge and and the right gauge should go to 0. But I see on your gauge it is the same as on my gauge. 50psi left and right on 0. I personally think that this 50psi are not sufficient for diesel engines which have 500psi pressure. In my case I did a CO2 test which indicated a combustion leak into the radiator. The fluid turned yellow. I also have always a rising pressure in the coolant system. A compression test showed me a max difference of 1bar. All were from 31 to 32 bar. So I did a leak down test on all 6 cylinders but none of the cylinders leaked air in the coolant system . I replaced the right gauge with a common 140psi gauge and put 100psi in the combustion chamber. I didn't have significant leaks through rings, valves and I had not a single bubble coming up in the rad system. I do have to say that the engine was cold. I do see tiny little bubbles ( very tiny) in the rad cap while the engine runs for 5min and warms up. So i suspect it must be a tiny little crack somewhere in the head which only expands under heat. I will need to take off the head now and do a crack test with my DIY jig for that head. Hope that comes out negative and I just replace the head gasket and I am good again. I can still drive my 1hdt for 100km and the temp stays normal. I just have to release the pressure from the radiator every 100km...otherwise I might blow that. What are your thoughts?

just wondering what it ended up being, gasket, rings or piston. would it be possable for example to add oil into cylinder and then test again, (like you on compression trst). im thinking if it was the gasket it wouldnt make much difference, but rings or piston it would initially improve the reading. cheers

The compression test pretty much concludes the same thing do you think. If you started the vehcle with all the glows in etc and took the oil cap off there would have been enough blowby to tell you it's loosing air into there as well. My HZ is doing it with bad blowby and white smoke after AdBlue was ran through the tank. Wrecked injector pump and looks like engine too.

Great video. You mentioned that you connect to 100 psi and zero out your right gage. Your left gage it shows only around 30 psi. How is that possible? Your tester is calibrated for 30 psi? Thank you for your input.

I bought LDT in the states but the compression tester in Asia. The couplings didn't fit. So I took one of the adapters in the LDT kit, drilled out the back to M10x1.25mm. Took a M10x1.25mm bolt, drilled all the way a hole through of 3mm. Shaped the front exactly like the compression tester plug and screwed the other side into the coupling I prepared. Braze welded it a tiny bit around and screwed it into the glow plug hole. Toyota is all metrical. Easy to do some DIY... cost me nothing...
